It really didn’t take much from me, honestly. My ex is all talk and no show, as is his entire toxic family.I was the one in the relationship who did everything. I did our taxes, filled out all the forms for school, filled out housing applications. Everything. He hated doing it and always left it all to me. So when it came to divorce, it was pretty much a cakewalk.I did everything myself with just a bit of help from a lawyer friend. I even wrote up our custody agreement, which I knew he’d never even read. For child support, I asked for very little. I didn’t want to have to deal with Friend of the Court, so I wrote in that I wanted $50 a week per child. We have three, so I got $600 a month. This money had to be direct deposited into my account straight from his check because I didn’t want to chase him down for it all the time. This will be important later.My goal was to leave him with more than enough money for him to pay for his own expenses, pay for extras when he had the kids with him, and even some left over for his own personal luxury. Of course, he is also terrible with money, so I basically gave him enough rope to hang himself with. I say this because, as a family, we were homeless for half of our 17 year marriage because of his spending habits, but he always blamed me for it.In the custody agreement, I gave him plenty of visitation. Every school break, almost every holiday, and every other weekend. But there was a stipulation in the agreement that he would be barred from amending the custody order until he maintained his own residence for a period of at least 18 months, and not just living with his parents. His parents abused me and our children the entire time we were married. His mother literally poisoned me. Proof of all of this was on file with friend of the court in case he ever decided to try to fight me.He didn’t bother reading any of the paperwork. He knew I wouldn’t try to screw him over because I was very sincere about wanting to set him up to be a decent parent to our children. I made it all as easy as possible for him, really. He didn’t even show up to court for our divorce, and he never showed for our custody hearing. For the first year, everything was smooth.Then he got a different job making almost twice as much as he was currently making. I didn’t ask for more money, I simply reminded him of needing to set up direct deposit. He wouldn’t do it. Weeks would go by, and I’d get nothing. He’d make excuse after excuse, such as HR lost the paperwork, or that he filled it all out and nothing happened. He’d get it fixed soon, don’t worry.I was patient. I offered to help. After almost six months, I told him he had two weeks to deal with it, or I was filing for child support through friend of the court. I called him while I was on my way to the courthouse. Nothing. He ignored every text and call that I made, and he ignored all the letters from friend of the court asking for documentation. Friend of the court made a decision based on what the average employee made at the company he worked for, since he didn’t send them anything to go by. They awarded me $1200 a month, which is twice what I asked for.He ignored every text and call, and had given me radio silence for several weeks, and didn’t even take the kids for his visitation because he would prefer to avoid talk about child support. He hadn’t opened a single piece of mail, so he didn’t see the first hit from his paycheck coming. The first time money was deducted is when he called me demanding to discuss child support.For the first time since I filed for divorce, he actually stepped foot into the courthouse to petition for custody. It was, of course, denied because of the stipulation of him not living with his parents. Our youngest turns 18 in a few months, but he will likely be paying back child support for another five years.
