PDF Editor FAQ

When does Windex freeze?

Q: When does Windex freeze?A: Whenever it gets cold enough!(rim shot)Sorry. *ahem*To address the implied question, “at what temperature does Windex freeze” I did a quick search.I found wildly varying answers from “Windex doesn’t freeze” (absurd, since EVERYthing freezes at low enough temperatures) to 17 degrees (I assume this was Fahrenheit). The true answer is probably the one in the MSDS (material safety data sheet) provided by SC Johnson, the manufacturer of Windex. They say Windex freezes at 0 degrees Celcius (32 F), which was higher (warmer) than I expected. Why did I expect the answer to be lower (colder)?Windex contains ammonia, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and propylene glycol, which all freeze at far lower temperatures than water. However Windex is mostly water—and apparently there’s enough water (or not enough other stuff) that it behaves just like water in the cold.BTW, this is also why Windex is *not* the same as windshield washer fluid, which contains ingredients intended to prevent it freezing. Windex can clean your windshield in the summer, but using it in winter will damage your car.
