I took my son to Tire Rack Street Survivor school shortly after his receipt of learners permit. The school in question was put on by the Chattanooga Region SCCA.In the school, they expose new drivers to about 12 common car control issues that may result in freakouts and car accidents by new drivers. They drive through these simulations in a closed parking lot course repeatedly with coaches riding shotgun until the students do the right thing pretty much automatically.Part of the course included a lecture section, and one of the presenters was a volunteer Chattanooga police officer. Many of the students in the class were girls. In fact, including myself, the lion’s share of the students had amateur racers (autocross) for parents.The police officer offered the following scenario and advice. Apparently, sexual preditors are known to purchase police cars in surplus auctions, and use the “stolen authority” of a car and fake uniform to prey on women by pulling them over.The volunteer officer offered the following advice to young women when they are faced with a traffic stop. Slow down, run your emergency flashers to signal that you are in fact submitting, and drive slowly at or below the speed limit until you reach a well lit location where there are witnesses. Then you should be much safer to interact with the officer.The officer went on to detail other behavior during the stop to have a safe and polite traffic stop such as staying in the car, having license, registration, insurance card ready when the officer steps up, and keeping hands in plain sight.
