Computer Scientists want to learn and expand understanding of computation through the scientific method.Although, Computer Science courses aim towards understanding the theory; most degree holders of Computer Science tend to find a job as a Software Engineer or work under the practical applications of Computer Science. Those Computer Science majors who are more industry-oriented tend to become Software Engineers. Unlike Software Engineering, Computer Science majors don’t always necessarily focus on coding classes. Instead, coding is just a portion of most Computer Science curriculum.Pursuing a degree in Software Engineering would set you right away into a job as a Software Engineer. While more practical, coding is the bulk of the work for Software Engineers. For Software Engineers, coding is needed for development, maintenance, evaluation, and testing purposes. There’s no need to code further because Software Engineers are given a certain constraint to optimize software and move on with the next assignment.Certainly, the debate for whether majoring in Software Engineering is much more beneficial than Computer Science. This is questionable because Computer Science majors focus on the theory and foundations of Computation with some electives related to Software Engineering. As a result, it is possible to obtain a good understanding of the applications in Software Engineering to the real-world under a degree in Computer Science.Whatever choice you make, Computer Science degree holders tend to have more flexible career paths beyond becoming Software Engineers (e.g. Academia). While Software Engineering is still a lucrative career and job industry, the growth in job outlook is decreasing (or stagnated) and we don’t know if getting a degree in Software Engineering would be a worthwhile risk to partake in the near future.If your eyes are set to become a Software Engineer, then any of the two choices would be appropriate. However, I’d advice Computer Science over Software Engineering if you are unsure or just want to keep your options open.Best.
