PDF Editor FAQ

What misconception about your occupation would you like to clear up?

Doctors are very misunderstood people.Dr Chloe Abbott, 29, who took her own life in January this year, after her sister begged her to leave the profession.Dr John Moutzouris, 38, who committed suicide in January this year as well.Dr Ronak Patel, 33, died in car accident after falling asleep at the wheel while singing to his wife on a hands-free phone to try to stay awake.Kathryn Stascavage, 27, a med student, dead after falling eight stories from her dorm-room window.Dr Lauren Connelly, 24, exhausted young doctor veers off road and dies after gruelling nightshift.Dr Matthew Tuppeny, 30, a dedicated junior doctor who took his own life after fearing health problems would stop him from ‘being the best’ he could be.CAUGHT YOUR ATTENTION YET?This topic is close to my heart, and I’m here to shatter every single misconception people have about the medical profession.Doctors know exactly what they’re doing. This misconception stems from the fact that doctors typically speak with an air of confidence. We were trained to speak in this manner to instill confidence in our patients, to let them feel reassured that they are in good hands. You see, medicine has numerous murky territories. The human body is so mind-bogglingly complex that we can never truly be 100% certain of a diagnosis. Many medical conditions have vague presentations with no direct laboratory or imaging tests available. In those cases, we often have to do a bit of “guesswork”. But we are not allowed to show any weakness in front of patients. They expect us to solve their problems. And rest assured, we are doing the best we can with all the information available to us.Doctors earn good money. This is probably the most common one. If you want to be rich as quick as possible, medicine is NOT the go-to profession. People look at the news and they see famous plastic surgeons or neurosurgeons making headlines. Those are the top 0.1% of the profession and even they only start earning the big bucks after at least 20 years in the profession. A junior doctor in Singapore starts with a meagre 3k SGD monthly salary. Not too much higher than an average engineer. The increment isn’t huge too. Most doctors only start earning 5 digit sums after becoming a consultant, which is at least 10 years into the job. We do, however, work MUCH longer hours. A typical working day for a junior doctor is 6am-6pm depending on the specialty, which bring us to the next point.Doctors lead an easy life. I don’t even know where to begin for this one. Aside from the 12hr average working day, here in Singapore we have something known as being “on call.” A typical “on-call” day goes like this: Turn up for morning ward rounds as usual at 6am → work until 5pm and start your night shift → night shift lasts the entire night to 7am the next morning → CONTINUE with your usual morning ward rounds with your primary team until 1–2pm that day → FINALLY get your well-deserved post-call break of half a day — you are to turn up for work again the next day. Yes, you read that right. It’s 36 continuous hours in the hospital with little to no sleep. Every month we have to do at least 4 of these nightmare shifts. And it’s not just the working hours, it’s also the intensity of the work regime during the day. Unlike many jobs which have a designated time for lunch, we don’t have the luxury of time for that. Often I was forced to skip meals on a busy day. Is it then any surprise that hungry and tired doctors get into motor-vehicle accidents?Doctors are saints filled with compassion. Erm, quite on the contrary, bullying in medicine runs rampant. It is as old as the profession itself. This is at least in part an outcome of conservative traditional hierarchical structures and teaching methods in the medical profession which may result in a bullying cycle. Such teaching methods often involve senior physicians “grilling” junior doctors and medical students by asking them difficult technical questions in front of many healthcare staff and patients. Intimidation and humiliation are strong themes in these sessions where the victim is backed into a corner and made to feel as inadequate as possible. According to this article — Bullying in medicine, bullies are attracted to the caring professions, such as medicine, by the opportunities to exercise power over vulnerable clients, employees and students. Oh, it doesn’t just stop at bullying. Sexual harassment is a recurring theme, especially for women working in surgical specialties. And what happens to doctors who endured years of such practices before finally completing their consultant training course? They perpetuate the cycle. ‘If I had to go through that, you should too.’ Again, this bring us to the next point.Doctors are healthy people themselves. I mean, they are doctors right? Hmm.. lets see shall we? The grueling working hours along with the lack of self-esteem hammered into us and the pressure from patients and their family on us to perform had resulted in some interesting statistics:Approximately 9% of doctors reported having ever been diagnosed with or treated for an anxiety disorder (Australian population 5.9%), and 3.7% reported having a current diagnosis (Australian population 2.7%).Thoughts of suicide are significantly higher in doctors compared to the general population and other professionals (24.8% vs. 13.3% vs 12.8%). Approximately 2% of doctors reported that they had attempted suicide. In another study, it was shown that suicide attempts compared to the general population is 250% higher for female doctors and 70% higher for male doctors.According to NSW Coroner Michael Barnes, 20 doctors in NSW committed suicide from 2007 to 2016.I will say this once. I have ZERO respect for parents who force their children into the medical profession. Zero. Not only does it show massive ignorance on their part, it also displays a twisted sense of pride and ego. It was never about their child. It’s all about the child making them proud. Medicine is not a career which you just decide to enter because it pays well or gives you a certain degree of prestige. You really have to be passionate about the job to survive in it.So the next time you see a doctor, look into his or her eyes. See the person behind them. We are not robots or saints. We are just people, human. Many of us are broken people trying to fix other broken people. But often, nobody will be there to fix us when the time comes.Sources:Bullying in medicinehttp://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/junior-doctor-suicides-at-least-20-lives-lost-due-to-enormous-pressure/news-story/62606951f02d37f6365f6f00e4f492c2Indian-Origin Doctor Died As He Fell Asleep Behind Wheel In UKSuicide patterns among physicians related to other academics as well as to the general populationhttp://www.mdedge.com/currentpsychiatry/article/64274/depression/depression-and-suicide-among-physicianshttps://www.beyondblue.org.au/docs/default-source/research-project-files/bl1132-report---nmhdmss-full-report_webEdit: As requested by one of my viewers, this is the suicide hotline number in US and the emergency numbers for multiple countries. In the US Call the Suicide Prevention Line 1-800-273-8255 or the emergency number, 911.International Emergency NumbersAustralia 000New Zealand 111Fiji 000 or 911United Kingdom 112 or 999Ireland 112 or 999Turkey 112Switzerland 112India 102Hong Kong 999Israel 101 or 112Japan 119Nepal 102UAE 112Brazil 192Costa Rica 911S. Do you see it as a good or bad thing if exempt employees bring work home? What if it is not due to 'inability to get the job done' but rather just a preference?

Personally I had a bad experience with our accountant who took work home because she preferred working from home. She had ample time to complete tasks at work but preferred surfing the Internet. One fateful day she was involved in a motor vehicle accident and our private information was scattered all over the road. It took her months to reconstruct the list documents and we don’t know who had access to our privileged information. This practice was stopped with immediate effect. I believe work should be completed at the office and when employees go home they shouldn’t be working from home. That’s the healthy way! Confidentiality is another concern I have. If work is taken home the employer have no idea who will be able to view or have access to privileged and confidential information. Our entire staff salary details were strewn across the street during that accident. Had the work remained at work, this confidential information would have been at work. I prefer her searching the internet at home and completing her work during working hours at the office.

How do I get the truth from the police about a car accident I was in 6 years ago? They say I was the only driver involved & at fault but this is completely false.

About twenty or so years ago, my father was involved in a 3 car collision. The car to his front was stalled in the slow lane and there was E/B traffic in the lane to his immediate left. He was able to come to a complete stop but the car to his rear struck the rear of his car and pushed it into the rear of the stalled car.The CHP report concluded that my father was at fault because of what he said my father had said to him about what caused my father’s car to strike the stalled vehicle in the rear.As soon as we found out about the error we contacted the CHP office but they refused to make any correction of the report telling us the case was closed.I didn’t argue with the desk pogue employee who seemed to be of the opinion:MY MIND IS MADE UP…….DON’T TRY TO CONFUSE ME WITH FACTS.I took photographs of the locked wheel skid marks at the points of impact and of the front and rear damage to my father’s car. I had my father write a statement correcting the misinformation in the original report and returned to the CHP area headquarters.I referenced the CHP report number on the photos and document and handed them to the same employee who then said “You can’t just add anything you want to a report”. I advised him that I needed to speak with a SWORN member of the CHP, which really ticked him off.A CHP Lieutenant came out and I asked him WHY these items could not be added to the report. He said that my request was unusual but he did not know of any legal reason not to include the items in the report file.Although the CHP report remained unchanged in finding my father at fault, he was not cited and the Insurance Company rejected the findings in the CHP report and found my father not to have been at fault.Sometimes there is nothing you can do.Sometimes you have to be a pain in butt to get justice.Sometimes you just have to talk to the right people.Lots of luck……Jim
