What is the craziest thing that ever happened at Burning Man?

Crude Awakening Fireball sticks in my mind from the 2007 burn"Nine figurative steel sculptures, weighing 7 tons each and standing 30' tall, embody the faithful. In their various poses of worship from around the world, they bow down and reach forth to the Revered Oil Derrick, that icon of the religion which now stands above all others. The Derrick is a 90' tall wooden tower with stairs all the way to the sky. At any time, 200 people can amass on its upper platform while below, the nine faithful belch their fiery prayers from within and around their bodies. Each figure is bound by a participant-activated fire effect, created by Pyrokinetics. On Friday night at 10 pm, as the air raid siren wails and the battleship smoke generator pours forth its malevolent cloud, the Revered Oil Derrick will light up with a fire display like none before or ever after. A flame gusher will then explode from the center of the tower, creating 2.4 gigawatts of raw power in only one minute. You will bear witness to the largest flame cannon in history and the tower will fall.

What is it like to have relatively uneducated parents?

My mom studied upto 5th class and my father is a Diploma Engineer. My father was never bright in studies and he took two years to pass class 10 and two years to pass class 11. He passed always in second class and then got into Diploma in Civil Engineering from Lucknow. He got the job of a Junior Engineer in UP Irrigation Department. My father never believed in family planning or having a small family. It was perhaps due to the fact that he had 6 brothers and 3 sisters but only he and 2 sisters survived while 6 of his siblings died. We were 4 brothers and 1 sister till I got selected in IIT-BHU Varanasi in 1983.Since my parents were not much educated, we were also not prosperous. We were also a big family. We used to stay in two room house, which was actually a one room house which was half partitioned inthe middle to become two rooms. There was a tube-light across the partition which illuminated both the rooms. The roof was made of asbestos, which used to become extremely hot during summers. The schematic diagram of my house was as following.I and my younger brother Anand used to share the wooden cot in the first room. There was a study table next to the bed which used to be shared by two of my sibling with me. One would sit on the wooden cot and the other one in chair on the other side while I would sit in the middle. There were three beds on the other room which were all placed together where my parents and my three younger siblings slept. When we had guests from my village, a few of us would sleep on the floor. We had only ceiling fans and no coolers. The summers used to be intolerable when the mercury touched 45-46 degree centigrade in the summers. Summer was not the only problem. When there used to be a storm, we used to be quite scared that our roof would blow off. Once there was a heavy rain with hailstone (ola), which were falling on the roof with so much intensity that it was as it was blasted by bullets. We got so scarred that we hid under the wooden cots in case the roof came falling down.I can’t remember if my parents ever taught me. My mother was barely educated and my father had no interest in teaching. He perhaps also lacked confidence. He did not believe in sending children to good schools as he believed that if you have desire, you can study in any school. The quality of education in city was anyway better than what he had in his village. We were therefore send to the schools which were Hindi medium, with low fees and nearest to our home. I remember my first school called BBMS, where the teachers hardly taught. All teachers were ladies and usually housewives. My mami (mother’s sister in law) joined BBMS for some time with a salary of Rs 120 pm only which was even lower than the salary of the peon (Rs 200 pm) of the school. No wonder most teachers were of poor quality. They would usually tell important questions before the examination which would be nothing but the actual paper. Hence, we could all pass without much problem. The real problem came when we had to give the Board examination in Class VIII. I still remember how much slogging I did during that year and yet I got only 65% marks to pass the Board by first class.Since BBMS was only upto class VIII, I had to move out. I, thereafter, joined Centennial Higher Secondary School (CHSS),which was upto class X. It was some 6 km from my place and I used to go by bicycle. The quality of education was very poor there also and the teachers were only interested in private tuitions. One of the modus operandi of the teachers was to fail everyone during the half-yearly examination and then summon the father of the student to force them to get tuition from them. Many teachers even took the tuition in the school itself during the free classes rather than calling the student at home. However, it was in CHSS that I started showing potential. I was among the few who could not be failed by any teacher despite their best effort. I also got the first rank in School in Class IX. I later passed class X with Honours with four distinctions.I joined Government Jubliee Inter College(GJIC) in Lucknow for my Intermediate (10 +2). Here I was introduced to much better quality of students and I became friend with one Alok Mathur whose two elder brothers were in IIT Kanpur and his father was a Gold Medalist of IIT Roorkee. He was properly guided by his parents and brothers, which he used to share with me.This really helped me tremendously. One of the typical thing I remember even today is that Alok used to take all notes in English though the teachers used to teach in Hindi. He told me that he was doing it on the advice of his brothers because all the papers of IIT would be in English and unless we have some familiarity with English, it would be difficult to crack IIT. He also advised me to join ‘Agarwal Classes’ (Postal Coaching) which I did not join due to my conviction that I should not take any tuition or coaching. This continues to be my greatest regret of life. Please read Awdhesh Singh (अवधेश सिंह)'s answer to What is the one thing you regret doing or not doing the most in your life?Human beings are strange creatures. When they are pitted against a formidable challenge, they either get crushed or emerge stronger. Even though I was brought up in much difficult situation, I never felt inferior in those times. I still remember that I used to switch off the fans of my room while studying even in peak summers. I used to enjoy sweating because I would not be feeling sleepy. I was so proud of doing everything of my own that when Alok offered to join a postal coaching, I refused because that would have proven that I also needed support of others to succeed.I had the fire to succeed and desire to prove the world that you can achieve anything by sheer hard work and determination. Now I am an IRS officer and I have provided the best facilities to my children. I even regularly taught them during their schools. However, they could not achieve as much as me because they perhaps do not have that fire in them and the desire to prove something to the world.I have fond memories of my childhood and I respect my parents for what they have done for me. They did what they thought was best for us. I can’t say that I would have been better off, if they would have been more educated.
