College Basketball: What sites offer points per possession statistics for CBB teams?

The granddaddy of them all is Ken Pomeroy's site. (2013 Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings). Not only does Ken track per-possession statistics for each team, he also bakes in various secret-sauce competition adjustments to his Pythag rankings, and his team profiles, conference landing pages and various other trinkets (FanMatch, kPOY, etc.) are insanely informative. No other site helps me understand the statistics of college hoops -- how what I see matches up with what goes down into the box score -- more.Basketball Prospectus comes close. (Basketball Prospectus). John Gasaway has been doing the tempo-free hoops thing since 2004. Now he's the editor of Prospectus. Their preseason guide is indispensable, but their in-season content -- especially Tuesday Truths, but also great scouting stuff from Drew Cannon and analyses from Kevin Pelton -- is well worth a subscription as well.Statsheet (http://statsheet.com/mcb) is a great sort of all-in-one college hoops stats site. You can get just about anything you need there, advanced or otherwise, and they offer lots of embeddable charts which reduce your legwork if you're trying to make numbers accessible to readers (or, I suppose, to yourself). Then there are the other rankings sites, which are worth keeping an eye on: LRMC (LRMC (Bayesian) results through games of 1/17/2013), Massey (Massey Ratings), Sagarin (Jeff Sagarin computer ratings - USATODAY.com), and, where I work, the Dean Oliver-developed Basketball Power Index (NCAA College Basketball BPI Rankings), which is a handy rankings system and also a potential model for what could one day replace the NCAA's RPI.This is, of course, just the tip of the iceberg. There are a ton of follows on Twitter and a ton of smaller but worthwhile (and potentially even *wonkier*) sites too numerous to list here.So much knowledge in the CBB, it's kind of hard being … OK, I'll stop. Enjoy!

NCAA Basketball Tournament (Men's): Is it just me, or are upsets becoming more and more common as time goes on?

It's just you. Sure, two out of the six times a #15 has beaten a #2 happened this year, but it's the first time in eleven years. In the eleven years before that, it happened four times. Having it happen twice in one year doesn't mean that upsets are on the rise as much as it means that Missouri and Duke were very, very flawed teams with Duke relying to heavily on 3-pointers, while Missouri was an absolutely abysmal defensive team (there were only eleven teams that gave up fewer points per possession than Missouri this year in thetournament). The following chart shows the number of upsets in the round of 64 and the round of 32 since 2000.

Are there any indicators in a birth chart that make someone more likely to be gay? When an astrologer is looking at a birth chart for clues related to someone's love life, will they look at the chart differently if the person is homosexual?

This subject has been bandied about here and there through the years, and I have given it a great deal of thought. I’ve studied many many charts of people who are gay or any other members of the LBGTQ community. I’ve also compared those charts with many many charts from the straight community. The cosmos doesn’t know or care about an individual’s sexual orientation (editing change, thanks to a suggestion from Steve Pollack). There are individuals who knew they were gay but hid in the closet for years because of society’s prejudices against them. I have no doubt there are still some people who are afraid to come out of the closet. In the news again, we’re hearing about the pedophile priests from all over the world. Many engaged in the molestation and more of some children. Many of those children were male. Consider Jerry Sandusky who was convicted of “Involuntary deviant sexual intercourse, indecent assault, criminal intent to commit indecent assault, unlawful contact with minors, corruption of minors, endangering welfare of children” and sent to prison for 30–60 years. He might be able to get paroled in 2042 if he’s still alive. I wouldn’t hold my breath on that however. But you’ve asked about our seeing homosexuality in the chart. So let’s look at Sandusky’s chart. Even in its untimed state one might be able to see something, right? So let’s see!I see the chart of an individual who was quite likely to have thought love had to hurt (9th house Venus in opposition to Saturn on the 3rd house cusp.) I heard the grumblings of, “But he has Venus in the 9th!” Well of course he does! He was an assistant athletics coach at Pennsylvania State University under the wing of Joe Paterno. I don’t even follow American football, but even I know that name!Sandusky was convicted of these abuses for at least 20 years and possibly as many as 40 or more years. But he was married, and he and his wife had 6 children. One of his sons, an adoptee, was one of Sandusky’s victims. That son is in prison a few more years for sexual assault of a child and possession of child porn. But I won’t bother with him: He prefers females, not males like Sandusky prefers and denies.Venus is also beautifully trine to Jupiter Rx in the 5th house. Will those astrologers who make such claims look at that? How will they decide he is gay and not bisexual? After all, he was married to his wife 46 years by the time he was convicted and sent to prison. I believe they’re still married. He does have Mars-Uranus conjunction and Mars rules his chart. Sorry. That’s not enough either. Venus not only reflects love, it reflects our buying power, musical tastes, the ambiance of a restaurant, or—as it does in Sandusky’s case—Venus Rx in the 9th reflects his career as an assistant athletics coach at a top university, and he earned it. Quoting from the Wikipedia biography where I linked his name above, “he was a good student and standout athlete, playing baseball, basketball, and football.[17] He was a leader on his junior high basketball team that went undefeated through the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League playoffs in his final season there.[17] His classmates have described him as a studious "loner" who "never dated in high school" but was a popular and handsome athlete.”I know. There will be some astrologers who see that “loner [who] never dated in high school but was a popular and handsome athlete” and find inference in it. But inference is not proof! One does not stay married 46 years without some very strong ties.In the untimed chart (I suspect this could be a pretty good guess for accuracy btw of the chart time, but I didn’t make that particular leap of faith to one aspect or another. It’s only a hunch.), Jupiter rules the 9th house in the natural zodiacal chart and sits in Sandusky’s 5th house. The 5th house is the first house where we might look for sports although the 6th would also be pretty close in terms of work. Nevertheless, the 5th house linkage to the 9th and Venus makes a world of sense to me. Such an aspect focuses on his having been a “standout athlete” who played basketball, baseball and football. His playing those sports and being a “standout athlete” doesn’t point to his sexuality either. There is an inherent danger in assumption, regardless of the reasons or the self-aggrandizing belief one can see something that’s not there. Were that the case, then astrologers claiming they can see homosexuality in the chart should also be able to see the charts of couples getting married and confront the one whose chart “looks” homosexual and tell them with a straight face that they shouldn’t get married because “that particular chart shows your future husband/bride is homosexual!” Nonsense! Absolutely, positively, 100% nonsense!I specifically chose Sandusky’s chart because of the number of male children he had violated for decades. It still doesn’t prove he’s gay. It could imply he’s bisexual.I’m going to include Billie Jean King’s chart here now too; but I have no doubt there will be those assumptions again—her Capricorn Ascendant in the minds of those who claim otherwise, might be indicative of her being “butch” in some minds. But how soon they may forget that she was married 20 years. Perhaps those who say they can see will associate that Mars-Uranus conjunction in Sandusky’s chart and point to Billie Jean’s Mercury-Uranus opposition even though the latter bestows her with a marvelous ability to quip. She does have a lovely 8th house Moon-Neptune-Venus stellium however—and I’d say that stellium does well in keeping her actively involved, creative, and the ability to work in partnership with others. And now I’ll go on with one more for those who want to toy. Here’s Mark Spitz’s chart. To be sure he’s a strong individual. He’s overcome a lot of challenges in his life, and while he knows the art of independence and dependence, he maintains his public stance with dignity and the ability to know how to respond to the hard questions. In order to test the charts for this “homosexual trait,” one must understand that the challenges still lay with avoiding the tendency to apply thoughts of those sexual preferences based on the astrologer’s biases and prejudices. It’s not fair to the client. Astrologers can no more tell who is straight, who is gay or any other category; and if the cosmos knows, it’s not telling either! None of us want someone traipsing through our bedrooms to find out what’s true and what’s not. The astrological chart is not a bedroom either.Hope that helps.
