I am not sure, Ignacio, as I have never filled out an application that wasn’t self explanatory. If given the option, however, I would look at including information that shows your grades, attendance record, hobbies, extra curricular activities, goals and ambitions. Is it?Competition…?There’s no competition.Hermione could very likely have been the only girl (in Gryffindor) who applied for prefectship (if, indeed, there was an application process), or the only girl considered on the basis of her academic results/general behaviour.Glory/honour/whatever you want to call it…?Nope.Our prefects were either goody two-shoes who got made fun of for ‘playing the teacher’, or a right bunch of scamps who’d be out smoking behind the cricket nets during lunch break.Sounds a bit like Hermione and Ron, don’t you think?I’m sure you can figure out which lot the rest of us were fonder of…Responsibilities…?Many of our prefects (some of whom were my friends) found it difficult to adjust to the list of thou-shalt-do-this/thou-shalt-not-do-that, and didn’t do as well on their A Levels as some of us who’d dodged that bullet the minute we saw it coming.At our school, it was a LOT of work for very little gain.Prefects’ duties at Hogwarts sound somewhat similar.Higher education/job market…?Qualifications >>>> prefectshipMy friend N ➔ prefect, with great exam resultsClassmate D ➔ perpetual class bunker, receiver of weekly detentions, and winner of many prizes for academics and extracurricularsGuess which one was admitted to the better uni (with a full scholarship)?I’m willing to bet top-tier Ministry employees weren’t all ex-prefects.Like Hogwarts’ house system, this seems to be something that gets over-glorified by fans, when it’s really…quite mundane.We never viewed prefects as individuals occupying impressive posts — they were just prefects. Just students assigned extra duties to try keeping order, who could occasionally be quite annoying (though we’d sometimes feel sorry for them, too).I can only assume a prefectship at Hogwarts is impressive because…well, it’s Hogwarts.

Why isn't more effort put into geothermal energy research?There is a judgement by researchers and investors that the returns are better elsewhere.Surely we have all the energy we could ever want under our feet.We do. It just happens that we have better and cheaper resources elsewhere.There is a swimming pool near me that uses geothermal heating. It is the prefect application - low grade hot water from bores is used for heating the pool water, a simple exchange, minimal losses.This project has a payback of more than 20 years. The perfect project.Compared with domestic solar PV, with a payback of 2–6 years.Numbers don’t lie.In some places, geothermal will work and work well. But not everywhere and not even in most places.
