His moral elevators not rising to our demanding, don’t-kill-your-offspring levels by the fact it/he was aware all mortal life is temporary and has made a conscious decision to live above that level of emotional interaction. “Consider yourself part of the furniture…”Ego could no more be interested in mortal beings (unless they serve a need, ala, Mantis, or one of his gene-donors) than you would be in maintaining a relationship with your hair brush.Ego was an immoral god-scientist engaged in unlicensed genetic engineering, likely, since no one knew they needed to give consent, it/he engaged in illegal genetic experimentation on living hosts, with the intent of creating compatible offspring by which he could extend his personal energies. What happened to all of those incompatible entities if their DNA wasn’t up to snuff or Ego’s abilities needed a bit of fine tuning…? “Serving number 368…”These offspring were no more than a battery-enhancing mechanism to assist him in powering or activating his nano-technological terraforming devices he left behind on any world he was genetically-compatible with.All of his appearances of affection were feigned, a means of manipulating people by making them compliant of their own free will. Perhaps it made the later interactions easier than if he had to create a particular environment to house the mother, take the children, and then raise them. This way, the child is cared for, raised with no effort on his part. Thus also allowing him to continue his holy work on other worlds.However, with all that said…I think Ego had a moment of real personal interaction, a sense of almost-fatherhood when he came to realize Peter could access the inner planetary energy so easily. As a father, I related to that sense of “wow, he did it…” which Kurt Russell managed to convey in every one of their scenes together.I think he came to realize he was in the presence of an immortal being, who was truly like himself and he didn’t have to be alone any more.
