PDF Editor FAQ

Do you believe the British government will deliver the will of the people?

By the time the British Government are near to achieving the will of the people, the people will have changed their minds. The thing government should be working towards is what Henry Ireton penned in 1647/48. The Agreement of the People. We, the people need to be putting in the effort to make Government work, but we just leave everything to other people. The true will of the people is to live in Utopia, with people to clean up after us and fix us when we have got so fat that with the right kind of Liposuction, one of us could power a thirty ton wagon from Lands End to John O Groats.I believe that fast food should be taxed by individual body mass index. “Burger Sir? “. “Please roll yourself onto the scale. “. “That is four pounds for the burger and eight pounds for BMI tax. “NEXT”.The national health service would not have a problem if we treated ourselves better.

Will a lean and fit lawyer have any advantage over a flabby and overweight lawyer in terms of the impression they create over briefing attorneys and clients?

That depends on whether the client is trying to hire the best fashion model or the best lawyer. Those looking for the best lawyer tend to focus on factors such as experience, reputation, knowledgeable referrals, etc.I've never had a potential client say, "I've reviewed your numerous articles and presentations and talked with others in the industry who say you are the expert on tax issues in automotive finance and insurance reinsurance structures, but your BMI just doesn't work for me."

Should overweight people pay a "fat tax" to cover health care costs?

This is an interesting question. Money is one of life’s greatest motivators for most people. Money motivates many people to do something they wouldn’t otherwise do (go to work, for instance). I do think avoiding a tax penalty would be a huge motivator for people to improve their lifestyle. However, I don’t think it’s morally proper.Unlike some posters on here, I don’t subscribe to the notion that obesity is ever healthy. That is to say, I believe obesity is always unhealthy. (There may be an argument that people slightly over the accepted cut-off of “overweight” — BMI > 25 — may be no less healthy than a normal weight person, but I’m talking obese here.) The problem is, while many people are obese because of their own bad habits (overeating, not exercising enough), many people are obese because of underlying conditions — depression, hormonal disorders, disability, medications, etc.I have a cousin-in-law who is morbidly obese. Should she be levied a tax penalty? One might categorically say “yes”, at this point. But what if I told you that she was a normal weight her whole life until 16 years ago when — after getting a botched epidural while delivering her son — she was rendered a paraplegic. There’s an obvious reason for her obesity, and there’s very little she can do about it. You can’t just tell her to go jog. She’s restricted to her wheelchair. Diet might help a little bit, but she’s really in a sad situation. So, would it work? Probably for a lot of people. It might actually do a lot to fix the obesity epidemic. Is it morally the right thing to do? Abso-fricking-lutely not. (Also bear in mind that obesity disproportionately affects the poor, many of whom don’t pay much in taxes anyway. Taxing them more would make them poorer and possibly make it harder to lose weight as they wouldn’t be able to afford to take time to exercise or afford healthier foods.)On the other hand, rewards for people who maintain a normal weight…that would be interesting.Hope that helps answer your question,Dr. Paul
