This left the instructor pilot as the sole occupant. He was wearing a parachute but was not in an ejection seat, all of which had departed the aircraft, but it seemed to him that the airplane was flying just fine on autopilot and he contacted the command post for advice. Since there was now no place for a pilot to sit to operate the controls, they decided to put the autopilot into a descent aimed for unpopulated terrain and have the instructor pilot bail out as well, which he successfully did, through the open bomb bay.
