I was an Olympiad medalist, and took my first grad course in my first semester at MIT. And yeah, I struggled.There's always more to do. It's not like high school; you can go out in search of challenges, and you'll get as much as you could possibly want. I knew people who could think circles around me...and they knew people who could think circles around them...and this seemed to be universally true.What really helps is good self-management. I didn't have this - I'd never been forced to develop study skills, or anything else resembling time-and-energy management skills, and I was pretty slow to recognize and correct it. So I got my nose rubbed in it, repeatedly.Brains don't exempt you from hitting the wall, because on the scale of science itself, we're all idiots. My analogy is that humans learning science is akin to pigeons learning calculus - it really doesn't matter if you're pigeon Einstein, the scale of the problem is such that the difference is negligible. Unless you've got a notebook full of solved Millennium problems, a cure for cancer, and an explanation for dark matter...shut your brag hole and get back to work, pigeon.

This is a very interesting question for me and, as usual, I have an answer for you!When the Discovery mission STS-120 launched in late October of 2007, I knew I was going home. I had spent nearly 5 months living and working aboard the International Space Station (ISS), but I worked extremely hard to NOT think about returning to earth. I needed to keep my focus on the mission, and not start daydreaming of reuniting with my family… for fear something would happen to “upset the apple cart.”My wife and I had discussed this many times. “What ifs” abounded with regard to the negative possibilities a space launch and mission could entail (think Challenger and Columbia). In the latter portion of my 5-month stay, we had both agreed we could “stick it out a little longer.” By that we meant postponing our longed-for reunion for another month or two would be survivable… but not necessarily desirable. Much longer than that would present a hardship for both of us.You may ask why? Why would an astronaut —living their dream, flying in outer space, pushing the boundaries of science, becoming more famous with every single day, and every single Tweet— want to come back? Why not stay up longer, and do more good for our planet and the people of our world? My answer is simple. I had a wife and children I loved. My place was back on earth, and Twitter didn’t exist. Don’t forget that my spouse was running our entire household all by herself… and for much longer than just the short time I was in space. She had become the focus of our kids and our family’s Chief Operations Officer way back when I started to travel back and forth to Russia during a 3.5 year training endeavor. She assumed every role —mom, dad, nurse, lawn care provider, chauffeur, repair person, counselor, financier— you name it, she did it! She had sacrificed much, including her personal career advancement, for me to live my dream. To me, that’s what love is all about.Please understand, my time in space was wonderful. It was exciting, it was incredibly challenging and rewarding, and it was fun! I would love to go back…, on my terms, not NASA’s. But my life’s priorities are not negotiable, and my family is right there at the top.Keep lookin’ up!

Oh, dear. Your therapist “confirmed” this?In spite of BPD being an insult as much as a diagnosis, especially when directed against women, and in spite of the fact that making such a diagnosis is challenging and requires skill and the investment of significant time with the client, at least a few hours and possibly much more, to suggest, much less “confirm” such a diagnosis, your therapist made this determination, as a fact?It’s quite unethical for a therapist to diagnose people they’ve never seen, or seen only briefly, whether it’s an ex-president or your friend. It’s also useless, pointless, and just plain rude to confront someone with the claim that they have a specific personality disorder, especially one that is stigmatized? Particularly an “ex-friend” who discarded you?It’s not your place to share this bogus, amateur diagnosis with her (bogus and amateur because made without primary data), with anybody, least of all your ex-friend.If you are really worried about her, start with compassion-at-a-distance. Ask her permission to be in contact with her, probably not in person. If she says yes, offer kind support, mention positive memories from when you were friends, and let her know that you wish her well, and that she is in your thoughts. Forget the BPD crap. There is no way confronting her with that could be kind or helpful.
