First – iOS was more suited for traditional app developers – so they could attract new developers easily. Apple has ONE phone. Apple also established a well known and respected app store with AT&T and the app companies could expect to keep a large part of the sale. Apple managed to get AT&T to agree to add WiFi to the phone. Finally (and this one is the big reason) is that users could easy discover and download applications. Users were getting rich content delivered and now, for the first time, there was LARGE demand for applications.Post iPhone, Nokia made several mistakes but had way too many technical problems to address. Nokia was also very protective of the home screen – this was a huge problem for apps companies. Without users pulling content, there is no business case. Downloaded applications on symbian still show up 2 menu levels down and you have to customize the Home Screen manually.Ultimately Nokia had to address the UI, app store, phone quality, and still try to deliver compelling phones. Even if Nokia managed to get Qt on the phone – it would not change the business case for apps companies.By the time the pieces were coming together for Nokia, Apple and Google were established. Apple owned the high end, Google the mid range and momentum had shifted away from Nokia.
