PDF Editor FAQ

What do you think about my cover letter for a data science position at Quora?

A couple of points beyond what others have mentioned:Distill information on Quora usageYour experience as a user gives you insight into how users interact with the site. It's an advantage for this job, but I think you could summarize why in three sentences or less, then move on to other topics. Right now the first through third paragraphs are almost entirely devoted to your experience as a user: you need that space for other purposes (and for a shorter cover letter overall).Highlight relevant skillsYour cover letter mentions your experience with the relevant programs and programming languages, but what about other required skills? You have research experience in undergrad and grad school, including significant coursework in applied math. What "appropriate methods and metrics" did you have to "help devise" for those projects? And why not mention how you have "design[ed] randomized controlled experiments" and used "large distributed datasets to conduct analysis?"Down-to-earth intro and conclusionI think your curiosity and your vision for Quora are admirable, but the intro and conclusion should be toned down. The statement "I want to know everything" does not help the company see you as a focused person looking for stable employment. The last paragraph doesn't summarize your skills or interest in this position at all.Career contextThis will be the elephant in the room: help the recruiter under your situation, or he/she might dream up unflattering reasons why you would not mention that you are enrolled in a Ph.D. program. What aspects of the day-to-day work of a Data Scientist appeal to you? What kind of career path are you seeking and how does this fit in? What time commitment (part vs. full, one year vs. indefinite) are you looking to invest? If your timeframe resembles an internship, would you consider the internship version of the position?Succinct resume-like CVSince you don't have room to discuss everything in the cover letter, you will rely on your CV for more info. It needs to be shorter and more accessible if you want it to be read.Research interests should match this job offeringI would cut the references to class projects, reduce other research descriptions to 2-3 bullet points - ideally not full sentences - each (1 for description, 1-2 for skills learned or employed). Combine any experiences with the same professor under one heading if possible.I would remove the h-index and citations profile for space concerns: you could just hyperlink each publication to its arXiv entry.Would also cut the "Other" section for space concerns.Make it clear which programming languages you have used in research situations/other projects to demonstrate your proficiency. "Comfortable" sounds vague. I would put markup languages like [math]\latex[\math] and HTML/CSS, as well as vim, under "Other Technical Skills/Programs".Cut the section on summer programs, but do mention oral presentations at national or international conferences and peer-reviewed papers/manuscripts in the corresponding sections of the CV.I have been advised to leave everything pre-college off the CV itself, but in your case, you could probably mention the placement/early college entry as bullet points under "College" in the education section. If you'd like to use your pre-college experiences as evidence of your capacity for independent learning, mention them explicitly in the cover letter.Good luck with the application!

Can I change employers while my opt stem application is pending?

Note:: This is not a legal advice, Just sharing my experience.I did, I got my EAD on time, just be perfect..!! I-765, I-983, new i-20, photocopy of your previous receipt.before sending them the request, I also read lot of articles online and got really worried and tensed, but decided to take a risk but in a very professional manner.while sending it to USCIS, I mailed them to the potomac center which previously received my application(mentioned below on the receipt). Wrote a cover letter explaining details of previous employer, wrote details of new employer and request to change the employer to the new one.Wrote an index of all the documents attached, mentioned sequential order of the documents attached.Steps I followed while doing this:1. Submit new offer letter to DSO.2. Get new i-20 from university.3. Photocopy and sign the new i-20.4. Get the i-983 filled from new employer.5. Fill up new i-765.6. Write a cover letter requesting change in employer7. Write an index of all attached documents (Write in bold on the top ‘Request for change in Employer for receipt no: xxxxxxxx’ Highlight this with a highlighter).8. Photocopy of the previous receipt you received.9. Send the package to potomac center from where you received the receipt.10. Wait for your case status to get updated and say ‘Correspondence received’.Thanks for reading, Hope this helpsAgain……This is not a legal advice, I just shared my experience.

When applying for a job, should I write both an application letter and a cover letter?

A cover letter is medium dependant. If you send your application by email, the message itself would be the cover letter (“THIMC, I hereby apply to the xyz position, as specified in your asdfgh add. Please see attached my application letter (the thing stating my intentions and expectations), as well as my CV/resume (the thing which summarises my skills and experience). Kind regards, yours truly.”).If you send it by fax, it’d be nice to have a Fax Cover (that’s a thing, look it up). In such case, the fax cover will be your cover letter. It should state the total number of pages, as a minimum, as well as sender, CC and reply-to contact details. Much like an email header, but primitive style. If it’s a paper-based uber-bueraucracy you might have to actually present a cover letter, as a form on Index (another thing to look up) of your application documents. Something like “application letter …. page 2, CV ….. page 4, Annex 1, references…. page 8, Annex 2, certificates…”. Yes, if you encounter such organizations, you should totally write 2-pager applications and 4-pager CV’s. For all of the other cases mentioned above, cutting those figures in half is highly recommended. You get the point. Good luck!
