I have only cheated once "for real" and one other time just to demonstrate a possibility. Both were in high school. I wanted to test out an idea that I'd heard, and it kind of worked, but not as expected. I took a high quality photograph of the vocabulary list using black and white film and had the negatives developed. (I can't remember what film, ASA, etc I used to get a sharp enough focus. Did use a tripod, I recall.)The negative, when cut out just looked like a random piece of plastic. Only well placed on something white and looked at closely could it be read (my eyesight was bad back then, but a lot better than today).So that was the idea. But if I was going to actually manage to fiddle with this little piece of plastic and then be able to read it without giving myself away. The best of the shots was still barely legible without extremely obvious actions. So I practiced. I practiced a lot. And through my practice, I learned those vocabulary words for the French quiz.I did actually bring that negative to class, but was too scared to actually try to use it live, and furthermore I had no need to. I'd learned the material through all of the practice I'd done with it.Sliding a ruleThe second occasion was somewhat similar in that the goal was not actually to improve my test score through cheating, but it was to demonstrate an idea.Some of our math and science exams had rules that excluded calculators and slide rules. Although calculators and slide rules were banned, we were allowed to bring graph paper. And there was nothing in the rules about whether that graph paper could be logarithmic scale graph paper (this was also something that existed back then). Anyway, you can take two pieces of log graph paper and make a slide rule.We did this openly, and were pretty much allowed to get away with it (once) because the teacher was well aware that none of us could really use a slide well enough to get much of an advantage.
