From my experience (helping event managers with event registration), the most stressful moment is when the client changes their mind about some detail last minute. And I mean the event manager’s client, not ours.Imagine this: you got your objectives and guidelines from your client so you start brainstorming, planning, making arrangements, designing processes. You contact your event registration provider, discuss the registration process, and come up with an efficient process that meets all the client’s expectations.After some time, the provider comes back to you, you review the website and registration form, make some corrections, and when they’re done, you’re satisfied with the result. It’s safe, reliable, looks good and is attendee-friendly. So you check that on your to-do list (after showing it to your client and they approve) and move your attention to other things.A week or so later, the registration opens and the client tells you that actually, they need attendees to select exactly two panels from each track and they cannot take place at the same time. You are somewhat irritated because they had time to do that and now it’s you who needs to contact the provider and ask to modify the system. But that’s okay, let’s ask the provider, maybe it’s not a problem.And then, when I hear about such a major change once the registration has already started… Let’s just say I’m not very happy about it. I do want to help you, it’s just that last-minute changes are risky and could have been avoided. You see, there is a way to introduce such functionality, even end users can do it. BUT. This requires JavaScript and JavaScript requires testing. Obviously, we won’t start adding JS into a live registration form, we’ll make a copy. Still, it needs to be tested and rushed (the registration is open, remember?) testing is no good. I’m nervous if the code does its job. You and the stakeholders are nervous because you want perfectly working code ASAP.Everybody is stressed because of one last-minute change. Maybe this story (I made it up but these things happen) doesn’t sound very professional but event managers will admit that this is how things sometimes are… won’t you?So this is my answer. Rushed, last-minute changes are the main culprit when it comes to frustration. And they are a challenge to handle.

I worked for a Big Corp once, I worked for myself several times. I was solo at times, had small teams, and had larger teams. I’ve worked with kickass co-founders and team mates overtime. In all these ventures I was on the tech side of things, either as a developer, team leader, CTO, co-founder, or all at the same time. And to be honest, I did more mistakes than I can count, but learned a few things about the journey to find product-market-fit in an early stage startup, and how to grow past it.If you’re just starting out, avoid some of the mistakes that can kill your company in it’s infancy. If you’re looking for a tech co-founder, maybe you don’t even need one at this point. If you’re a tech founder yourself, beware of the pitfalls of overthinking product in the early days.Build it, they will comeThey will not! At least, not the way you think.The biggest mistake is to think product first, sales second. If you haven’t generated demand for your value proposition, who will be served by the product you’re building? Go get some demand, before building anything. This is especially true for B2B startups, if you get commitment from a key prospect (with a LOI, for example), you then can have real expectations about building the actual product.Beware the heavy liftingKeep in mind that if no one is interested in your value proposition you’ve just saved yourself a lot of time, money and energy. Now you can just move on to the next pivot.On the other hand, if you get real commitment from a few prospects, you are in a much better shape to approach both investors and developers than you were before.The best MVP is no MVP at allIf you’re B2B your MVP is probably a slideshow presentation and a spreadsheet. You just need to find the key stakeholders in the companies who you need to meet with, build a presentation to let them envision how your product will look like and what it will do, build a spreadsheet showing the money you will help them make/save, and test your assumptions.If you’re a B2C company probably your MVP looks like a landing page or a registration form. You need to get a good amount of people attracted by your value proposition. Spend some bucks on bringing people to your landing page, create an easy signup page (that leads nowhere) to gather leads.Beware of the first hiresOnce you have initial traction, it’s time to hire some developers to build it (or build it yourself if you can). You’ll be in position to attract both co-founders and/or pre-seed money, and you’ll make your first tech hires (even if you’re a tech co-founder, you’ll need to hire developers at some point to speed things up).The biggest challenge in early tech hires, is to make them relate directly to your revenue streams. What features will each developer build, and how will they relate to your revenue streams? Make those two items inseparable, otherwise you’ll see your time and money draining into non-essential features that will eventually tank your company. Also keep in mind that your company and product will change a lot in the coming months. How will these developers adapt and reframe? Make sure to hire adaptable and multi purposed hustler developers, not specialists.Growing the tech team too fastOnce you have your first paying customers, and already with a few product pivots under your belt, you’re past product-market-fit, and in great need of speeding things up and scale. Unless you have a ton of money in the bank, wait until as late as you can to do it. You’ll start hiring aggressively, your money will disappear fast, and your ability to pivot will be greatly diminished with more people on board.You’ll now have some tech people onboard, and those will most likely be deeply underwater and begging you to bring people to help them. At this stage it is ok to start optimizing for scale instead of speed, but make sure those features are still narrowly connected to your revenue streams.Eventually, for most companies, you’ll have more tech people than non-tech people from an early stage. Make sure that your sales are still driving the company and that you’re building tech to feed your sales, and not the other way around.ConclusionBuilding a global highly successful company takes time and patience. Not you or anyone will do it without hiccups along the way, and pivots that reframe everything. My advice is to keep as lean as you can for as long as you can. You’ll save yourself some serious trouble, and increase your chances of success.
