When I was 11 years old and in sixth grade in the early 1970s, I studied at a public school in one of the poorer sections of the town of Río Piedras, Puerto Rico.Although the school system did not provide religious studies, Puerto Rico was at the time (and still is) a predominantly Catholic country, and even as the only Muslim in the school, I was well-versed in Christian tradition.My Spanish teacher was a fundamentalist religious nut,who once told me that she “wept” because I was such a nice girl, but if I would be going to HELL™ because I was “a non-believing Saracen” (her words). Mind you, she was not a bad person, but her bias was telling.One day, as the Easter break approached, one of the students asked why the Holy Week started on Thursday rather than on Good Friday. The Bible-thumping teacher stated, with absolute faith and conviction:“Jueves Santo murió Cristo” (Christ died on Good Thursday)“Viernes fue su Santo entierro” (Friday was his Holy burial)“Sabado resucitó” (He returned from the dead on Saturday)“Y Domingo subió al Cielo” (and Sunday, He rose to Heaven)“Obviamente, el Miércoles fue la última cena.” (Obviously, Wednesday was the Last Supper.)My jaw dropped. I simply could not let this degree of stupidity go uncorrected. I said “¡Eso no es cierto!” (That is not true!), to which she chuckled and said: “¿Y tu que sabes de la Pasión de Jesucristo?” (And what do you know of the Passion of Christ?)The 11-year-old Muslim girl then proceeded to teach Catechism to a Bible-thumper in public school:“Está escrito en la Sagrada Biblia que el profeta Jesús, paz venga a su nombre, murió en la cruz en día antes del Sabbat; como Sabbat es Sábado, su martirio tuvo que ser unViernes. La última cena ocurrió la noche anterior, un Jueves. La resurrección ocurrió al tercer día; Domingo, y entonces pasaron cuarenta días antes de ser milagrosamente alzado al cielo por Dios. Lea Lucas, Marcos, y Actos apostólicos.”(It is written in the Holy Bible that the prophet Jesus, peace be upon him, died on the cross on the day before the Sabbath; since Sabbath is Saturday, his martyrdom had to take place of Friday. The Last Supper took place the previous night, on Thursday. The resurrection took place on the third day; Sunday, and then followed forty days before his miraculous Ascension into Heaven. Not a single Jewish response here! How interesting. Well, I guess I’ll be the first.For Jews, it’s really simple because we speak Hebrew and the days of the week are conveniently named “first day, second day, third day, etc” until on the 7th day, it is Shabbat. And which day is day 7? Saturday.The reason Christians chose Sunday instead of Saturday is kind of interesting and goes back to when the Roman Empire stopped persecuting the Christians and made their religion the official imperial faith. The thing is though, they were a bit nervous about alienating the Mithraites, who were also a popular religion in the Empire, and their cult of Sol Invictus (the Undefeated Sun). İn an act of typical Roman pragmatism, they simply combined the two into a single religion, adopting both the cross and the sun as symbols (which, among other things, is why saints all have haloes).Although most European languages still show that Saturday is Shabbat (Sabado in Spanish, Szombat in Hungarian, Subbota in Russian) Sunday became “The Lord’s Day” (Domingo in Spanish, Dimanche in French, etc). Jews just kept on counting as ever (day one, two, three etc).German Reform Judaism, which emerged in the 19th Century as a way to try to help Jews be less “Jew-y”, experimented with moving shabbat to Sunday to fit in more with the Christians but it never really took off- Jews know what day it is.Anyway, from a Jewish perspective, non-Jewish people can pick any day they want and celebrate it as they see fit. For us however, the day is fixed and there’s no playing with it. If you can count, you know when it’s shabbat.
