The typical path to becoming a Landscape Architect in the United States requires a degree from an accredited LA program at a University, practicing under a licensed Landscape Architect for a certain time period (depending on state) and then taking the professional licensing test known as the LARE. The record on the first question is mixed. Albert Gore (I never heard any Tennessean call him Al) was one of only three Southern senators who refused to sign the Southern Manifesto of 1956 opposing racial integration. The other two were Lyndon B. Johnson, then Senate majority leader, and Tennessee’s other senator, Estes Kefauver. Gore had a mixed record on civil rights legislation, voting against the 1964 Civil Rights Act but for the Voting Rights Act the next year. His record reflected the view Tennesseans had of their state as being more reasonable than the hotheads of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. Even so, his caution proved to be in part his political downfall.In Washington there’s a fear of becoming “too liberal for the folks back home.” That’s what happened to the senior Gore. Not only was he seen as a supporter of civil rights as the right-wing backlash personified by George Wallace was taking hold but he also became known as an opponent of the Vietnam War. That was not a good look in the Volunteer State. Some have argued he took this stand because his only son was draft-eligible upon graduating from Harvard in the late 1960s. No matter for what reason he took these positions, they put his reelection in 1970 at risk.To help his father (and possibly also to protect his own future as a potential politician), Al Gore enlisted in the Army that year after some time in graduate school at Vanderbilt, becoming a reporter for his unit. It has been said that the father felt guilty about his son’s sacrifice for the rest of his life. Al’s unit’s scheduled deployment to Vietnam was mysteriously delayed until after the election, a move many suspect was orchestrated by President Richard M. Nixon. Gore did lose his seat that November. In his concession speech, he said that his son was being sent to the war zone just after Christmas, in what would now be his last week in office.When Al Gore entered politics six years later, he picked a good time: Jimmy Carter carried Tennessee in that year’s presidential election by a larger percentage of the vote than any state other than Georgia. The younger Gore won a crowded primary for a seat in the House of Representatives, where he spent four terms. In 1984, he ran for the Senate seat being vacated by Majority Leader Howard Baker. That was not a good year for Democrats: Ronald Reagan, then seeking his second term, was as popular in Tennessee as Carter had been eight years before. Despite that, Gore won with a larger percentage than Reagan carried the state (61% to 58%).As a senator Al Gore carried out a balancing act: while no one’s idea of a conservative, he never forgot the maxim that cost his father his political career. Although he did stand out as one of the first members of Congress who wanted to deal with climate change (and did take an active role in developing the Internet - you can laugh all you want after 18 years but that does not make it a lie), he was thought of as one of the least liberal candidates in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988. As an Ivy Leaguer he was a more polished politician than his father, who remains the most illustrious graduate of my alma mater, Middle Tennessee State University (then a teachers’ college), and the YMCA Nashville Law School. This turned out to be a double-edged sword: Al got onto a national ticket but he often seemed stiffer than Albert, which would cost him dearly in 2000.In his final years Albert Gore campaigned enthusiastically for his son, including both his races for vice president. When he died in 1998, his son began his eulogy by saying, “My father was the best man I ever knew.”
