How do you find out what you want to do for the rest of your life? There are things you can do to help you find an answer, but understand first of all that it may not be one thing. What you want out of life, and what you want to do, may change as you go along and grow older. More importantly, what you find yourself doing may not be what you thought you wanted to do, and that's ok. Life is a journey and you can't see the entire road ahead. And you will change too. Your skills and abilities may grow as you learn, or shrink if you have an accident or develop a health problem. Your interests will almost certainly change over the years. It is not uncommon today for people to make huge life changes and career changes even at 40 or 50 years old.Having said all that. Here are some basic questions to help you think in the right direction:1. What am I good at?2. What do I enjoy doing?3. What can I get paid for?4. What do I feel called to do?If you can find a career that matches all 4 of those questions simultaneously, you have achieved something very rare. I would not count on it. Most people end up doing something that matches at most 2 or maybe 3 of these questions. Some people end up with only 1 question satisfied.There is actually a 5th question some people ask - how can I make a difference? This is a valid question too but probably tied closely to question 4. If you find the answers to the other questions, you are very likely to make a difference in your career. And remember that anyone can make a difference in their world of influence, regardless of your career. That is why I left it out.Still, each of these 4 questions is important. In which order you rank them, is up to you. Some people are prepared to follow question 4, even when some of the first 3 questions are not necessarily satisfied. Others strictly go for the career choice that pays the most (question 3), even if they sacrifice questions 2 and 4.To find the answer to each of these questions, some introspection and honest self-evaluation is needed. But questionnaires and aptitude tests can only reveal so much. Actual life experience is worth far more. To find out what what you are good at and what you enjoy doing, you need to be out there doing stuff. Try many different things. Volunteer at the SPCA. Teach yourself to code and build a website or create an app. Take a summer job or weekend job in sales. Join student societies. Help out with a paint job at a local church or community center. Learn to play an instrument.Keep one thing in mind though. Any new skill set will take time to learn and master. Many very talented, musical people do not play any instrument today because they tried for a month and gave up. Unless you are Mozart, you will not get to sit down at a piano and be able to play right away. It takes hard work and commitment and time (hours and hours). This is true for any pursuit in life - learning a new language, learning how to code, or how to cook, or becoming good at golf, or learning to design and build things. It takes hard work and perseverance and determination to put in the hours.So don't waste your life while you are young, in front of the TV or playing games. Learn as much as you can. Do as much as you can. Try out many different activities. Develop your skills. Ask questions (as you are doing here, good!). Dream big and write down your dreams / options. Plan how you are going to get there.If nothing stands out or grabs you by the heart, decide on something that is within your abilities and see it through. Don't keep second-guessing yourself. Best not to drop out of college or university unless you are 100% certain you made a big mistake and need to change direction. Even then, it might be better to complete your course and change direction after graduating.Lastly, be grateful and grab every opportunity with enthusiasm and appreciation. The majority of people in the world do not get to ask such lofty questions. They are asking what can I do to survive, or how can I escape poverty. They just want to finish school and find a job. Any job. Their options are limited. You are asking this question because your options are many. That is something to be thankful for. If you find something to do, do it with all your heart, to the best of your ability, and with a thankful heart.Good luck and live your life to the full!
