PDF Editor FAQ

Why was the MMA fighter Ronda Rousey unbeatable, and then all of a sudden she couldn't win a fight?

Ronda Rousey came around women’s MMA at exactly the right time for her to be a star. It’s really that simple. Allow me to explain.Ronda had a strong pedigree in Judo. Her mother was a Judo Black Belt who competed and later had Ronda tumbling around on the Judo mats by age 4. This girl lived, breathed and ate Judo. She competed and was a fiercely competitive Judoka.Having such a deep well of knowledge of Judo alone put her in another category over most other women fighters at that time. MMA had just started to take off with women and only a few years prior to her stardom, Dana White had not even allowed women to fight in the octagon. There were some “tough” women in the octagon, don’t get me wrong, but most of them had started off with MMA in mind, which meant they all had done a little boxing, ,a little kick boxing and a little BJJ. Many of the women at that time would walk into an amateur MMA fight with 6 months of not even full time training..get a win or two then get a contract to fight in the big leagues. Most of these females had not really had the test of fighting a world caliber athlete and were beating up what amounted to be some female Tai Bo practitioners.Enter Ronda Rousey who had been throwing and getting thrown around by other world caliber athletes, including men. She was just so much stronger and so much more knowledgeable in the take-down and control game, that nobody could dare stop her. We saw similar stories with the early days of mens MMA. Where you’d have a 30+ year “master” of some strange sounding Ninja art, face a good (not great by good) Collegiate wrestler and the Ninja loses in under a minute. The high caliber wrestler like the high level Judoka that Rousey was, had been used to competing against very powerful and explosive athletes and by the time he fought in a cage, had probably seen and beaten the better share of a couple hundred very powerful and fit opponents - and that’s not including all the wars he faced in the training room on a weekly basis for years . On the other hand, the “Ninja” had been slapping a wooden dummy and swinging a long pole around & never really testing his skill against a formidable opponent.Once women’s MMA really took off, enter other females like Holly Holme who’d done professional kick boxing, professional boxing and even trained wrestling - the kind where she went in and was thrown around and pinned by men and actually went to tournaments to compete. Once she saw that Rousey relied on her go to of a few Judo takedowns/throws she trained to stop that. Once Rousey could no longer throw her opponent down, control them and pound on or choke them she was stuck. She was forced to stand and trade with women who were much better at standing and trading than she was.I’ve noticed on Quora and on other interviews, that people blamed Rousey’s striking coach, but I don’t think it was his fault. I don’t know much about the guy, but he knew enough about boxing to teach her what she needed I can say that. It wasn’t his fault that Rousey’s few go to Judo throws didn’t work on this new batch of women, nor was it his fault that Ronda ignored most of her stand up training until later in her career. Unless you’re just an absolutely exceptional athlete, you’re not going to learn to outbox a pro boxer when you start at 30 and do it for a year or two. Just not going to happen.Ronda had her day in the sun, became real sour when she was no longer on top and is now apparently busy being a mom.

What has your child done that is technically “wrong” but you were proud of them for doing it?

I can think of several examples, but here is one. When Ronda was on the Olympic team each of the athletes was encouraged to blog. She wrote about training and traveling. One day, she learned that one of the referees, his name was Fletcher Thornton, had several affidavits filed against him for molesting and drugging teenage athletes. He did it. How do I know? Because he was doing it when I was a teenager. All the girls called him Fletch the Lech. I once threatened to break his arm if he touched me again. I was 19. Other girls were younger and more vulnerable. So, Ronda wrote about him on her blog. Did I mention that the blogs were being fed to the site of whatever TV station had the contract for the Olympics that year? So, it was probably seen by a million people before they freaked out and took it down. One of those people was a sports reporter for the New York Times , Pete Thamel, who followed up on it. Search “Judo official drugs and molests athletes” in the New York Times for his article. Fletcher was suspended by the US Judo Association and I haven’t seen him around underage athletes since. So, while some people from USA Judo had a fit that Ronda should have been focusing on the Olympics and not getting embroiled in controversy, I was extremely proud of her.

Why is taekwondo more popular than judo or karate? The only martial arts schools around here are for taekwondo.

Taekwondo had a great early start due to the relatively large number of American service members who served in Korea, earned dan ranks in TKD and opened schools when they returned to the U.S. Unlike Okinawa and Japan which have a multitude of martial arts styles, Korea only has three major styles — Tang Soo Do, Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do, with TKD MUCH more popular than the other two — so a service member stationed in Korea was overwhelmingly likely to have studied Tae Kwon Do.The introduction of TKD into the Olympics in 1988 has also contributed massively to the art’s popularity. Unlike judo, also an Olympic sport, TKD can be practiced solo (at times, though sparring partners are needed), is seen by the lay-person as much more dramatic (flashy?) and has a much quicker route of advancement. Also, and, perhaps to its detriment, many Taekwondo studies adopted a business model similar to the Arthur Murray Dance Studios — mass production, long term contracts, standardization, and business considerations dominating. This made it more financially doable to open a TKD dojang than for most other arts. The quick promotions of most TKD schools also feeds into the American pop culture desire for instant gratification. There are NO 6–8 year old black belts in judo, but TKD has thousands of them…Finally, TKD is good for teaching physical coordination, self-discipline, hard work and some self-defence skills (though not known for this aspect compared to many other arts). A person who attends a good TKD school will be in substantially better physical condition, have better balance and poise, etc. after a year of regular study than prior to training. During my years in Tae Kwon Do, I personally saw many borderline disrespectful, undisciplined, out-of-shape kids turned into “yes, sir, yes, ma’am” respectful (at least in the studio), physically coordinated, in-shape children who substantially improved in both their school grades and their social confidence and poise. I also met some very fine people.
