It was the monkey king Sug- reeva, who was accompanied by Hanuman, his trusted aide and other simians. The instant the great apes saw two handsome Kshatriya princess dressed in Vakala and Chara clothes, with a heavy bow in their hands and a quiver full of arrows clinking on their backs, they where worried and anxious , Sugreeva the most of all.Sugreeva observed the duo for a while and said in a banked voice “Those two look like hired soldiers and mercenaries. My brother Valli has not yet forgiven me and is not content with snatching away my crown and driving me away from the kingdom and snatching away my wife, he now wants to snatch away my life too. Accursed by Matangas curse, Balli cannot come to Rushimooka to kill me. He has hired paid mercenaries to do the job. The two young men who radiate boldness and courage look none else like Kshatriya warriors who can be hired to fight ones proxy wars. Oh! I am terribly anxious and vexed”.Sugreeva trusted and hired assistant hanuman pacified his boss. “Oh brave Sugreeva mercenary’s protection exists not only against Valli but his supporters as well. If you remember the exact words of the curse it forbidden Valli and his sup- porters from stepping inside a five yojana perimeter they. If these mercenary sol- diers are Valli’s supporters then they would meet their death the instant they enter the danger zone.If they do enter and remain unharmed then it would mean that they are not connected to Valli and are not his supporters”!865RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashSugreeva was not completely satisfied he said” No Hanuman! I am not con- vinced. A stranger should always be treated as an enemy until he proves that he is a friend. There is no point being complacent and exposing ourselves to risks. I will hide myself in the great cove while you go down and investigate. Wear appropriate disguise and conduct discreet enquires. Hanuman nodded his head and bowed re- spectfully. Valli continued “please remember that a doota or a messenger has a very important role to play. A messenger reflects his master’s intelligence, courage and behavior. You should behave in such a manner that if they are enemies, they should be terrified of our strength and be driven away. They should be given wrong directions so that they can never find us. If they are unconnected to brother Valli, It would be beneficial to have them as my allies and friends. If Valli has not hired them to kill me, then maybe I should hire them to kill Valli”.Hanuman nodded his head and touched Sugreeva feet in respect. He then donned the saffron robe and pasted wavy beard and mustache on his monkey face. He carried a Kamandal of water and a rudraksha beads with him as he started down the Rushimooka hills to meet the warriors and find out if they where friend or foe.443 The origin of the extraordinary apesIt would certainly be surprising to see monkeys speak like humans and discuss intelligent things, but there was a special reason for this. They where not ordinary monkeys, but where extraordinary special creatures, born on Bhrama’s instruction to fulfill a great part of his plan. Bhrama’s plan was to destroy Ravana by Rama’s!866RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashhands. As the divine boon acquired by the ten headed dashanan did not include protection against monkey’s, Bhrama had instructed all the deva’s to descend to the earth and provide their seeds to the monkey’s so that they would beget a progeny as to who would assist Rama during his war with Ravanan. The five monkeys’s who where discussing Rama and Lakshman arrival were a part of monkey’s blessed by Bhrama.Sugreeva was the son of Surya or the sun god, while his elder brother Valli was born from the seed of the king of gods Indra. Indra was the god of cloud and rain. He was also the senior most of the Aditi sons and was also called as Parma- maditya. He had occupied the throne of the Deva king. Nevertheless there had been an intense rivalry between Surya and Indra. When Bhrama instructed the Deva’s to go down to the earth and provide their seeds, a tiff was going on be- tween Surya and Indra.At that time the kingdom of monkeys was ruled by Riksharaja a mighty simi- an. He had two pretty wives and the two Deva’s provided the seed to one wife each. Valli was born to the elder wife while Sugreeva was born to the younger wife. After the birth Surya and Indra went back to the Amravati and Indraloka and con- tinued their fight.Indra boasted that “my son is endowed with the strength of ten elephants and it would be surely him who destroys Ravanan’s lanka and remains a right hand to Mahavishnu when he takes the avatar as Rama”. Surya the sun god retaliated “My son Sugreeva might have the strength of five elephants but he is better en-!867RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashdowed in intellect than your son. It is he who will be Rama’s chief ally in the fight with Ravanan”. The two gods then had an wager as to whose son would turn out more courageous and Valliant in the war. The wager was for a small thing, but both gods took it to their heart and made it a prestige issue. Both started their employ- ing methods to ensure that their son would emerge more Valliant than the other. Indra did this by descending to the earth personally and teaching his son Valli all the skills and tricks of combat and warfare. He wanted his son to be strong enough to single handedly demolish Ravanan.Surya the sun god had his eyes on all the events on the earth and watched In- dra’s efforts with a bemused expression. He had an ace up his sleeve that would ensure that his son Sugreeva would eventually turn out to be Rama’s chief ally and protector. Surya approached Goddess Uma and requested her blessings that Sug- reeva would be the one to ally with Rama. Shiva’s wife blessed him appropriately and it was a blessing that Valli and Ravanan became friends by swearing an oath before fire god. Eventually Rama killed Valli to help Sugreeva to get back his lost kingdom. In turn Sugreeva helped Rama in tracing out Seeta’s whereabouts and helped in the combat against Ravanan in which the ten headed Asura king lost his life. No wonder the monkeys on top of the Rushimooka hills talked so intelligently.!868RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakash444 Indra and SuryaLater when Indra came to know about Surya’s visit to goddess Uma and the blessing granted by her, distraught and upset that he had lost the wager. He went to Kailasha and fell at Uma’s feet.“Oh goddess Parvathi! Oh virtuous daughter of Himavon! Oh deserving wife of Parmeshwar! Oh goodness ambika, Mahakali and Sathi in Reincarnation! As Deva’s we are equal to you. The eleven Adityas should be exactly the same to you, then how could you give a boon to Surya’s son that he would be better than my son? I want you to correct this imbalance. Please produce appropriate changes in your cosmic plans so that Valli and Ravanan become enemies. Also ensure that it is Valli and not Sugreeva who becomes Rama’s friend, well wisher, supporter and ally”.Goddess Parvathi bestowed Indra a benevolent smile and said “Cosmic events are complex and should not be meddled with frequently. A small change at one end produces a ripple effect which may produce undesirable conclusions and unwanted results. I did it for Surya’s sake because he pleaded desperately. Destiny once written cannot be changed. Oh! Indra please don’t behave like a stubborn child and asking for impossible gift”. Indra was a persuasive god and fell at Uma’s feet. He refused to let go till she did something. Parvathi then said” let things re- main the way they are during this Yuga the next Yuga is Dwapard Yuga where in which Rama will incarnate once again as Krishna. At that time once again you and Surya will be called to provide the seed and give life to mighty sons. What you have!869RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashlost in Treta you will regain in Dwapara. Your son will be the chief ally and Disci- ple of Narayana while Surya’s son will be in the enemy camp. The great fight will begin between the two teams in which your son will emerge victorious after defeat- ing Surya’s son. This is the best I can do. Indra was still not satisfied; he made one final request “Oh! Mother Parvathi please ensure that my son Valli does not loose his life in Sugreeva hands, just change that little bit of the destiny so that even if my bold and valiant son Valli has to die, he does so in the hands of Narayana”Parvathi blessed Indra appropriately and subsequent events happened exactly as per Maheshwari’s plan. In Trda Yuga, sun’s son Sugreeva allied with Rama while Indra’s son Valli was the enemy. In Dwapara Yuga, Indra son was Arjuna who al- lied himself with lord Krishna who was the avatar of Lord Vishnu. Surya’s son was the Valliant Karna who fought from the side of Kauravas who where the enemies to the Pandavas. Exactly as per Uma Devi’s promise Arjuna killed Karna thereby ensuring that his father scored a point over rival Surya in the celestial court.Likewise Hanuman too behaved so intelligently and wisely because he was the son of Pavan Deva or wind god, Hanuman was a unusual monkey with awesome talent. It was he who bought the news that Seeta was alive. It was he who burned the golden city of Lanka. It was he who helped Rama to build a bridge across the mighty ocean. It was he who plucked a whole mountain for Lakshmanan’s sake. And it was he who assumed a gigantic shape to jump across the mighty oceans in a single leap445 Apsara Anjana!870RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashAnjana was a celestial Apsara in Bhrama’s court. He was completely proud of her good looks because she was a pretty maiden. Once she went down to the earth with her other Apsara friends for a picnic. There she got separated from her friends and was wandering alone in the jungle, when she saw a strange spectacle which made her break into a loud laughter. It was a monkey sitting in a lotus posi- tion performing a deep penance.Sounds of Anjana’s laughter disturbed the monkey’s concentration, who opened his eyes in anger and instantly transformed into a rishi. It was no ordinary monkey but a sage who could take up any form he desired. At that time he was performing his penance in the form of a monkey. He was annoyed by Anjana and hurled the curse,“ Oh! Pretty women you are too proud of your beautiful face and pride has made you arrogant. I hereby curse you that you will turn into a monkey the instant you fall in love”. Anjana was shocked, but before she could apologize and ask the rishi to take back the curse, he transformed himself into a sparrow and flew away. Poor Anjana was aghast and ran to Bhrama. Falling at his feet she apologized and begged for redemption. Bhrama explained though he was the creator he could not completely annul the curse given by a virtuous and noble sage. All he could do was modify it.He said “Anjana I will use the sage’s own words to modify your curse so that you could be relieved of your ordeal soon. As the sage cursed you will transform into a monkey as soon as you fall in love that instant. However you will have to!871RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashremain a monkey only for three earth years after which you will fall out of love. The instant this happens you will regain your Apsara form. Three earth years is a very short time by celestial standards and you can soon be back in this court.Anjana shed tears of relief as she thanked Bhrama for his benevolence and kindness. Bhrama then added,“Daughter Anjana! I will send you back to the earth. However you’re “falling in love” and “falling out of love” will not happen till you remember the curse and its associated events. Thus this time you will loose your memory and forget that you are an Apsara. The instant you fall out of love you will regain your memory and your earlier form. Go in peace and return in three years, though in Bhramlok only a few microseconds would have elapsed”.When Anjana woke up in the forest she had no memory of her earlier life. The jungle was abundant and it was a happy period frolicking as a carefree maiden with no worries in her mind. Only if you had memory you will have worries. Even in her transformation into a human, her face remained extremely pretty. Her nature did not change and Anjana was really proud of her looks.One day when she was plucking flowers in the jungle she heard a lion roars and fierce growls. She approached closer and saw a handsome prince fighting with a ferocious lion. The moment she saw the handsome young man she fell in love and instantly transformed into a monkey.446 Many events in many places!872RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashOne minute she was a extremely pretty girl hiding behind a tree watching with great interest a fight in which a ferocious lion was being wrestled by a handsome man. The next instance she feels an abrupt transformation in her body. The grow- ing body hair, the shorting of height, long tail and puffiness of the cheek altered her looks. She looked into a puddle of rain water and broke out into a loud shriek. She had been transformed into a monkey.She could not control her shock and collapsed on the ground with a shriek. She then started sobbing uncontrollably. Parts of her forgotten memory started trickling into her head. She had been transformed into a monkey because she had fallen in love. She continued to cry uncontrollably she heard footsteps and felt someone touch her shoulder. On opening her eyes she saw she was facing a hand- some monkey. He introduced himself as Kesari the king of monkeys who had been endowed with powers of transformation. It was he who was fighting with the lion in the form of a prince. H too was impressed with Anjana and expressed his desire to make her as his wife. Anjana was happy that even in her curse she had found such a handsome husband. She agreed to Kesari and lived happily as his wife. Most of Anjana’s memory was still missing and she spent a happy and peace- ful time as Kesari’s wife. In the mean time lot of things where happening in the celestial place.It was at this time that the four headed Bhrama had called for a meeting of all the deva’s to go down to the earth and give their seeds to all the female monkeys. It was at this time that Shiva and Parvathi where discussing about Vishnu’s various!873RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashincarnation and the guise of Ram avatar. At the same time in the kingdom of Ayo- dhya, sage Rushyasringa yagya to ensure that emperor Dasharath gets a progeny. At the end of the prayers, the yagya pourusha appeared from the blazing flames with a bowl full of divine Prasad, the consumption of which will make the queens pregnant.Shiva on mount Kailasha addressed Parvathi “Oh beloved Uma! During each Kalpa, Vishnu’s avatar as Rama is gaining increased glory. All this while, I have heard Rama’s experience second hand. I am suddenly seized by the desire to expe- rience Rama’s life first hand and have a closer look at his adventures and his life. Goddess Parvathi was a little puzzled “Oh! Lord and master what is your idea? Do you also want to start the reincarnation business? Is it your plan to descend to the earth in another form and spend a few years there. If you are planning any such hare brained scheme, please abandon if forth while. You have a lot of work to do and can hardly afford to be away from your seat”“No Parvathi! I don’t plan to anything so complex. As you know I am special because I am unborn and not created. Thus I am the only complete being in the whole universe. Being like this every cell in my body is complete in itself. Each cell in my body shares a collective consensus with others. I will thus enjoy the first hand experience of Rama’s adventures without moving an inch from Kailasha. Don’t worry I will not leave you even for an instance”447 THE KITE STOLE IT!874RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashGoddess Parvathi face bore puzzled looks as she could not clearly understand Shiva’s complex words. The three eyed destroyer offered additional explanation. “Oh! Beloved even if I send a small part of my body down to the earth and ensure that the same remains close to Rama, I will be able to gain first hand experience of the life and adventures of Rama.As he was talking he wiped his brow and a droplet of his sweat fell down which traveled straight down to the earth. Shiva continued his explanation to Par- vathi “At this moment in Ayodhya the gurus have concluded that the Pulraprati yugya and the divine Vagyapurusha is about to emerge with a special payasam. My sweat will fall straight into the bowl and would reach queen Kaushalya’s lips when the king offers the first helping. From Kaushalya, my formless cellular identity would travel to the fetus of Rama. There after a part of my collective consensus will always remain with Rama and take part in all his adventures”.Parvathi gave a smile and said” Oh beloved master! In that case I insist that you share your experience with me. Tell me in detail without omitting anything, what ever you perceive as a part of Rama”. Lord Shiva agreed and looked down .The sweet droplet reached down to the earth at the precise time when the divine youth emerged with the bowlful of the special pudding. And then there was a cosmic accident over which even Shiva did not have control. A huge bird swooped down from the tree even as sage Rushyasringa handed over the bowl to Dasharatra. It pecked down, gulped a beak full of the payasam and flew away.!875RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashShiva was disturbed and quickly summoned wind god. Pavan at that time was on his way to kwhkinda to locate an appropriate female monkey to provide his seed. He diverted his journey halfway and answered Shiva’s summon. Shiva said “Oh! Pavan the portion of the special payasam containing my amsha has been tak- en by a kite bird that is rapidly flying in the south direction. Chase the bird and block him then extract the payasam from his beak you have to then take it back to Ayodhya. Wait for an appropriate time when queen Kaushalya is eating. Drop the payasam into her food. Follow the instructions precisely and report to me when you have completed it”. Vayu nodded and zoomed back to the earth. By then the bird had flown to far south. Pavan set out in a hot chase and blocked the bird’s path. The bird was caught in a dust cloud and it had to open its beak to cough. The droplet of Shiva’s amsha was skillfully caught by Vayu. He was about to turn and return back to Ayodhya when his gaze suddenly went down and saw a beauti- ful female monkey plucking flowers in the forest. “Let me first finish Brahma’s work first. I will give my seed to this monkey and then be on my way to Ayodhya to complete Shiva’s task. Pavan decided this and slowly descended to the grounds He wore a special locket around his neck which had a small compartment. Into this, He safely locked the divine payasam enriched with Shiva’s amsha. Transform- ing himself as a handsome prince he appeared before Anjana448 Pavan and AnjanaThe instant Anjana saw a handsome young man in front of her she felt a cu- rious sensation in front of her. The person in front of her appeared to be like a!876RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashDeva and was dressed in unusual clothes. His muscles rippled and his face glowed with a Tejas that was simply not comparable. The wind god was in a terrible hurry and came straight to the point.“Oh! Pretty monkey maiden I am Vayu, the god of wind. I am here due to the Bhrama’s order who has instructed me to provide my seed to a female monkey through whom a virtuous son would be born who would assist Rama during his incarnation as a human. I request you to join with me in Gandharva vivah and al- low me to impregnate you with my seed which will beget you a son who will make your name immortal”“Oh wicked and immoral man don’t you see that I am married? How can you make such a vile suggestion to someone else’s wife? You call yourself a Deva! How could you suggest such an act which is clearly wrong”? These where the words An- jana should have spoken, but did not. Seeing handsome pavanan had not only pro- duced strange feelings in her heart but had also made some of her memory come back. As she slowly fell in love with Pavanan, she started falling “out of love” with Kesari and her memories slowly started returning. In the mean while Pavanan was in a great hurry so he said again “Oh pretty monkey maiden please consider my request and give me an appropriate answer either way. I have no intension of mak- ing you scared. If my offer of a Gandharva marriage does not appeal to you, then please say so without embarrassment and I will find another mate. I don’t have much time so please make your decision fast”. Anjana fluttered her eye lashes and gave him a acknowledging smile. Wordlessly her face, eyes and body language con-!877RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashveyed her assent. She then rushed into the outstretched arms of pavanan. Their love making was intense and passionate. Even as the marriage reached its climax, Anjana had completely fallen out of love with her husband Kesari. Bhrama’s bless- ing took effect and gradually felt memories flooding into her mind. At the same time, she also felt the changes in her body as her hairy monkey limbs changed into those of a beautiful Apsara. After their love making, Pavanan fell into an exhausted sleep as Anjana lay beside him and admired him. As Anjana stroked Pavanan she accidentally brushed the neckline with the special pendant which sprang open when the button was pressed. The divine fragrance bewitched her and Anjana could not control herself. The next instance the droplet was in her mouth and then in her stomach.The Valliant son of Anjana was Anjaneya who was later named as Hanuman. He was born with a part of Shiva in his body and thus inherited a lot of qualities and characters of Shiva. Hanuman was bold, brave and mighty simian who was a ordent follower of Rama and is an important character of Ramayana. It was this Hanuman who was sent by the monkey king Sugreeva to meet Rama and Laksh- man to find out the true reason for their visit.449 Red fruits are ripe and sweetPavanan the wind god was aghast when he woke up. Anjana’s consumption of the divine payasam had upset all his plans. However what had been done could not be undone. And so he decided to go back to Shiva, to tell him what had hap- pened and apologize and accept what ever punishment he gave him. He bid!878RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashFarewell to Anjana and returned back to heaven. By now Anjana had recollected all her memory about the past. She had also transformed into a Devi Apsara. Once she had regained her celestial status earth no longer held any attraction to her now. She became anxious to return to Bhramlok. Being a Devi, she did not have to go through the ordeal of suffering the nine months to give birth to a child. As the child was conceived to a monkey she gave birth to a simian who was named Anjali Putra, Anjaneya, and Son of told h and Anjali. She carried her son back to Kesari and told him the whole story. He was shocked and saddened, but he was consoled by the baby who touches his heart and promised Anjana that Anjaneya would be looked after well without any comforts denied. As Anjana was ready to go to Bhramlok Anjaneya clutched her silk robe and begged her not to go. Such was Hanumans development that he could speak correctly even as he was just born.“Oh mother if you abandon me like this, who will look after me? Who will feed me when I am hungry? What will I eat? Anjana patted her son and said “Oh pretty one worry not your father Kesari will look after all your needs and will not deny any of your needs. In addition your biological father Vayu is in the poles he will keep an benevolent eye on you and ensure that all your comforts and needs are look after. In addition just follow a simple rule regarding fruits which would be your diet as a child. Fruits that are red or orange or yellow are ripe and sweet. They are perfectly fit for eating. Fruits that are green are unripe and will give you a stom- ach ache so avoid them”.!879RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashAnjaneya bid a tearful farewell to his mother who departed to heaven. He was well looked by his father Kesari’s well as his biological father Vayu. As he was born with a part of Shiva with him, Anjaneya was a person with unique qualities which he started exhibiting right from his childhood. Once the palace maiden where buay and did not have time to feed him. Hanuman grew terribly hungry and crawled out to search for something to eat. He looked around and found nothing appropriate to eat. At that time he got up and saw the sun shining brightly. Seeing the red or- ange and yellow color he was reminded of his mother’s words. Yellow –red are ripe fruits and fit for eating. He reached out with his tiny hands to pluck the sun. When he could not reach it he started flapping his limbs.And then Shiva’s magic happened. Anjaneya body started growing gradually and soon he had assumed gigantic proportions. He then took a leap and started flying towards the sun, his lips dribbling saliva as he imagined the delicious crunchy fruit hanging in the air.450 Swallowing the sunIt was a bad day for Surya or sun god because it was one of “those days”. The day on which he was destined to be a meal for the celestial serpent Rahu and spent a six hours in the snake’s belly. In the past Indra had promised the two celes- tial Serpents Rahu and Ketu that they would make a temporary meal of the moon and the sun. After retaining them in the belly for a specific time they would have to regurgitate the sun and the moon. On the earth such a phenomenon is called as an ellipse. Surya was depressed that it was a solar ellipse time. Soon the immense!880RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashblack serpent will make its appearance and swallow him. The prospect of spending six and a half an hour in the snakes belly sent shudders into his heart. Then saw Rahu coming from the south.Surya was a little surprised. The usually black Rahu appeared brown. Then he got a second shock as he saw a black form appearing from the north and this he recognized as the serpent Rahu. The brown form rushing towards him with open arms was none other than Hanuman! Both Rahu and Hanuman reached Surya at the same time. Rahu got scared of the gigantic figure of Hanuman and rushed back to Indra. “Oh devaraja you had given me the sun and the moon to eat at ap- propriate times but now some other Rahu has appeared and is about to swallow the sun. How can you do such an injustice to me? Indra was perplexed he had not given anyone else permission to eat Surya and Chandra. Mounting his massive huge elephant and set out on the sky route to investigate the matter. On reaching the sun he was surprised to see a gigantic monkey attempting to grab the sun and swallowing it. Though the monkey bore a gigantic form his face was baby like. In- dra approached close and asked the little fellow to go back and not to play with things which would harm him. However Hanuman was too small to understand and was extremely hungry. He did not bother about Indra and stretched out his hand to grab the sun. Surya shivered in fear. Indra was very angry. He pulled out his Vajrayudha and shot a bolt of lighting that hit Hanuman on his left chin and killed him in the spot.!881RAMAYANA By Dr L.PrakashHanuman suddenly shrank to a little monkey and fell down to the earth. Rahu happily got back to gobbling the sun while Indra went back to Devalok. However Hanuman’s death was perceived by wind god who rushed down to the body. The instant he confirmed his sons death, Vayu became very angry. He suddenly stopped flowing. Soon the three worlds started choking and panic spread rapidly in all directions.Bhrama accompanied by a group of Deva’s quickly came down to the earth and stood in front of Vayu. Bhrama himself pacified Vayu but the wind god re- fused to budge unless his son was restored back to life.In addition I want all the deva’s to bless my son and grant him a special boon. Only then will I start flowing again. Pavan was firm in his decision. Bhrama finally agreed and restored Hanuman back to life. And then the various Deva’s gave the appropriate blessings.451 Forgetting his Strength and powersIndra’s blow had hit Anjaneya on his chin which was swollen. Hanu in San- skrit means chin. Indra blessed him that “as your chin is swollen due to my blow, you would therefore be called Hanuman. You would also be blessed with long life and immense strength”. Varana blessed him “you will never fear water, however big the river or however mighty the ocean you will not be scared. You will be able to swim against the rough currents. When you really desire you can even jump across from one bank to another. Sun god Surya blessed him with one hundredth!882RAMAYANA By Dr L.Prakashof his illumination and special knowledge of divine arms. In the similar way Bhrama, kuber and others blessed him.Being the son of wind or maruthi, hanuman was also called as maruthi. His other names were Vayu Putra, Pavanputhra, Hanuman, Anayajan and Kesarinan- dan. After granting him the appropriate blessing the Deva’s returned to heaven. Over a period of time, Hanuman grew up as a naughty and frivolous youth. His pranks and practical jokes also increased. As he was endowed with immense strength, his simple prank would occasionally result in a disaster. Once he jumped into an ashram while the Rishi where doing penance. He playfully uprooted the immense tree and threw them in all directions. He assumed a gigantic form and his foot steps almost produced an earthquake. Sage Matangas was performing his prayers when Hanuman uprooted the tree and demolished it. Considerably angry the sage uttered a curse. Matangas was about to do so, when by his divine powers, that he came to understand that hanuman contained a part of Shiva and was on this earth to fulfill a specific purpose. He thus uttered the appropriate curse. “Oh Hanuman you don’t need your special talents now and hence will completely forget about them. Many years from now you will come in contact with Rama and to as- sist him, you will need all your talents then. At that time someone will praise you and will remind you of your talents. At that time only you will get back your pow- er, courage, and valor. He lived in the monkey kingdom of Kwhkinda and was a close friend of king Riksharaja two sons Valli and Sugreeva. After Riksharaja death, Valli ascended to the throne and Sug- reeva was his close aide. Later however the relationship between the two brothers soured. Those who where inseparable became enemies. In the fight between Valli and Sugreeva, the younger brother was dethroned and banished to the jungle. As Hanuman was more loyal to Sugreeva, he had accompanied his mentor to the for- est. Hanuman was a part of the four other monkeys who had accompanied Sug- reeva, those where the five monkeys whom Seeta had see from the Pushpakavi- mana. And now on seeing Rama, Sugreeva suspected that he was enemy. Hanuman was the doota or messenger sent to investigate the matter.452. A Sweet voiced intelligent messengerRama was distraught on seeing the wondrous spectacles around the pumpa lake, all of which remained him about vaidehi. Your mighty chests are like Meru mountains while your arms are thick and long like an elephant tusk. Looking at your faces it appears that you are sun and moon descended to earth. Your mighty bones bear are strange markings and are made of unusual material which I have hitherto not seen .In addition your quivers are immense and bear an unusual assortment of arrows . I have never seen such mighty and unusual arrows. Please tell me who you are and why you are here . My father is wind god and am also called as maruthi , Pavanaputhra or Vayuputhra . iam a trusted assistant , efficient valuable acolyte and a obedient slave to my master Sugreeva on whose behalf I welcome you to my kingdom . I have some vague idea about your wife and her kidnapping , but it would be unbecoming of me as a simple messenger to speak of important things with you , before you have met my master . He told Lakshmana “Even if the climb is difficult and the route treacherous , we shall correct direct directions and start immediately “With a smile Hanuman said “ oh Princes this is nothing to worry I will insure you that you don’t have strain your legs “The next moment Hanuman buffed up his chest and started expanding his boby . Soon he had assumed a gigantic form . He instructed Rama and Lakshmana to hop on his either shoulder . In long hops and brijic steps he started towards the mountain . Hanuman moved so quickly that before sunset they were at the moun- tain top plateau beside the perennial water hole and the cave with a huge boulder its mouth.Hanuman plucked two sandalwood branches which he lay on the ground for the two brothers to sit. He then went inside the cave to summon Sugreeva . The monkey king was really blessed to know that the visitors were allies and not foes.
