Many 4-year liberal arts colleges expect their professors to have active research careers, though not as extensive as those required by Ph.D granting research institutions.If you plan to be a researchers, there are fewer schools available to you, and the challenges of finding a position there are great. You must present a very strong research profile from the very beginning. Many Ph.D. graduates who aspire to these jobs already have peer-reviewed publications before they graduate, and have well-established research profiles.Even at research institutions, however, you need to show your teaching skills. They are a part of virtually every university job. Our graduate students all serve as teaching assistants during their training. As they become ABD they may have the opportunity to teach their own classes. These teaching experiences are invaluable. We encourage students to compile a “teaching portfolio” with syllabi from the courses they have taught, teaching evaluations, and examples of exercises, laboratory sessions and discussion topics. These portfolios are important in the job seeking process. We also encourage students to attend “teaching clinics” offered by our university. Teaching is an art that must be learned. I want to second Scott Fahlman’s excellent answer, and add a few observations.First, in applying for a faculty position, a Ph.D. student or recent graduate must pay close attention to the job description for the position. These job descriptions are carefully crafted and in most cases must be vetted by a Dean or higher authority. They are very specific about a lot of things, including the rank of the person being hired, and their research specialty. There is simply no point in applying for a position that has nothing to do with your current research specialization. That said, the cover letter is all important. It must clearly show why the applicant fits the job description and why he or she wants to join the faculty at the institution to which they are applying. An applicant must understand that this is a job application, and the same requirements are here as for a job in industry. A generic application letter that does not address the institution or the faculty will not get attention.Second, the applicant’s research must be engaging and interesting. If the Ph.D. training has been effective, the applicant will have research that addresses major problems in his or her field and is going to be of serious interest to the faculty.Third, teaching experience is important for a faculty position. We advise our graduate students to start developing a teaching portfolio as soon as they begin as teaching assistants. Eventually we try to make it possible for graduate students to teach their own courses. The portfolio involves syllabi, sample lectures or power points and teaching evaluations.Finally, if a candidate is invited for a campus visit, this means they are suitable to be hired. The campus visit is entirely to determine which of a group of finalists is going to be the best fit for the campus and for colleagues. It is a very demanding event, usually spanning two days, in which the candidate meets with everyone—faculty, students, and administrators. Of extreme importance is the “job talk.” This must be a lecture that appeals to both undergraduates, graduate students and faculty. And the talk must tell this audience something new and exciting based on their own research. This is a very difficult task, and candidates who are wise will practice their talk before they go for the campus visit. Most departments will arrange a time for a candidate to practice on their peers, who almost always give good advice. The question and answer period after the talk is as important as the talk itself. It can last as long. The faculty will be carefully noting how the candidate handles him or herself with these questions. Being poised, pleasant and prepared is essential.Aside from the talk the candidate must be prepared. He or she must be familiar with the faculty members and their research and be able to talk with them about it. They want a colleague who will be able to work with them in their research and who will be pleasant to have around. It is a bit like courting for a marriage, or an academic version of The Bachelor. During the campus visit, the candidate must be unfailingly pleasant, interested, engaged and if possible, humorous and modest. The faculty are all feel they are very accomplished, and they will not hire someone who shows them the slightest disrespect or contempt.So, basically, 1) prepare well in advance. 2) apply for an appropriate job, 3) do your homework about the institution and the faculty. 4) prepare a great job talk if you are invited to campus. 4) be unfailingly enthusiastic, engaged and interested in all you meet during a campus visit.In the end, these jobs are increasingly scarce. A Ph.D. student may have to go through many campus visits before getting hired. If you are a finalist for one or more jobs, be very encouraged, because it means your credentials are strong enough to be hired. After that there is a certain amount of luck. If the right job comes open at the right time, if you do your homework and prepare, if you are able to be the one finalist for the job who stands out and is well liked by the faculty you will have success.One final note. You may be the second or even third choice for a job. First choice candidates don’t always work out for a variety of reasons, most of them personal. If you are the obvious second or even third choice, be gracious and grateful for the offer. It is no reflection on you that you came up second. All finalists for a job are acceptable, and even if you are the second or even third choice, rest assured, the faculty want you to join them. The worst thing in Department is to have a failed search, because the search process itself takes nearly a year, and is a major effort for the Department. They truly want to hire good people.
