PDF Editor FAQ

Since the US came into existence in 1776, & Before 1789 there wasn't a president - What was the structure of the government? Who led it?

Before 1776 we had 13 colonies ruled by crown-appointed colonial governors, aided by a legislative assembly, often bicameral, and a system of colonial courts. Within the colonies there were towns, and towns had their own governments in the form of a town council/board of selectmen/board of alderman, or in some cases a “town meeting” where the residents of the town served the legislative function directly.Aside from some defensive military coordination — against threats from the French and the Indians — there was almost no formal inter-colony coordination. For example, if there was a border dispute between two colonies, and this happened frequently, there was no body in American competent to resolve the question. It had to be referred back to England.Declaring independence in 1776 (or in 1775 in the case of New Hampshire) the colonies became independent states. The crown-appointed governors became elected governors. The states adopted their own constitutions. But the form and function of state and local government changed very little. Ditto for inter-state coordination. It was still focused on military coordination, via the Continental Congress for the duration of the War, followed by the Articles of Confederation. But all the other governmental functions were state and local.

Has any one of you encountered any paranormal/supernatural activity or seen someone being possessed?

I've never seen/witnessed a possession, but I've had many encounters with ghosts and a couple of nasty entities. Some of my favorite encounters are with some ghosts who reside at my local American Legion building. At the time I encountered them, I was a member of our towns Arts Council Board of Directors. We rented the second floor of the building from the Legionaires. We had three ghosts there, one was a former Legion Commander, one was a rather shy lady and my favorite was an old fella named Ezra. Ezra is a prankster, but never anything harmful. Mostly moving things around. I always felt him, and could only see him in my peripheral vision, but he was delightful. I never could figure out why he and the lady were there. It was obvious why the commander was there. In that same space, I, along with my puppet troupe (7 other people), had to deal with a rather angry female ghost. She threw my laptop off a table onto the floor, about 3 feet from the table. Thankfully it was in its padded case. We had just finished rehearsing for a show, and since I was House Manager, I kept our space cleaned....so I was cleaning one of the bathrooms. I had a tub of Clorox wipes sitting on the toilet seat lid and it suddenly flew past me...between me and the sink, and out the door. I lit into this female spirit for being so ugly, then with the help of Ezra and the Commander, banished her from the premises. When I was about 19-20, my husband's (ex husband now) grandmother was murdered. After her burial, she came to me and tried to tell me who killed her. For some reason, I couldn't hear her, and to this day, 40+ years later, her murder is still unsolved. For a short time, I did graveyard shift security work at an ice rink complex. It had 2 rinks. I worked alone. Each rink had an upstairs seating balcony....a main staircase served both sides. I was sitting in the lobby playing solitaire between rounds, when I saw someone out of the corner of my right eye....to my right, standing beside the stairs, looking out the front doors. I turned to look, and saw a Native America wearing 60s-70s type attire....brown corduroy pants, cream colored shirt and tan/camel colored vest. His hair was just below his collar. As soon as he noticed me, he vanished. Never saw him again. These are a few of my own encounters. There's more than these.

What are the best student organizations to join at NC State? Why should students join them?

I’d recommend Honor Societies and Academic Fraternities. Be sure the ones that you join are legitimate as you’ll receive a lot of spam emails about “Honor societies” that are nothing more than a resume filler, with little to no real benefits.State has a lot of fraternities and sororities as well as intramural sports and athletic organizations. NC State also offers a variety of cultural organizations. The Union Activities Board, Student Government and Inter-Residence Council also provide students a lot of great leadership opportunities and have paid positions if that’s an interest.Honestly, NC State has over 800 student clubs and organizations; there’s bound to be something of interest for everyone and if not, there’s always the opportunity to found an organization.
