I’ve stopped using LGBT+ altogether and replaced it with the word “queer.”It’s so much easier and so much less exclusive.LGBT+ always came with the issue of “but what about me?” Even with the plus, it seemed unfair that some of us got top billing and the rest were relegated to the plus sign.Adding more letters was never a functional solution. As more sexual orientations and gender identities were named and recognized, more and more letters were getting dumped on the back end. Really, what we needed was a word to encapsulate everyone who isn’t straight and/or cis.For me, queer does the job.I know lots of people have lots of different feelings about the word, so if someone told me they didn’t like hearing it or having it used to refer to them, I’d refrain from doing so.But in general?I think it’s a good choice. I know for myself and quite a few younger queer folks, it was never used as a slur towards us so it really doesn’t carry the emotion. No one my age has, so far, expressed discomfort to me over it. It’s a good catch-all.I also totally respect it as a separate identity label, for those who use it that way. No reason why it can’t do double-duty!

I like it as a catch-all term that trips off the tongue easier than ‘LGBTQAI+’.‘Queer’, to me, can encompass all those things and more, without being cumbersome. It also allows anyone to say ‘‘I am part of this community”, without necessarily going into detail about which of the many letters they fall under.I also stand by the reclamation of hurtful words - a word has the power you give it. No one can use queer to hurt me.I embrace it wholeheartedly- I am queer in every sense!That said, it has been used to hurt people, so I wouldn’t really use it to describe anyone in particular, unless I knew they were comfortable with it.
