How do I start preparing for IES?

There are many ways/strategies to prepare for IES(ECE). You can find many toppers strategies in the website https://ieshelpline.wordpress.com/I am sharing my complete strategy. I can assure you 6 month of serious & smart study is good enough to clear IES.My answer is going to be a bit longer, but I am sure it is very useful.Let me confess that my result (AIR-5) is way more than my work/time/energy spent in preparation. I am working in NTPC ltd (6 working days per week/no weekend)& I am a fitness freak too(usually spend more than a one/two hr everyday in physical activity), bottom line is “the time available for me was very scarce”. No need to say that I have availed any coaching neither joined any test series. The only external help I got is free interview guidance from ACE Engg Academy(bcaz it was for free) & experience/guidance shared in IES helpline website (https://ieshelpline.wordpress.com/)and IES made easy classroom notes. I don’t have any friend to discuss any topics or clarification of doubt (which I really missed).PLANNING: "Give me six hours to chop down atree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." - Abraham LincolnMake a concrete plan. Spend at least two weeks analyzing previous years question papers, type of question being asked, hotspots, syllabus, cutoff marks in all stages & others parameters. You have to be aware of how much to score to get a rank & how to score that in the worst case scenario. Ask many successful people& use their guidance & experiences. Infact I have spent almost a month in this satge. My target is to score 700 minimum (at any cost & worstcase scenario). Here was my breakup ofmarks.GAT paper-100Objective I-140 (min100 qsn attempt out of 120 & 88 qsn correct & 12 qsn wrong to score 140)Objective II-140Interview-120 (I hadconfidence that I will obtain 120 in interview even if it goes wrong)Totaling of four: 500So even if I wil get 100(very easy to score) in each conventionalI will get 700. Any additional mark will boost my score & rank. I knew thatI have to get 750 to get branch of my choice (top rankers) & the only thing to reach 750 is to score min 125 in each Conv (which is not easy but not tough either).I started preparing from the Month of February (with a proper plan & determination to execute it). My time linewas from Februay 1st to 10th June 15 (for the record ESE Examwas on 12th June).February: read thoroughly once all subjects of Paper-I & make short notes of each subject (so that u can quickly revise when U need to)To cover one Subject thoroughly, U can choose whatever u r comfortableor u like or u think it is best for u. Trust me Good books are the best.In my case, for Network Theory I followed my own ACE classroom notes (for GATE) & book by D. Roy Chaudhury only to cover network synthesis & graph theory which are not covered in ACE note.ForDevice Physics, I went through Neaman book only. For Material Science, selected portion from SP Seth. For measurement &Instrumentation, ACE Note (thanks to my friend Rajkiran for that note)& selected portion from A K Sawhney. For EMT, Sadiku book is the best. Signal &system by Oppenheim. One thing I will strongly recommended is to solve Objective Qsn at the End of each chapter in Sadiku & A K Sawhney book.PS-Don’t get lost in books (don’t fall in love with it). Focus on your goal/objective & Don’t follow more than one book per subject (as I hv said Time is scarce &precious).March: read thoroughly all Subjects of Paper-II & take short notes(But I could not cover Microwave properly &didn’t even touch Computer technology )Analog Electronics from Sedra & Smith,Digital electronics from Morrios Mano,Microprocessor 8085 form Gaonkar,Communication from “An introduction to analog and digital communication by Simon Haykins”.For Control System I used my prv ACE Note& book by Nagrath & M. Gopal. For Mircowave Samuel Liao.I will share two secrets of success here. (very very useful)1. The syllabus of Paper-II subjects are sort of not limited & too wide. How much you read it is not enough. And Good news is that not only the syllabi of Paper-I subjects are limited but also they are relatively easy & highly scoring. I have seen people who have already scored more than 150 in Conventional of Paper-I.2. There is one book named “Electronic Communication System by Kennedy”. It contains Analog, Digital ,optical fiber, satellite communication, radar, Tx-line,waveguide & microwave devices too. The best part is in ESE exam many question come directly (as it is) from the set of questions given at the end of each chapter in that book.April: Prv year OBJ Qsn Practice (this is the most important part in the preparation)Manypeople follow IES Made easy book (that contains prv yr qsn Subject wise & Year wise) for this. But that is the least effective way & I am not going to tell why. What I did follows next.Take printout of Prv years IES QSn Paper (as it is, from UPSC Website & Internet) & what I meant is real Qsn paper used in Exam.Take print out of 120 qsn OMR Sheet (U can find easily in Internet). Set Timer for 2hr. Now let the game begin. (It’s Real Exam Environment, Isn’t it?).Now 2 hr is over. Now the real exercise starts. You have to check 120 qsn by yourselves. You will ended up with 3 types,1. Qsn that u have done correctly ( thanks to yourselves & be happy)2. Qsn u have attempted & not correct ( U have to look immediately that portion form book/ note whatever, make a short note of that area on that qsn paper itself)3. Qsn u have skipped (not attempted) : Action is similar to Part 2Bottom line is, its no more 120 qsns for you but now you are looking at 120 concepts. So for me, one paper took 2 hr for exam & 4-5hrs for evaluation part. So I ended up in completing hardly one paper per day. Initially I was getting 110 marks only, but later I was scoring more than 140 marks. The moment I touched 150 marks, I knew that I am going to crack ESE this year.I solved last 10 year qsn of both Paper-I & paper-II in the way described above.May: Revision, GS& ConventionalIt’s time to revisionyour short notes that u have made & anything u have missed in Feb &March.GAT Paper:General English: I didn’t prepare English at all (due to timeconstraint) & that was a terrible mistake. I don’t have any idea how toprepare English but what I know is English is damn easy & scoring. If u get120/130 in GAT paper, your life will be much easier & ur chance of becoming Topper will be very high. Put some effort in English too.General Studies: Myperformance is not bad in this section & managed to score 100 inGAT. I did prepare selectively.History:only Modern India History from NCERT bookGeography:NCERT Book class-IX & X (really awesome), study with Map/AtlasLifeScience: NCERT booksPolity:Selected portion from book by M LaxmikanthEnvironmentaltopics, Climate change & Biodiversity, UNs etc: From different WebsitesPS: Many recommend me to go through IES made easy GS book. But I find that book really boring & too much of information to digest. I did it in my own way & it worked out pretty well.Bolte hai na “General Studies to pura Samunder jaisa hi hai, jal wahan fekna jahan machhli ho”-Conventional: I didn’t practiced conventional questions atall, that does not mean I was not prepared. As far as conventional is concerned, what I did was, just had a look at IES made easy conventional book to know what type of questions are being asked & from which area and to figure out those hot spots. Prepare those hot spots well. But I knew that I have to focus in Conv Paper-I to get a good score & I did fairly well. Some important points that helped me a lot in Conventional1. Try to maximize as much as u can in Paper-I.(prepare Paper-I thoroughly)2. You have to write very precisely & to thepoint, otherwise 3hrs won’t be enough.3. Make good diagrams whenever needed. (no need ofusing color pens)4. Write first two questions (out of five) very well, it will lead a good impression for the examiner.I strongly recommend practicing at least one conventional paper of each in real time environment so that you will come to know what can go wrong in the exam.I must say in between this month you revise those short notes that you have made earlier. Give exam for objective papers as in real time exam environment with same time as in real IES exam (9-11 am Obj Paper-I& 2-4pm Obj Paper-II on same day). It will definitely help u a lot.JUNE: (Last 10 days): only revisionI have made short notes such that I can revise entire syllabus within two days. Revise ur GK.Few things I want to say “Quantity does not matter, its always Quality”. How many hours you are studying is irrelevant, how effectively u r studying is important.Believe in yourselves. There may be thousands or lakhs of students preparing for it. People are taking coaching, studying for years (full time, without doing any job). Yah its true, but its also true that people are cracking it in first attempt. Be the champion of your own heart. Many says time available to me is not enough or its too late for this year etc. Trust me, sincere studies of 5-6 month are good enough. IES is not tough, what really tough is sticking to your plan and executing it.

Why do Asian Americans have the highest household income in America?

There are several reason why as a demographic it appears that Asian Americans tend to have higher household incomes. Clearly, its not a homogeneous observation, meaning there are bell curve distribution in any population of people. There are some AAs that are not successful as well. We’re not Borgs. Here is what I can state from my personal experience which as I grew up differentiated my upbringing and family life from that of my non-AA friends.Family values: Growing up we were quite a conservative. Its not a religious thing, its a mindset. I wasn’t raised as a Christian, and my upbringing in a buddhist family had nothing to do with our values. With that being said, my parents and grandparents consistently taught us about morals and values. It was always emphasized as critically important. We were cautioned about being embroiled in scandalous behavior. Family was the center, we spent a lot of time together rather than separated into distinct spheres. This meant no TV in our bedrooms, no computers in our bedrooms, it was a place for rest and sleep. We watched TV together, we travelled together, we ate together. Of course we had varying opinions but we discussed things in a group. We sought out the advice of our parents. There weren’t many secrets in our family.Drive/Motivation: We were driven to succeed. Sure no kid is perfect, and I doubted I would ever be an ace student, among the top 1% of the entire student body, but it was still a goal nonetheless. There were no excuses, not rationalization, just the encouragement that it was possible. Children by default (bar exceptionally gifted kids) are lazy. They will choose the easy way. They will eat dessert before veggies. There I said it. There is excellence in all things. We could be excellent artists, or athletes or chess players. Be excellent. So why be excellent ? Well, it was logical. Excellence leads to success. Success leads to financial independence. Financial security means greater choices and options. Its ironic, my non-AA friends talked a lot about their freedom, their parents let them run wild. It was liberating for them. But it is also limiting in the long run. Your freedom to do as you please is curtailed by the necessity of earning a living to support yourself and your own family. More money means more options. We were taught this wasn’t a matter of conjecture, it was practical, cold logic.Discipline: This was a major difference I noted growing up. My non-AA friends experienced very little discipline at home. To be fair, not all of my non-AA friends were completely undisciplined, just the majority. None of them ever were spanked or seriously disciplined. It was more like a casual slap on the wrist type consequences that didn’t amount to much. I learned quickly not to step out of line. There was swift and immediate discipline. It wasn’t enjoyable, but its not meant to be. Consider the Marines. What happens to new recruits in year one ? Just Google the videos and you’ll see that discipline is absolutely required. I’ve heard from many unsuccessful friends both AA and non-AA say that they wish their parents were more strict with them growing up. Now that they’ve learned a lot of things the hard way, they cannot roll back time and do things differently. All children need guidance and discipline. Its easy to see an AA parent be strict with their child and judge them as undesirable, backwards parents. But the proof is in the pudding. Discipline matters. Spanking is not required, but some strict and consistent form of consequence based discipline is key. Life requires long term planning and diligent parenting.Respect: This is another big difference I saw with my non-AA friends. Some of the were downright disrespectful towards their parents. It was shocking. Some of things they said, I would never even think of actually saying to my parents. Is this how it was with my non-AA friends ? I was incredulous. Look if your child doesn’t respect you, your rules mean nothing. Your consequences become a joke. Without authority and respect, you have failed as a parent. Period. Its slippery slope. This is why my parents encouraged, expected and demanded respect. I toed the line. It has paid off. I am highly regarded at work for not only my work ethic but also for the fact that I am very respectful and easy to work with. Being respectful and nice really matters.Honor: Losing face was a bid deal in my family. We were not to do anything that may cause us to lose face, feel shame. We were each representatives of our family. Just like a citizen is a representative of their country. Look, people don’t like Trump. Trump is our CIC and like him or not, he is a representative of our country. And people from various parts of the world, including our own country do not like him. He has had multiple marriages, he has been accused of shady business dealings, and called very unpresidential. So honor is a big deal. So maintaining your honor and good reputation is quite valuable. Need I say more ?Merit: What are you worth ? How do you contribute to your family unit ? How do you contribute to your school ? How do you contribute to your country ? How do you contribute to mankind ? These are all important questions to ask one’s self. In order to love and respect others, one must first love and respect one’s self. How do you gain merit ? Well, actions speak louder than words. When people talk behind your back, and say nasty untruthful things about you, does it bother you ? It bothers me. But only for a moment, because people see what I do. They see how I treat others, and how others eventually treat me. Be nice to everyone, whether its a waitress at a local restaurant, or some celebrity you happen to bump into on the street. Character counts, I know it sounds cliche but its true. Be someone that is easy to admire and respect. Be a contributor to your community, school, workplace. Don’t just be a consumer. When you look back on the year, what you have accomplished ? Are you a better version of yourself compared to the you of last year ? Self evaluate. Criticize yourself and find opportunities to improve. My parents were encouraging, but critical, and it is through their eyes that I gauge my personal progress throughout life.Just remember. If you’re a non-AA, you can still use AA techniques to raise your children. But retain some of the creativity, freedom and fearlessness that I have seen in so many successful, creative, and entrepreneurial non-AAs of the world. AA’s are not perfect. My parents were not perfect. But as a parent, I’ve taken what I valued in my upbringing and currently apply it with some modifications of my own with my own children. Money is not everything, it is just another way to create more options and opportunities in life. Isn’t that what we all want anyway ?Jesus saves.

What are some productive study tips to study effeciently for JEE?

This year, more than 1.7 lakh students have appeared for the grand IIT JEE examination. If you’re aiming for the best of IITs such as IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi or IIT-Kanpur – you must be in the top four thousand rankers to secure a seat.On the other hand, you’d require a much-improved rank so as to land a branch of your choice. There a lot of other IITs and NITs that are good options, but those too require a lot of efforts to crack. With the stakes so high, naturally, this is a competition that gives you nightmares. But it is during times like these when it’s crucial to maintain your composure and keep up with your preparations. Here are a couple of tips that will boost your learning curve:1) DisciplineWhile it is easy to whine about the massive syllabus- remember, success comes to those who discipline themselves. Fix a routine that suits your grasping abilities, and stick to it. If time management is the car to success, discipline is the fuel that operates it and it is your responsibility to ensure that you incorporate both of them into your life.2) Sleeping HoursMany IIT-JEE aspirants for some reasons believe that it is smart to compromise on their sleep and use those “extra” hours to study some more. Your brain deserves a good seven hours sleep after a whole day of learning new concepts and practising the old ones. By not doing so, you’re exposing yourself to high levels of stress that will eventually damage your brain cells.3) Self-evaluationThis is the most crucial practice of all, where you analyze your curriculum, study patterns, and results. This will help you evaluate your understandings of the current topics and help figure out the problem areas that need improvements.4) MentorsBased on your self-evaluation, it will be easy for you to figure out the lengths to which you require to be mentored for the exam, and seek guidance accordingly. For most of you, online platforms such as Learnpedia would help your self-studies significantly, with or without the other classroom training that you wish to take up.5) Planning and StrategizingThe most effective way to carry out your preparations for IIT-JEE is to build a plan based on self-evaluation, and stick to it. You need to be constantly strategizing and upscaling your plans to accommodate any form of hindrances to your study schedule- for instance, falling sick. If you plan efficiently, taking such risks into consideration, you can avoid falling behind your peers.6) Healthy LifestyleSleep isn’t the only fuel that your body needs to stay energized, you must also follow a healthy lifestyle- feeding on nourishing food, staying well hydrated, and taking regular short breaks. It is nice to walk a little and talk to the people around you so as to refresh yourself from a heavy dose of studies.7) Notes DirectoryPreparing for an exam that quizzes you on two years’ worth of studies, makes it difficult to keep a track on your learning, unless and until you don’t make neat notes that come handy during revisions. Losing a single one of your notebooks is adverse. Thus, maintain a directory that helps you track your notes better.8) Online Study MaterialWebsites such as Learnpedia have online/offline study material, along with a platform to discuss your doubts with the experts and fellow IIT JEE aspirants. These online lessons use images and videos that help you grasp the concepts faster that retain them for much longer.9) Healthy CompetitionAs far as it is healthy, competing with your peers is a great way of motivating yourself to work harder and achieve better results. But as soon as this competition starts inducing negative feelings towards your peers, cut it out – as it could cause more harm than good.10) Mock TestsMake sure that you start simulating your exam at least once a week- a month in advance of your exam. Replicate factors such as your seating arrangement, time slot, duration of the mock, etc. This will train your body to stay focused during those hours and boost your concentration span exponentially.Note: I have originally written this article here

I absolutely love how easy it is to pull a document and fill in information or sign and send back out. This is super simple for the constant paperwork I must complete.
