I find that people sometimes lose sight of this, so I’m first going to state the obvious: the United States is very large geographically. New York City is further away from Phoenix than Barcelona is from Moscow. It’s a big country.Anyway, I’ll answer this in reverse order (all data from The COVID Tracking Project)Is the increase in cases due to testing?Well, here are the key metrics for the country since April 1Now, it is definitely true that the number of daily tests has gone up. But, if that is causing the current uptick in cases (starting in mid-June), we would need to explain why the number of daily reported cases was going down at the same time the number of tests was going up from May through mid-June. We would also then need some explanation for why the hospitalizations jumped up around the same time the number of cases jumped up.The simplest and most likely explanation is that the daily reported cases and the number of hospitalizations are going up because the number of actual cases are going up, so unless you are able to explain the inconsistencies you should assume that is the case.Is there a second wave?Going back to what I said before, the United States is really big. Just as trends can be different in Sweden and Italy, they can be different in Arizona and New York. And if we look at the regional data, we see something interesting:In the aggregate number I first presented, it looks like there is a drop in daily cases nationally. But that’s not really true. There was a sharp decline in cases in the Northeast region (specifically the Tristate area around NYC), and a slow increase in daily cases everywhere else. The New York numbers were so drastic that they masked the trends elsewhere.As a side note, we can also see that the daily tests in the Northeast have doubled since their daily case decline began, which again makes it seem like there is not a causal relationship there.There isn’t a second wave. There was a bit of a plateau during the lockdowns, but there was never really a decline outside of the area that was initially hit the hardest. The United States is having a couple of different regional outbreaks, and what has currently happened is that the South and West regions, which had managed to barely keep a lid on things after the warning they got from NYC, took the lid off in June and are now feeling the consequences.The upshot of all of this is that this recent surge was totally predictable and that public health interventions by state and local governments appear to have a reliable and significant impact on COVID-19 transmission.Wear a mask and stop going to bars, you heathens.

I currently lease an Audi A4. My last two cars before this one were Honda Accords. For me the best reason to get an Audi A4 vs an Accord Touring is the driving experience. The engine and transmission are much more refined. Throttle response is immediate. The car doesn’t throw you into the door when you go fast around a corner. The suspension soaks up bumps and potholes much better. Wind and tire noise is barely audible, even at highway speeds.Additionally AWD is not available on the Honda Accord. Most cars from luxury makers provide AWD as an option. In the Northeast it is hard to find an Audi, Mercedes or BMW on a dealer lot that isn’t equipped with AWD. Getting a Honda Accord out of a snow covered driveway requires a lot of shoveling. Getting the Audi out only requires putting the car into drive. I have driven the car thru a foot of snow without even the slightest hint of tire spin.

Prior to this, only 5 of the 20 districts or Arunachal Pradesh had transmission network. This project will expand to cover all of Arunachal.Approval of “North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP)” for strengthening of the Intra-State Transmission and Distribution System at an estimated cost of Rs.5,111.33 Cr. The project is planned to be completed in 48 months. This is in-line with the poll promise of 365 days of power in the region.To boost organic farming in the region, announced setting up of six new agriculture colleges in the region, with the aim of making the region “the capital of organic farming”.A minister from the Central government has been regularly visiting the region. In fact, in early January, it was decided that at least one Union minister will visit the region (including Sikkim) every fortnight. Chemical Minister Ananth Kumar has been given the responsibility to coordinate and to ensure the regular visit of ministers.Approval for the setting up of Food Processing Units in NE region at a cost of Rs 16,840 Cr. This project is to improve the shelf life of horticulture products from the region.Approval of construction of Airport hangars in the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI), Guwahati. This is envisaged to meet the Airport’s increased demands of growing air traffic in the region.At the risk of angering his vote base, PM Modi had implicitly endorsed the UPA decision of redrawing the India-Bangladesh border. Though the final act needs to play out here, it is now his responsibility to take this to ratification.Central Govt. has announced setting up of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Assam.Central Govt. has announced setting up of an Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Nagaland.Central Govt. has announced setting up of a Center for Film Production, Animation and Gaming in Arunachal Pradesh.Central Govt. launched Make in North East programme to boost employment and development in the region.
