They just introduced this new software to manage the entire amount of photocopiers. No one knew how to use it, I was the youngest, I was supposed to handle it. My immediate superior (the boss’s wife) didn’t know how to handle it but wouldn’t admit that she needed help.One night after I went home, she decided she wanted to have a look at my work of the day. I still don’t know what she didn’t like or wasn’t satisfied with, but ultimately she decided to change several things in the clients profiles. She created a huge mess. That’s how I got in trouble for something I clearly had nothing to do with.

Learn everything you can.My first job at about 19 was at a reprographics company. I ran copies all day on a huge copier about ten feet long by four feet wide. To make double-sided copies I had to pull the stack out after one side had been copies and reinsert them back in upside and backward. It was the dinosaur age of copiers.Anyway, I learned that the more tasks I learned to do the more skills I had to offer them as an employee, and it added to my resume for whenever I eventually left the company.I listened and paid attention, never turning down an opportunity to learn a new skill. When I was slammed with jobs to do, I would talk to the accounts receivable person about the companies requesting the jobs, the largest, most reliable accounts would have their jobs completed first and one-offs would be done later.By being eager to learn anything and everything they would teach me, I showed I wanted to be a valuable and versatile employee. I did that at every job I ever had.By absorbing as much as I could, I ended up getting the accounts receivable job when that person left and then trained the new copy person to replace me.
