When I was in the US Attorney’s Office, I got a call from Army counsel that the police in a Northeast Pennsylvania town had stopped and seized a military tractor trailer hauling an M1 Abrams tank. My first response was “WTF?”The tank was being transported from a facility in NJ to a base in PA and the cop stopped it for exceeding the weight limits allowed on a bridge over the Delaware River. The police cited the driver for exceeding the weight restriction without having a permit issued by the Department of Transportation, and impounded the truck and tank. The army counsel had no luck getting the police to release either so they contacted our office to represent the driver in court on the citation and to litigate getting the vehicles back.I figured there was no way the state had the authority to enforce a rule of the road against the Army, just as the state has no authority to insist that Post Office vehicles have license plates. So I called the Department of Transportation’s chief counsel, figuring they’d intervene quickly. I was wrong. They insisted they had the right to enforce the permit requirement and impound the tank until the citation was resolved. No amount of screaming on my part made them budge and I ended the conversation telling them they better have the keys to the truck and my freaking tank back to the Army within the hour.I should have done some research before I popped off. Turns out, there was an Army regulation requiring vehicles to obey local traffic laws, including weight restrictions, and authorizing states to enforce their laws against personnel who violated them. The regulation contained exceptions for emergency situations and national security but for the most part, gave the local cop the right to stop the truck and cite the driver. You learn something every dayWe ended up in court but worked out an agreement with the Department of Transportation and the local police to have the vehicles released with a promise that the government would pay the fine. The driver pleaded guilty to the citation and the US Treasury coughed up the fine and costs.

Goals are the core to successful motivation. I spend the most time with my coaching clients helping them set their goals. But for motivation to be successful, goals need to be specific. They also need be:- Specific – “I want to be rich” is not specific. I want to make $5 million is specific. I want to make $5 million in the next 5 years is very specific- Difficult but attainable – None of the greatest human goals have been easy. We seem to be hard wired to rise to a challenge. Studies have shown that people are more successful attaining difficult goals than easy ones.- Accepted – this applies to goal setting for others. You really cant set a goal than isn’t accepted by your staff, your partner or your family.- Feedback and evaluation is critical to goal success. It must be provided when goal is achieved. Rewards help. Whether it’s a financial reward (bonus), or a personal reward (I will take that vacation to New York once I lose 50 pounds).Some things can help improve the chance of a goal being achieved.- Goals are more effective when used to evaluate performance. Well done Sally, you’ve achieved all the goals on your Performance Plan, so I will give you a raise!- Deadlines improve goal achievement.- Learning goals leads to higher achievement than performance goals. If you have to learn something new in order to achieve the goal you have a greater probability of success.- Accountability can help. This is easier in the workplace where your boss holds you accountable. How do you hold yourself accountable? Tell someone. Your partner, a parent, a trusted friend. If your goal is to run a marathon, join a community of runners. Post on one of the many exercise apps.One of the most famous goals of the 20th century, landing a man on the moon, was…difficult. And specific. It educated us, and it included a deadline. In a speech at Rice University in 1962 President John F. Kennedy famously said “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win”.Humans landed on the moon 7 years later. That goal was accomplished, and so much more..Personal goals should align with your personal values and strengths. I have had many young clients say “I don’t know what I want to do with my life”. After exploring their values and their strengths, they often become VERY focused and ready to tackle the most amazing goals.If you are interested in understanding your strengths a bit better, one of the things I like to do with clients is to have them complete the VIA Character Strengths survey offered through the University of Pennsylvania.
