I ran through fire with a wet bedsheet held up like a screen protecting my family from the burning embers.It was 1 AM at night and my wife smelled something burning. We live on the 15th floor of a 20 floor building and nobody had tested the fire alarm in years. I opened the door and was immediately enveloped in thick black smoke and could hear the POP POP POP of the electric bulbs exploding. The apartment next to us was on fire!I tried calling the guard on the ground floor but nobody was picking up the phone. I had a decision to make - do I stay at home with my wife and 3 year old son or try to make it down 15 floors of a burning building with zero visibility. I didn't know how widespread the fire was at this time so I assumed the worst. I also didn't know if I should try to go to the ground floor or carry on to the roof.Finally I decided that I can't sit around and end up getting trapped. So I covered my wife and son with a couple of wet bedsheets, took a wet one for myself and opened the door.I was immediately struck by the MASSIVE heat and dark thick smoke which started choking us. Since there is a lot of wind on the 15th floor, it was pushing the fire, smoke and big burning embers directly into our path.I picked up my car keys, wallet and the house keys and told my wife to run for the stairs while carrying my kid. I held aloft my sheet in front of the fire to give them some semblance of visibility when they were running. Still, that 5 meter run was like a descent into hell. Once they made it into the stairwell, I followed.I met some guy on the 14th floor landing who was trying to get to the fire extinguisher. I asked him if the fire is above us or below but he didn't have any answer. Finally, taking a guess I started running down the stairs as fast as we could.To this day I don't know how we managed to come down about 15 flights of stairs in 10 secs flat. All I know is that for about a week afterwards, both me and my wife couldn't walk properly because our legs were swollen.We finally had the fire brigade come and extinguish the fire just before it could get into our apartment. Our front door was all warped and blackened but our belongings were safe.Even now when I tell people about this, nobody is able to believe the sheer terror of that 5 meter run.Even now, even a whiff of something burning puts us on edge. Panic is never far from the human brain isn't it?DJ

About 20 years ago I went to visit an OB/GYN. I had been in that office before, but I had never seen him.I went back to the exam room and was given blood pressure and temperature test by the nurse. Then I was handed a piece of paper about the size of a washcloth, and another one about the size of a hand towel. I was told would undress and you sees small pieces of paper to cover myself.I undressed, and sat down on the examining table. It was chilly in the room and I got rather cold as I sat there for 45 minutes. Finally, I got tired of waiting and dressed myself. I walked out of the room and told his nurse that I had no more time to wait, and that I was leaving.I was extremely upset and I sent a letter to the doctor. I actually wrote a letter, put it in envelope, stamped it and mailed it to his office. I told him how upset I had been left, sitting basically naked for so long. No one had bothered to check on me during that time. His office apologized and asked me to come in again.So, like a fool, I went back. Again, a nurse saw me to the room. She handed me the two tiny, flimsy pieces of paper and asked me to change. I told her that I wanted to talk to the doctor while I was fully dressed and after that I would change. So the doctor came in and met with me for about five minutes. He left so I could undress and use that flimsy paper.But I was wiser this time. I bought a sheet to cover myself and I used that. The doctor came in and apologized and told me that he had been talking to his pastor. I told him that if he had been talking to his pastor, Jesus should have spoken to him and said, “I see everything. Please go and see that patient so that she can and dress herself. It isn’t a lovely sight “he was offended. I didn’t really give a damn. He finished his exam and I never saw him it yet. Thank goodness.

Currently (as of January 21, 2018), a “Forever” stamp is worth 50¢; it covers 1st class postage up to 1 ounce for envelopes up to a certain size (see USPS website for exact dimensions) AND as long as such envelope is NOT “stiff” (ie: it has to be easily bendable over a sharp edge, such as a counter; if it doesn’t pass that test, it needs 21¢ additional postage for being “non-machinable”), AND also the envelope can not be over 1/4″ thick!
