Why didn’t the Sean Connery/Alec Baldwin Cold War adventure film, The Hunt for Red October, set off a movie franchise?It did. Red October was the first film based on the Tom Clancy espionage hero, Jack Ryan, and it became a successful film and TV franchise.I’ve read a number of answers, both here on Quora and on other sites, that suggest Red October only loosely or “kind of” kicked off the Clancy-novels-based movies spearheaded by Jack Ryan, but that’s not at all accurate.The Jack Ryan films are not “loosely” related. They are all direct sequels and re-imaginations of the character named Jack Ryan from The Hunt for Red October.It’s just that The-Powers-That-Be in Hollywood had a little problem with marketing when one star was replaced by another way back in 1992.The reason a lot of people don’t think of the Jack Ryan films as a cohesive franchise, like we do the James Bond, or Jason Bourne, or even Rocky and Rambo franchises, is because of Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford.Now, Red October was headlined with Sean Connery; he was the *big draw* of the film, and rightly so. He was long-established as a Hollywood icon and no one knew who the hell Alec Baldwin was yet anyway. Baldwin was just another young, hot-shot rising star in Tinseltown when he played the part of Jack Ryan in Red October.But, the film was a blockbuster, and the story did revolve around Jack Ryan; Baldwin spent about twice as much time onscreen as Connery, and he was great as the goody-two-shoes CIA analyst who was in over his head; it only made sense that Baldwin would make his mark as Jack Ryan, the way Connery, had made his name as the original James Bond three decades earlier.So, it was a bit of a surprise to a lot of people (including the first Jack Ryan, I think) when Baldwin didn’t reprise his role in the next film, Patriot Games. At the time, the story Hollywood put out was that Baldwin got greedy and held out for more money than he deserved, as if he was demanding Connery-type money, when he had only been what amounts to part of the supporting cast.In the thirty years since then, Baldwin has countered that story with a version which paints a dark, though completely commonplace, portrait of the industry, wherein Baldwin has accused Harrison Ford of throwing his own star-power around Hollywood, pulling the rug out from underneath Baldwin to obtain the role of Jack Ryan in the following two films.The truth is almost surely somewhere in between — and probably closer to Baldwin’s version, if we think about it — but one of the things the producers did when they cut Baldwin loose is, they marketed to the press that Patriot Games was a “reset” of Clancy’s Jack Ryan. (They weren’t using the term *reboot* back then. That’s an Information Age term born during the Internet Boom of the late 1990’s.)They did this to protect themselves and the films from possible public backlash, and it worked — everyone viewed Baldwin as the bad guy, and everyone has always loved Harrison Ford, anyway, so the public accepted this explanation that the Jack Ryan film series had suffered a little hiccup, but don’t worry, folks — thank goodness! — Harrison Ford has agreed to ride in and save the day!But, the fact of the matter is, after the initial success of The Hunt for Red October, there was always going to be another film with Jack Ryan as the hero. I mean, the film made $200 million on a $30 million budget. Really, does anyone think The-Powers-That-Be sat around sucking their thumbs after the success of Red October, thinking to themselves, “Gee, I wonder if we should try to make another one of these?”We can split hairs and say none of the stories are directly related, that they are each standalone films in different historical eras, or pretend they aren’t all descended from the previous ones, but there has been one driving force behind the character of Jack Ryan all theses years — Mace Neufeld has been a producer on each film, including the ones that starred Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and, now, John Krasinski in the newest Jack Ryan series on Amazon Prime. That’s as *film franchise* as it gets, folks.And, it all kicked off with the submarine film that was the late Cold War Era blockbuster, The Hunt for Red October back in 1990.

No one gives a shit.These IoT devices turned out to be a hunting ground for Hackers. No firewall rules, uPnP and hard-coded passwords could easily be exploited.The companies who develop these devices don’t care about updates. Hackers could easily exploit these vulnerabilities if they are not patched.Some of these devices are embedded with mechanisms to send data back to organizations. This is unethical as well as creepy, you don’t want business to gather data about your speech or your heart rate, do you?And oh, if you bought a device for turning your curtain off using an app while sitting 10m away from it, forget about making sure you update the device or click ‘OK’ on software updates ~ Lazy Users. Obvious, isn’t it?OK, BUT YOU SAID THESE DEVICES CAN BRING DOWN THE INTERNET?As crazy as it sounds, yeaap.On 21 October, 2016, these innocent devices together were made brought down the Internet for nearly a day in the US.Hackers targetted these IoT devices and came up with a botnet (a network of bots which is under the control of their master). After the botnet was created, they launched a DDOS attack towards Dyn, a company which provides major DNS (Domain Name System) services.Okay, I used a lot of terminologies in the previous paragraph.DNSIf you’re unsure of what DNS is, in simple words, it is a mapping between the IP address and the Domain Name of websites. For example, if you typed in “Google.com” in you web browser, the browser would talk to a DNS server to figure out what the IP address of Google. DNS is a large topic for this discussion. But, basically, your laptop would talk to DNS servers before connecting to any website you wish to connect to.It is like you looking for a friend called “Joe”, but you do not know his phone number so you lookup the phone directory.DDOSA DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) is basically a bunch of computers trying to make connections to a server. In this case the botnet kept trying to connect to the DNS servers. It’s basically like a bunch of kids in a car asking their parents “ARE WE THERE YET? every second for a couple hours.MIRAI IoT BOTNETThis attack was caused by Mirai Botnet. These regions shown above were not able to be on the internet because their browsers simply wouldn’t be able to resolve the names to IP addresses.In an interview with CNBC, DYN said that the attacks were “well planned and executed, coming from tens of millions IP addresses at same time.”Now you see how brutal this can be?This got worse when the source code was posted on GitHub. Which means anyone can look the source code up and figure out the vulnerabilities that were exploited. On a positive note, it also makes White Hats aware of vulnerabilities and spread awareness.This is an ongoing discussion. Security is a major concern regarding IoT. Please buy IoT devices only after researching it’s security features. Best? do not buy them until there is a steady solution.
