An “Officer” was responsible for issue of DDs and her maker was another “Officer”.A Major customer who was on verge of default came in and asked to issue a DD for Rs. 8 Lakhs.The Lady processed his DD and issued him a DD for Rs. 8 Crore (Back then DDs were hand written) in zeroes and wrote Eight Hundred Lakhs only.She filled the ledger with Rs. 8 followed by 7 ZeroesBest part is her checker - approved the DD without a second glance.The DD came for clearing and shocked the service branch officer who collapsed. The DD was for 8 Crore and the Total Branch account was barely Rs. 1.5 Crores.Promptly the legal people were called and being in HO - i travelled to Lucknow until which time they delayed the issue by “misplacing the register”Now one look at the DD and i knew - legally we were bound to pay. Yet since the Debit ledger would only have Rs. 8 Lakhs - i thought we could get away with it.We filed a case with the cops and the court but this Guy promised them a cut of his Rs. 8 Crores and they slowed things down.When i asked the lady - why she wrote 8 Crores - her explanation was what stumped me - She said - she did not know how to write in english numerals or english words so SHE ACTUALLY ASKED THE CUSTOMER TO TELL HER WHAT TO WRITE.The Checker who did not glance at the DD or would have spotted the mistake was then told to write - 8 Crore on a piece of paper and he filled 9 zeroes.Allahabad High Court finally came in our favor by saying that the Debit Ledger said 8 Lakh and the Customers average balance never went for more than Rs. 10,50,000/- - so they issued a writ and instructed us to return the DD to the RBI and issue a fresh DD to the customer with interest applicable.A few days later -Staff were told - IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT - PLEASE WRITE IN HINDI ALSO.We also distributed a Sheet of Paper - with number of zeroes in Lakhs, Crores etc like school kids.And this woman was an OfficerI have no idea what became of her but going by our history - she may have retired as Chairman or ED.
