Generally, every child inherits his/her father's family name at birth, and is considered to be a part of the family of the father. In my community in Kerala (India), children used to inherit the family name of the mother and is considered to be a part of the mother's family bloodline. It still is that way.Children used to have no rights on the father's property. The property of men would be inherited by his sisters' children.Upon death of any member of the father's family, the children had no obligation to observe the customary 16 day period of mourning. This was however strictly applicable if the deceased was a member of the mother's family.Women owned the major chunk of the family property including the family home, family jewels and family heirlooms. Each daughter and each of her children and grandchildren inherited one share each. Each male member got one share (which would later be inherited by his nephews & nieces)Women stayed in their maternal homes even after marriage. The husbands could come and visit and leave. Or… they could move to the wife's house and stay there permanently. There was no question of the woman moving to the husband's house.One of the first feminist societies of the world, I guess.Now it feels like somebody put a mirror in front of those customs. 😒

In other words someone is committing fraud. But they want a scholarship because the business is not really theirs? Why not try honesty and put the business in the right name?

Do not, under any circumstances, ask your father to write you a recommendation letter for graduate school.If your father wrote the letter and revealed your relationship, the letter would be thrown out immediately, because of the obvious and unavoidable conflict of interest. Graduate applications typically require a certain number of recommendation letters; tossing your dad’s letter might put you below that threshold, which means you effectively never applied at all. That’s the best case scenario. More likely, the admissions committee would still review your application, but would write you off as either unethical, deeply uninformed, or simply not accomplished enough to get three letters without conflicts.If your father wrote the letter without revealing your relationship, and the relationship was later discovered, there’s a good chance that your admission would be revoked for fraud. Both your father and their department chair/dean would likely get an angry phone call from the department chair of the master’s program. Other recommendation letters from your father, and other applications from his/your university, would all be called into question.If your father has any sense, he’d answer your request with “What?! What are you thinking? Of course not!” Better not to put in him in that uncomfortable position in the first place.
