If I raise my children in the US and won't teach them Tagalog, will part of the Filipino culture die?

The answer is YES, not just the culture that dies, you would lost most opportunities of being bilingual. Let me cite few advantages of being bilingual in the US, specifically in California. In school setting: California State University and University of California are federal and state funded schools. They valued diversity and the linguistic skill of their student. On their application form (on-line), they really asked different dialect an applicant could speak. They have listed few major Filipino dialects listed on their drop-down menu. Among the dialects they listed are; Tagalog, Cebuano, Waray, and Ilocano (I forgot the rest). When you are bilingual and apply to this prestigious California Universities, chances of being accepted is very high, and not to mention all the scholarship being offered in school. In workplace: If you offer services, being bilingual is smart because every now and then, you could encounter people of different ethnicities who spoke their own languages. If you knew how to speak one, then the person will have more confident in you since you have something in common, “English as a second language”.Daily life: To be with family, hanging out with peers, or simply having a good time at a tourist areas in the US, most people speaks different languages. It is just so good if you speak your own language aside from being “English”.US history was so brutal. To mention one was the “boarding school”. Presently, the US government really striving to met equality and a better opportunity for all, and that includes catering all the citizens who speaks different languages in school and at work, plus you get paid more if you are bilingual.Although dialect is not the only basis for Filipino culture to die out if you don’t speak it, it’s very essential to teach our children at least one Filipino trait that could possibly help him/her for his/her own identity.I speak three dialects from the Philippines (cebuano, tagalog, waray)makes me a polyglot in American setting. Everywhere I go to apply a job in California, I sure get the spot, and thanks to my parents who did their job for making me awesome.

Are convicts still punished after serving their time?

I got out in 1995, during the Great California Lockup, where a spectacularly high number of people were being sentenced to prison, often but certainly not always on arbitrary grounds (they’re some good books describing the bizarre historical period when the USA had the highest lockup rate in the world, worse than any dictatorial regime).I had been in Silicon Valley high tech and was extremely nervous about being accepted back in that fold. Instead, during my first interview when honesty forced me to blurt out I was a felon, a very unconcerned HR manager simply responded, “Not a problem, if you find it doesn’t interfere with your work!” Mellow! So it went with a succession of high-paying jobs until I finally semi-retired. It was only when I applied for a job in Florida that I experienced rejection on the basis of my criminal record. I love Florida, but, yes, that’s a VERY Florida thing to happen.Since background checks only extend typically back seven years, I eventually omitted any mention of my incarceration because I was tired of hearing,”You claim on your resume you’re a felon, but we find no history of this!”Things have changed. Despite very significant - and still ongoing - reforms in criminal justice that has resulted in a huge reduction in the absurdly high prison population rate domestically, background checks and job application forms have become extremely invasive and require far more information that was required previously. I think this raises the bar higher for people with recent crimes, but by now my personal failing is far behind me.
