What are your views on the SRS (student reaction survey) in Thapar University?
Problem! Something is seriously wrong with how its being implemented! I fail to see any effect in teaching methodologies. If we dig deeper what i have realized is1. SRS is just a data collection application. But that is exactly where the problem lies. Data is not being transformed into information and to make changes you need to deal with information and graphs not data!2. The questions in the SRS sound so lame. The questions demand answers on a scale of 1–5. On a personal note teaching is an emotion and being taught is an equivalent feeling. So i find it utmost important that they tap the student sentiment while they make us fill the form.3. Frequency! Twice in six months! when you want improvement you have to be regular. and consistent Students here take it as a burden to fill SRS, YES! we do because we find no difference. Promise us there will be impact and make that impact significant visible. Rest assured we are sure to come down and fill it weekly if required. Feedback has to be real-time!I know it is really easy to point fingers and complain. But i have to give certain credit to CSED department of Thapar they have clearly realized the ineffectiveness of this system and asked students to develop applications such that the feedback can be real time. They did this is the form of a hackthon. They were two team which i believe had the potential to implement with in the university. I wont name the team or team members but the idea i would love to explain…As mentioned that the SRS has failed to tap sentiment and emotion of the students. The teams have come up with Natural Language Powered sections where students are asked to type what they understand and any other feedback they were willing to give. Based on the text written by the students an emotional factor is calculated and once the net emotional factor drops below a certain level the teacher is forced to go through the feedback and amend accordingly. Hope such system will come into implementation and significant improvements are made by the teacher.
