When I didn’t allow a student to turn in random anime drawings for extra credit in my science class, the parent told me, “You are a racist AND have violated my adopted daughter’s civil rights.” She then immediately reported me to my principal and superintendent.The backstory: I always give opportunities for extra credit, but I ask the student to come up with the idea and then “pitch” it to me first, as well as justify how many points it should be worth before starting the project. As long as it remotely related to our class content, I said yes.In the middle of our DNA and inheritance unit, one of my adopted students (she was Asian with white parents) who was artistically talented, asked me if she could draw what she thought her birth parents looked like for extra credit.I thought it was a pretty cool idea which meshed perfectly with both an interest of hers and what we were studying. Additionally, it was a very courageous undertaking for an adopted 12-year-old.We discussed her examining her own physical traits, looking at dominant and recessive features and then going backwards to illustrate what her birth parents might have looked like. There were no right or wrong answers and this was a neat way for her to apply the concepts we were learning.The final extra-credit packet that we agreed upon would include both her artwork and a handful of Punnett Squares that she’d create showing the potential genetic crosses from her birth parents. Those crosses would guide the features she’d draw.A week or so later, she hands me her extra credit: two very well-drawn anime characters.I asked her if she also had the Punnett Squares.She said she didn’t.I asked her which of her own physical characteristics she chose to explore.No answer.I asked her what dominant traits she thought she may have inherited from her parents.No answer.I asked, “Jenna (not her real name) did you do any research related to what we’re doing in class for this project, or just draw two random anime characters?”She nodded in the affirmative - she just drew two random characters.I told her that what she turned in wasn’t what we agreed upon, but she could take it back, finish the rest and whenever she was done, turn it in for extra credit.She told me she didn’t want to put any more time into the assignment.I said if that’s the case, I’d still give her 25% of the agreed upon extra-credit points because of her effort…they were really good drawings.She went back to her desk, and I thought that was it.That afternoon, I received a voicemail from the parents who weren’t happy.Over the course of the next month, I sat through hours and hours of meetings on top of endless emails to clear up the accusation that I was a racist and violated her civil rights because what she chose to turn in did not receive full credit…Image source

Freshman year we had this teacher that would make you empty your pockets if she caught you chewing gum so she could confiscate the rest of it.This goes on for weeks and after several of my friends get in trouble for having their cell phone with them, I decided to do something.We had this class right after lunch, so I spent all day collecting stuff and putting it in my pockets. I had one of those North Face jackets that had the pockets that came all the way up to the collar, so I was able to fit all sorts of stuff in the pockets.After lunch it was my time to shine. I walked in the classroom looking a little like… a balloon? I was definitely larger than normal and I really don't know why the teacher wasn't suspicious when I walked in the door.So I'm chewing my gum very obnoxiously, and the teacher just overlooks me. For some reason, I was one of her favorite students, so I got special treatment in this class sometimes. Or maybe she knew something was up. So I start chewing another stick of gum. Nothing.I was chewing four sticks of gum before she called on me to empty my pockets.I unzip one pocket and pull out my keys. Then my best friend’s cheer shoe. Then someone else’s keys. A t-shirt. A clothes hanger. Two wallets. Tampons. A fork. Cell phone cases. Packets of gum. A stuffed Waldo, yes like Where’s Waldo.So every time I pull something out, some one in the class claims it and I toss it to them. The teacher is fuming.“Just leave!” She orders me.“She still has *whatever items were still in my pockets*”. My classmates called out.So the teacher left. She never checked pockets again. Our cellphones and our gum were now safe.

You will not find information about how to implement such strategies anywhere. Typically, however, these competitions come with case packets, where you can find out more about the tradable instruments. Because you want to make markets, I will assume that you are looking at a case with multiple instruments being quoted at once. Your goal as a market-maker, then, is to try and collect spreads while keeping your risk moderate.Of course nobody here will flesh out a market making strategy for you to implement, but keep the following in mind:Keep an eye on your overall risk. This is probably the single most important number to consider.You do not need to quote on both sides at all times and you certainly do not need to be at the top of the book on both sides all the time. Think of what happens to your overall risk and PnL if you get filled on a quote, then quote accordingly.It is OK to take liquidity when your risk is more than you are comfortable with. If you have pricing models, then you might be inclined to bet a bit more on them when they suggest that you trade in a way that reduces your risk.This should be more than enough to get you started.Good luck!
