PDF Editor FAQ

As a parent, what was your “are you fucking kidding me” moment with your child's school?

This was my mom’s moment. It was with one teacher, not the whole school.Last year there was a field trip to a local amusement park for physics day. At physics day, you compete in a number of competitions all based on physics (egg drop, build a roller coaster prototype, etc.) It was required to go and to participate in a certain number of these competitions. To encourage people, my teacher made turning in the permission slip an assignment (100 points), and as with all assignments, if it was late, points were taken off.It was a few days before the permission slip was due and I had left it on the dining table. My mom was kind enough to bring it and went to the office to pay the fee (roughly $10 for the bus. There were ways for it to be covered for students unable to pay, especially considering that it was required). I told her when I asked her to bring the slip specifically to bring it to me, because the teacher told us to turn the slip directly in to her. The office, however, told my mom that they would take it and bring it to Mrs. Gray (the physics teacher). She left it with them, and thought nothing more if it.Sometime after the slip was due, I checked my grades and saw that I had a shockingly low grade in physics, seeing as my project for physics day was already completely done. This was partly because I’d forgotten to submit my daily progress for a couple of days, and partly because my permission slip, a 100 point assignment, was put in as a zero.I asked Mrs. Gray about it, telling her that my mom had paid the money and turned the permission slip into the office. She asked me what the directions were on Canvas (a website/online tool used by our school for assignments, missed days of notes, etc.) She wanted us to submit a photo of the permission slip and proof of payment (either a receipt or a signature on the permission slip from the office) and THEN she wanted us to hand it in to HER not the office. She wasn’t wrong, the directions were all there, but the office wasn’t aware of them, and thus, gave my mom incorrect information (remember I told her to bring the permission slip to me, not the office).Mrs. Gray told me that my permission slip should still be in the office, as she had returned all the ones she got from the office back to the office. It wasn’t there.I told her that and she got me a new permission slip. I asked her if it would be late even though it was turned in on time earlier. She said yes, because I didn’t follow the directions, I was going to lose points.I texted my mom all of this and she was PISSED. She drove down to the school and explained the situation the same way that I had. My teacher explained that I had chances to fix it before it was due. My mom argued that I didn’t know it was a problem until then and therefore couldn’t fix it, which was also true, besides, either Mrs. Gray or the office had lost the permission slip and I had no control over that. I also had no control over my mom turning in the permission slip at the office rather than bring it to me. Mrs. Gray would not step down. She was going to mark my points down no matter what. My mom was furious and after quite some time going back and forth she was shaking and struggled to sign the form. I brought it to Mrs. Gray, who said some bullshit about the 100 points not having much of an impact on my grade anyways. My mom ended up emailing the principal explaining the entire situation and asking for an appointment, Cc-ing Mrs. Gray. He emailed back and said that it sounded mostly like an error of the office (probably because literally no other teacher does field trips or permission slips this way, and she has never done them this way in the past). I checked my grade before my mom met with the principal and saw that she had put the full 100 points in (and it had brought my grade up by a letter grade or a half letter grade, I can’t remember exactly what it was).My mom ended up cancelling the appointment, I got first place in my physics day competition (Demo Design, basically I had to teach/demonstrate a physics concept and I only won because of the uniqueness of my topic: the Cheerios Effect), after that year the teacher moved back to Michigan and took my ex-best friend (ex for unrelated reasons) with her and my mom still hates both of them. The end.

Is it illegal to take a picture of a child?

It is in school. Anytime a teacher wanted to film or photograph school activities/projects that students participated in had to have copies of signed permission slips from their parents.

What are some good pieces of advice that most college students are not ever likely to hear?

37 Pieces of Advice I Didn't Hear in CollegeYour degree doesn't make you special and it doesn't guarantee you a job, happiness, or success.College debt should not be taken on frivolously and it can limit your options tremendously.Studying the liberal arts can be very valuable for your future career. Getting a degree in liberal arts, not so much. Don't trust the adviser who tells you otherwise.A law degree should never be a backup plan.If your degree is the most impressive thing about you by the time you've graduated, you're doing it wrong.Don't stress about your grades — in the end, there's only you and the value you can create.Regularly assign yourself creative projects to finish and put out into the world.Don't brag about your all nighters — all I see is someone who procrastinates.College is not and should not be the best time of your life.Spend the bulk of your studying time learning about things you don't learn in class. You'll learn more about writing by writing a regular blog than you will writing an essay. Do it.Get work experience as soon as possible.Don't pad your resume with clubs or other things you aren't actually interested in. It'll show up later.Sit down and really consider whether you even want to be in college. Ask yourself, what does attending college really give me that skipping it won't? Ask yourself what you want out of college? Who do you want to be on the other end of the 4 years?Seriously consider taking a gap year — it'll be the best experience you have "in college."Take advantage of the free money on campus — you're spending a small fortune to be there, so make the most of it while it lasts.Remember that networking is different than having a class with someone or sharing a drink. It requires hard work! Just because you go to X school does not mean you're guaranteed meaningful connections. If you don't know what you want to do, college is a very costly way to find out. Consider an alternative.Get over your school ranking, it's not that important and you aren't that special.Keep in mind that your professors don't always know best.Finish as quickly as possible.Don't make graduate school your default option out of college — it means more debt and more time out of the workplace. There are better ways to change the world than campus activism — explore them.Grow the hell up and stop whining about everything.Don't go for a double major — it doesn't prove anything and it will take time away from more important personal and professional work you could be doing.Be humble — you got a good grade? So what. What have you created? What value have you put out into the world? There are always going to be bigots, real or perceived — you let them win when you allow yourself to be offended by everything. Stop it.Your degree is not a permission slip to start your life – you can start anytime you want. Go build something!Stop treating your parents as your owners, even if they're paying tuition. You don't owe them anything.Recognize that college is not like the real world and plan accordingly.Learn 2-3 skills that make you more interesting, more fun, and more marketable. Focus your education around these goals.Give yourself assignments and reading lists — the ones you get in school will pale in comparison. You are who you associate with — choose wisely. You don't need friends just to have friends.Create a product or a service and try to sell it. Even if your goal isn't to be a business owner, the experience is tremendously valuable. As one responder said: "Love lifting weights? Try your hand at physical training. Like parkour? Make a parkour DVD and try to sell it online. Dig paintball? Start a paintball blog and see if you can sell ad space."Don't skip club meetings to go to parties or study for tests — clubs are one of the few redeeming things about being on campus and you should make use of them as much as possible. The best thing about being young is that the world doesn't have very high expectations yet. Comments from Our Customers

I tried the Recoverit program and it really saved my life. I thought I had lost everything but this program found all my key files and was able to restore them - FOR FREE (I only needed less than 100 Megs). Their Customer service team even help me out without me having to order and pay for the product. WOW! I hope I never need their product for large amounts of data (eg. a total disk failure), but if I do, I will have no hesitation paying for a licence. Its simple to use and it works!
