What inspired your desire to study Theology and what is it that keeps you doing so?

The question posed is: “What inspired your desire to study Theology and what is that keeps you doing so?”I explain in more detail in my Blog Carlton Newman: Connecting with God via the Christ Flame in the Heart (Gal 4:6) but here is a summary.I graduated from High School in June of 1964, attended a year of Junior College, and then went to Hawaii for the summer. I decided to stay in Hawaii and not return to school. The Viet Nam War was heating up and so I got Drafted into the Army in January 1966. After Basic and Advanced Training I was given the opportunity to attend the NCO Academy and become a Drill Instructor. They were sending experienced Sergeants to Viet Nam and so they needed to train instructors to replace them. They were just graduating their first class of Drill Corporals and I attended the second class at Fort Knox, KY. I was a Drill Instructor until my Honorable Discharge in January 1968. I attained the rank of Sergeant E-5 two months before my discharge.A fellow Drill Instructor, who had attended the first Drill Corporal class, lived near where I lived and was discharged two months before me. When I got out of the Army he helped me get a job in which I was eventually trained to be a Computer Operator on IBM System 360 computers. That job and the GI Bill enabled me to go back to college and eventually earn my B.S. Degree in Business Administration/Finance.While in the Army, I was given Riot Control and Counterinsurgency Training because of the riots on college campuses. While in class one day I observed a group of about 12 individuals manipulating a gathering of students to become more and more agitated. These were hard core individuals, trained in counterinsurgency tactics, who were manipulating students to cause disruption and chaos on the campus. It shocked me to see this on my campus. Not too long before this, students were shot by National Guard troops on the campus of Kent State. I was really disturbed by this.I started becoming more aware of other areas of society in which there were problems that were exacerbated by inept leaders and deliberate manipulation by unseen players. I was seeing it everywhere I looked and it became a great burden to me. I worked alone at night as a Computer Operator and one night, in the winter of 1972, I literally collapsed to my knees; the burden had become so great. I did not know what to do. I had work to do but I could not move. I was not religious but I knew the Lord’s Prayer and friend in 7th Grade had taught me the Hail Mary. I found myself saying these aloud over and over again for, what seemed, a very long time. Finally I just started talking to God about all the problems in the world that I had become aware of and how it just did not make sense that they should continue. After all, if your car breaks down, you go to a mechanic. If you get sick, you go to a doctor. Society in general was very sick and there didn’t seem to be anyone with a cure. I finally just told God that if there was anything that I could do to help him fix this world, to show me what to do.Immediately, I and the room became engulfed in a Light that I had never experienced before. To say that the Light was brighter than a thousand suns would not quite be accurate because this was not like any light I had experienced on earth. It was very bright but did not hurt the eyes. To the contrary, it was soothing, loving, caressing and blessing me. It contained about every virtue you could imagine and conveyed a great sense of Peace. I knew that God had heard me and that He would show me where to go and what to do. I was still a Junior in College. I lost interest in business and began taking some courses in Religious Studies, and yet had to continue also with my business courses in order to graduate.I sought answers from teachers and clerics but no one could help me understand what was happening to me. I was becoming more and more spiritually sensitive and aware of spiritual things. There are dormant spiritual faculties within us which can be awakened and quickened when the time is right. Apparently, this was my time. The only thing that I can relate it to is the moment when Saul (Paul) encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus and the Light blinded his eyes until Ananias restored his sight in Acts 9:17. Even though I was not blinded by the Light and was not as fully awakened and quickened as Paul, I was seeking my Ananias. The Light awakened and quickened Paul to a more perfect understanding of Christ and he eventually confessed in 1 Cor 2:16 that he had “the mind of Christ” which he labored to instill in us as he said “…let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil 2:5). I have been laboring to do that.I understood from the Light that I would not find my answers in Orthodoxy and established religions, not that the Teachings of Jesus Christ were not adequate, but that his Teachings were no longer correctly being taught in the Churches. I began reading and attending lectures and seminars outside of the “mainstream”. I was to graduate in June 1974. On the bulletin board outside one of my classrooms I saw a poster for another seminar to be held over the 1974 Easter Break. I felt almost compelled to attend. I am glad I did because I found my Ananias AND Paul in the form of a petite woman named Elizabeth Clare Prophet. She had the Mind of Christ and taught others so that they might attain it. She was a true servant of Christ ministering unto that developing Christ Child in the hearts of man. She was a servant of Jesus Christ (Rev 10:7) and of “the spirits of just men made perfect” (Hbr 12:23) who “speaketh from heaven” (Hbr 12:25), whom we now know as the Ascended Masters, and they spoke through her, as the prophets of old, and revealed to us, through her and her husband Mark, their “Everlasting Gospel” (Rev 14:6).It has not been easy to stay on this Path all of these years. I have gone through the Dark Night of the Soul as described by Saint John of the Cross. There have been days, weeks, months, and years where I could see nothing good, no worth, in myself. The reason I continue is: “I ASKED FOR IT”. Back in the winter of 1972 I had asked God to show me how to help him, and He led me to Elizabeth Clare Prophet who taught me The Science of the Spoken Word, a dynamic prayer form called Decrees, which enables us to invoke God’s Light into the knotty conditions of this world. It is God’s Light and only God’s Light which can free us and heal us and this planet. And so, I established a habit, a momentum, in the daily giving of Decrees which I do no matter how down I feel. That has been my saving grace, that and The Teachings of the Ascended Masters in their Everlasting Gospel. And so, I commend you to a study of the Teachings of the Ascended Masters and their dynamic prayer form called Decrees which utilizes the power of the Word, which is Christ, in the Science of the Spoken Word. Are we living in a simulation?

Yes and no.We live in a universe, that as Peter Wenzell so eloquently stated in his own answer to this question, is 99.999999% NOTHING. Now think about that for a minute. Some of the truly erudite PhDs on quora maintain it is all “fields” (QED), or rather quantum electrodynamics. What do mainstream physicists think about Rodney Brooks' Fields of Color book about quantum field theory?Does the above mean nothing is real?No of course not. Susskind, the father of string theory, freely suggests that the universe runs on information, and combined with a form of physical laws that create a type of software, but he is quick to point out that “matter” the physical form is “the memory storage device”.Penrose, states as though it is beyond obvious, that matter is coupled using light as physical and non physical medium.I think he says…” so light is coupled to matter….”Physicists tie light into knots – Physics World (image credit and text credit below)Fantastical knot-like structures of light could soon be created in the lab thanks to calculations made by physicists in the US, Poland and Spain. They have discovered a new family of solutions to Maxwell’s equations that are knots of light that do not disperse or lose their specific topological properties as they propagate. The researchers say such knots, if made for real, could be used to trap atoms or create similar knots in plasmas or quantum fluids.Due to Gargantua’s massive gravitational pull, “every hour on that planet is seven years on Earth”. After a massive tidal wave hits the spacecraft and delays their exit, they find that 23 years have passed on Earth.Movie plots explained: Interstellar is the source for the text above:Peter the above represents an almost 1:10,000 ratio (8,760 to be exact)General relativity does not apply to fast rotating bodies, so in my scifi book, earth is a penal colony virtual reality, where we can live….I picked a thousand ot one ratio to be ultra conservtive in my math lol so one lifetime on “RIchard Martini’s farside equals ten lifetimes here on grumpy old earthI think “God” runs simuations at ten times the speed to test what happens on “home world” anterras where …..things last longer so world war II would be TEN times worse…So if I thought my ATN was bad here on home world it would have felt ten times longer and ten times more painful, prettty scary thought.Peter, it was your simulated reality answer that gave me this epiphany so thank you again…My greatest sorrow was not getting to be a fighter pilot like my dad because I was born with terrible vision. The closest I got was a student pilot with great thick eyeglasses, aviator style :PMy dad was shot down over France, and tortured by the Gestapo…So one day, when I was about 15 he “thought” i had told him to eff off, so he runs at me both thumbs extended to gouge out both my eyes lol.I knew he has PTSD, but I never saw that coming.I deflected/parried his lead rigth hand, but the left thumb got me dead center in the right eye but god bless those kick ass aviator style eye glasses I ended with a deep gouge and scar below my eye all the way to my jaw line…..So i think we pick lives, parents desperately aware but hoping we can make things a little better than what the quantum computers or mind of god predicts ……..I think this is the only thing that makes sense for me, we either know it will ormight happen and we decide to take the risk…just like improptu or improv lines in a play…..I do know or rather was told, I helped in a previous life to develop nuclear weapons, maybe as a janitor or a physicist who knowsBut I know i traded off 200 000 instant deaths in exchange for millions and millions and here from my scifi book and I apoloigze but this has been my greatest sorrow…:PChapter 11Beautiful Blue SkiesI want to see the sky and the stars before I leave this mortal coil. To look up at the immenseness of it all and let the light of stars that have traveled millions of light years to touch my eyes one last time. Lastly I want to die like a soldier not like an old man, with rheumy eyes and a hunched back, who shuffles along from one hip replacement to the next. They say guardians never retire, but my greatest fear is never being allowed to return either on missions or for some rest and relaxation.I guess at some level I knew if I got rid of that many guardians they would come for me. But I never thought they would send Nikki. My beautiful Nikki, who was looking rather pissed off truth be told as she sat across from me her small hands laid peacefully on the table resting on my own hands as light as a bird. The hand thing took a while to negotiate and she had only joined me after I laid both hands on my lap underneath the table.Truthfully we both knew just how fast the other was and hands on the table had allowed me to kill the last guardian with a lethal strike driving a small shard from their broken nose into their not so clever brain. Stupid people annoy me, stupid guardians more so, but there would be hell to pay when I crossed over, Nikki looked supremely annoyed. Her face a combination of proud mother and extremely upset parent.I gently pulled both my hands from under hers and slid then back under the table. Annoyingly so, I could feel tears in my eyes, knowing this would never make things right between the other guardian and I nonetheless looked up at the ceiling ever so slightly. The last words to leave my lips were, “Nikki I want to see the stars before I……..” as I felt that small shard of bone drift into my poor addled brain, next I felt a tiny little fist first crush my Adams apple or hyoid bone to the medical experts. I don t think I even felt the edge of hand strike to the brachial nerve or felt the atlas bone snap like a matchstick. Four beautifully executed kill strikes in less than 9 seconds, Nikki really is an artist. It would be nice to leave this world. This now barren land where no one could see the stars. In about 200 years, the nuclear winter would be over but not my nightmares. I had such a modest, harmless sounding role in it all. I built a centrifuge, the most efficient ever seen. Why? Well to separate two identical atoms from each other. Uranium 238 which occurs 99.3% of the time from U235 which is exceedingly rare at about .7% of the time. You see if two atoms are different by only 3 neutrons they are almost, almost impossible to separate from each other. Except they each weigh a slightly different amount but chemically and in every other way they are identical. So we spun the little buggers in essentially a giant ferris wheel and the lighter ones are concentrated in the center and collected. The process is repeated in a type of cascade and each time more refined residuals are collected. So why do I sit here, suffering for my crime? What awful thing did I do? I failed to act, I paused and humored my pacifist tendencies. I delayed and destroyed a tactical advantage.A one sided, over quickly war was completely prevented. Instead, I helped create a MAD situation, that stands for “ mutually assured destruction” scenario by the way. So instead of a few cities being wiped out, a few million deaths, we killed billions. We killed an entire planet with my misplaced compassion. My only job was to refine the U235 as quickly as possible but I held back a key discovery thinking that might prevent widespread slaughter and the other side caught up. When all hell finally broke lose every dam side was armed to the teeth just itching to get in that first preemptive strike. So for hundreds of years no one saw the sky. For children of the light there was no greater punishment. Only the toughest, hardiest souls chose to be reincarnated on that cold barren world. In the darkness, some of the most beautiful works of art were created. Some of the most beautiful souls were forged on that planet under the most inhospitable conditions. Imagine hearing a variation of Fur Elise in a massive underground cave, each note resonating, hanging in the still air perfectly with the most attentive audience in the world. Really there was not much else to do but create and enjoy every form of art imaginable, that and fight to survive to eat and stay alive. That world created more Mozarts, Beethovens and Rodin types than any other world, those souls went on to become the leading artists everywhere, the children of the light they were called as a great big ironic joke.I think that is where the belief originated that true suffering creates great art. For my failure to act, what right do I have to see the stars or the sky before I leave this mortal coil. So really to sum it all up as: “All’s well that ends well” is a little callous.Anyway, back to those beautifully executed kill strikes….. it is so nice to deal with the best. I love you Nikki darling.Thank you darling for letting me die like a soldier not an old man. I was only 24, sometimes Lauren can be such a gentle kind soul.Redacted: Lauren’s Notes24 years old and he thanks me, no commentSo about 4–5 years ago, I was finally diagnosed with a disease with this cute summary:This disorder is regarded by many medical professionals to comprise the most severe form of chronic pain known in medical practice. In some patients, pain may be unresponsive even to opioid drugs at any dose level that leaves the patient conscious. The disorder has thus acquired the unfortunate and possibly inflammatory nickname, "the suicide disease".[6]Source for the above: Atypical trigeminal neuralgia - WikipediaSo my doctor advised me I was on palliative care and once the medical cannabis stopped working, it would be opioids for me and likely about 2 years befoe I needed enough that I would stop breathing and die.YAY? I finally get the much needed reset on this lousy “virtual reality”, prison colony earth for short? I remember thinking in my petty self pity mode.So one Near death experience later, perhaps far more I had this brilliant idea, if matter is TOTALLY convertible to energy…. why dont i try this :PQuantum suicide and immortality - Wikipediaand then better yet this : The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013 film) - Wikipedia but instead the original a personal favorite of my almost 100 year old father’s favorite version: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947 film) - WikipediaWalter Mitty (Kaye) is an "inconsequential guy from Perth Amboy, New Jersey".[3]He is henpecked and harassed by everyone in his life including his bossy mother, his overbearing, idea-stealing boss Bruce Pierce, his dimwitted fiancée Gertrude Griswold, Gertrude's obnoxious would-be suitor Tubby Wadsworth, and her loud-mouthed mother, Mrs. Griswold.Walter's escape from their incessant needling is to imagine all sorts of exciting and impossible lives for himself, fueled by the pulp magazines he reads every day as an editor at the Pierce Publishing Company. But his dreams only seem to land him in more trouble. In one scene, while stoking the heating boiler, he dreams what it would be like to be an RAF fighter pilot. He is awakened from this daydream by his mother, who orders him to come to dinner. Believing he is still a British fighter pilot, he salutes, and places a red-hot poker under his arm—only to burn a hole in his suit jacket.Spitfire Mk IX BS410 Occoches (English)I blame my boyish good looks on him, sadly I lack the military bearing :PBelow is a photograph of one of the valves from his Rolls Royce Merlin engine. So…lolSince all metals are created from the explosion of a star and since Is Quantum Processing Operative in the Brain? Now, the yin and the yang of his life – quantum science and mental illness – have come together in an intensely personal research project. Fisher suspects that the human brain could be exploiting quantum processing, and he has proposed a mechanism through which that might be possible. The work has ushered him into the hot, and hotly contested, emerging field of quantum biology. In the paper “Quantum Cognition: The possibility of processing with nuclear spins in the brain,” published in the Annals of Physics in November 2015, Fisher outlines a process through which neural quantum processing could be occurring in humans, using phosphorus nuclear spins as the quantum bits, or qubits. He also identifies specific biological molecules and mechanisms that might induce long-term quantum entanglement. Is Quantum Processing Operative in the Brain?Condensed matter researcher and Perimeter DVRC Matthew Fisher’s latest work has ushered him into the emerging field of quantum biology and the nascent area of “quantum neuroscience.”It was 1986. Top Gun and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off were playing the big screen, while “Papa Don’t Preach” and “The Final Countdown” ruled the airwaves. In Illinois, 26-year-old quantum scientist Matthew Fisher was finishing his PhD. With a postdoc already secured and a summer wedding on the horizon, he went to bed one February night with the world at his feet. The next morning, he woke in a mental fog so thick he could barely speak. His limbs moved as if through molasses. Everything hurt. Nothing made sense. In one swift, brutal transition, he descended into severe depression. The illness would both drive and plague him for years to come: through an exceptional career, fatherhood, a failed marriage, prestigious awards, remarriage, and a brief sojourn in a psychiatric ward. Now, the yin and the yang of his life – quantum science and mental illness – have come together in an intensely personal research project. Fisher suspects that the human brain could be exploiting quantum processing, and he has proposed a mechanism through which that might be possible. The work has ushered him into the hot, and hotly contested, emerging field of quantum biology.*Quantum mechanics describes things at their most fundamental level, but it was long assumed that living things were too warm, wet, and messy for quantum effects to be sustained there. In the last 10 years, that viewpoint has been challenged by a new field called quantum biology. From photosynthesis to bird navigation to human smell and beyond, evidence is mounting that “exotic” quantum processes like spin and entanglement are being used in nature. But many scientists remain skeptical of the field’s validity. A significant stumbling block is that quantum processing, as practiced in a lab, isolates tiny and fragile particles from their noisy surroundings in order to harness and control their quantum properties. To suggest that such properties could exist and persist in biological systems under ordinary circumstances goes against what is known about quantum materials.More contentious still is a nascent subfield, quantum neuroscience, which theorizes quantum processing occurring in the brain. In the late 1980s, eminent physicist Roger Penrose posited “microtubules” as a biological analogue of quantum computation in his book The Emperor’s New Mind. After an initial flurry of interest from cross-disciplinarians, the idea was discounted by much of the scientific community.Matthew FisherFisher, who is now a condensed matter researcher at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics and a Perimeter Distinguished Visiting Research Chair (DVRC) specializing in quantum phase transitions and superconductivity, is aiming to resuscitate the idea, but by a vastly different biological process. If the hypothesis – outlined in the sidebar – is right, it could rewrite what we know about our brains.*The earliest recorded reference to studies of the human brain is written in an ancient Egyptian medical text from around 1600 BCE, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that neuroscience became a discipline of its own.Humans have made huge advances in understanding the inner structure and workings of the brain, yet it remains one of the most complex systems in the universe – and one of the most mysterious.Fisher’s quest to untangle part of the puzzle is rooted in his personal history. Mental illness is present throughout his extended family, but is expressed in different ways – a situation that is not unusual. (Professional boundary-hopping runs in the family, too: his father and brother are both physicists exploring biology.)In 1988, two years after the onset of his illness, he sought an official diagnosis and treatment. It took another three weeks for the antidepressants to kick in. When they did, he says, it felt like a miracle. “Little gaps in the cloud opened, and I started swimming towards the light, slowly re-emerging as a functioning and feeling human,” he says. The transformation fascinated and mystified him; for decades, he harboured a largely latent desire to understand it scientifically. Three years ago, he finally launched an intense research effort that he kept largely under wraps. “A reputation to protect, after all,” he quips. He started by learning everything he could about lithium. First used to treat mania and depression in the 1880s, lithium has been in widespread clinical use since the 1960s. As just one atom, it is the simplest of drugs, but its impact on cognition can be profound. For a physicist used to boiling problems down to their simplest state, it seemed the best place to begin. He spent hours each night immersed in biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and more. Eventually, he pieced together an idea for an experiment to test different isotopes of lithium on rats. But someone had beaten him to it. In 1986 – the same year that Fisher’s illness asserted itself – a group of scientists at Cornell University had examined how different lithium isotopes impact the maternal behaviour of rodents. The resulting paper blew Fisher away. Normal rats who had received lithium-7 (the most common naturally occurring isotope) during pregnancy exhibited the hallmarks of depression as mothers. Pregnant rats given the rarer lithium-6 became supermoms, building bigger nests and performing more grooming, feeding, and nurturing of their babies than the placebo group.Isotopes are different forms of the same element: the nuclei contain the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. That means lithium-6 and lithium-7 have slightly different masses. But in water, lithium polarizes the molecules around it to create a hydration shell so large that this difference in mass is rendered moot. The only other differentiator between the lithium isotopes is nuclear spin. Lithium-7 has a spin of 3/2. In a biochemical setting, it cannot stay isolated from its environment for long. In quantum terms, it “decoheres.”Lithium-6 has a spin of 1, but is dubbed an “honorary spin ½” because it is largely unaffected by electric fields or charges. Indeed, the lithium-6 nuclear spin can withstand interference – or “remain coherent” – in water for up to five minutes, which is an astoundingly long time for the quantum realm.Fisher was confronted with a remarkable possibility: nuclear spins might be operative in neural processing. (He has since patented the use of lithium-6 as a mental illness treatment and, at the end of 2015, he spent a sabbatical at Stanford to reproduce the rat experiment.)But lithium is a trace element, only present at very low concentrations in the body when not taken as a medication. If nuclear spin did play a role in cognition in general, Fisher realized it had to be via another, more commonly occurring element. He set out to find common biological elements with a nuclear spin of ½. Besides hydrogen, he found only one: phosphorus, which, in the form of the phosphate ion, is central to body metabolism (the storage, transport, and release of energy fuelling biochemical reactions). As outlined in the sidebar, Fisher identifies how phosphorus could be a “neural qubit,” with phosphate ions as the possible qubit-transporter. If two entangled phosphate ions are taken up by different molecules – specifically, a kind called Posner molecules – this could function as a “qubit memory.”The process could create, and potentially sustain, long-term quantum entanglement in the brain.*Long-time friend and colleague Senthil Todadri has been aware of Fisher’s sideline interest for some time. In the 1990s, Roger Penrose visited Santa Barbara to give a lecture on quantum cognition. “As far as I could tell, there were only two people in the room who thought Penrose was not crazy: one was Penrose himself, and the other was Matthew,” says Todadri, who is now a condensed matter professor at MIT and a Perimeter DVRC.Todadri was skeptical, and for years shut down discussions about the topic. “I didn’t think there was anything to it. I had my biases.”It wasn’t until 2015 that he finally agreed to sit down and work through Fisher’s ideas. They were both attending the “Convergence“ conference at Perimeter, and felt that the Institute, where venturing off the beaten path is considered good practice, was probably the best place for their long-deferred conversation.“I was surprised. I expected something wild, but this is serious science,” he says.A few months later, John Preskill, professor at Caltech, hosted Fisher for a seminar and dinner-group discussion. Afterwards, Preskill wrote on his blog Quantum Frontiers: “These are definitely scientific questions inviting further investigation and experimental exploration. … It’s going to be great fun to see where it leads. If you are a young and ambitious scientist, you may be contemplating the dilemma: should I pursue quantum physics or neuroscience? Maybe, just maybe, the right answer is: both.”*Fisher now hopes to put aspects of his hypothesis to the test, and is seeking funding for further lab experiments to help prove, or disprove, his ideas.Todadri still isn’t entirely convinced – Fisher’s hypothesis challenges most of what we expect from quantum mechanics – but he says that doesn’t mean the questions shouldn’t be pursued.“Being skeptical does not mean you can’t ask very specific questions,” he says. “There’s a big difference between [quantum cognition] being very unlikely and being established that it hasn’t occurred. It would be so exciting that it’s worth looking at with a lot of hard-nosed skepticism.”Fisher hopes his research will stimulate new enquiry into both the brain’s function, and treatment for mental illness. He also hopes that sharing his personal story will help dismantle some of the prejudice around mental illness. Finally, the yin and yang of Fisher’s life are in the open, and they are pushing him in the same direction. Where it takes him – like the field of quantum biology itself – remains an open question.“It’s about as multidisciplinary as you can imagine,” he says. “It goes from nuclear spins and organic chemistry to quantum physics and neuroscience. It’s the whole gamut, and that’s good. Maybe something exciting is going to come out.”I just found out, much to my surprise and chagrin, that I had an unknown friend here familiar with mind numbing pain.Peter, this answer suggested to me a mirror image explanation totally consistent with what you are proposing, that being DNA and microtubules are EMF (electromagnetic fields) hollow cavity resonators, where DNA is what stores long term, many lives memories, while the assembly and coherent behaviour of all of the above, is an optical quantum computer using the hollow waveguides with their unique pinching ability to allow back propagation in the neural network. The crucial after an incredibly long derivative y=w(w-1) which allows for imaginary number solutions and is consistent with the y=x>-x.Susskind introduced me to this idea. But this video, about 11 minutes in, beautifully summarizes my own theory, which is in agreement with yours. And not my theory so much as a minor addendum to yours and susskinds core idea…….Yes but more likely that our non physical selves are EMF/QFT p-adic networks while the memory storage device is DNA and RNA permanent and semi permanent (RAM and HDD SSD) drives so to speak where subquanta store our memories until we croak then God/god only knows what lol :)Subquanta is 1–3 years old as a topic and not widely regarded on quora but considered fringe science (justifiably until you realize what the NIAC actually FUNDS, then you have a holy shot moment).Susskind, greene and company believe in a holographic universerve where atoms are the memory storage devices.Beautiful lecture I will try to find it.

Is Falun Gong an evil cult? Why or why not?

Not all things are as they seem. That I can tell you for sure about Falun Gong.If you randomly ask some Chinese people to answer this question, since its a practice that originated in the Mainland, you will be surprised to get sometimes diametral opposite answers. Some appreciate and praise its benefits, while others hate it sincerely and call it an “evil cult“. Why? And where is the truth of the matter? Is it indeed an evil practice? What defines it as good or evil?Obviously, there must be objective factors that determine whether something is good or bad, as feelings and shallow perceptions that are not based on a thorough investigation from a neutral point of view will not lead people to an objective conclusion. Most of the people who put a label on Falun Gong - be it good or bad - haven't really studied its teachings, haven't met with a significant number of people who practice it to directly see its effect, nor did they thoroughly analysed the arguments of both parties (the Chinese Communist Party and Falun Gong) to see the bigger picture. How many have such an open mind to reconsider things after forming a solid yet fake opinion about something?Well, if you want the truth when the subject of study is so controversial, then you really got to approach it an open mind and from all perspectives, without preconceived notions that make you take one side or the other based on what you knew previously (but that didn't come from an extensive investigation of your own). And that is difficult to achieve regarding this complicated issue.I could engage in a long and detailed analysis of this issue, since I got the chance to study this controversial subject, but it seems there is already a proper one available on Quora, that is to say, Andrew P.S.'s answer to Why is the Chinese government against Falun Gong?, so I will make use of it here:This is one of the most intriguing stories in history.Endorsed for years in the 90s by the Chinese government, Falun Gong flourished at an unprecedented scale, then it was banned, brutely suppressed, and now, in the present days, under the current leadership, it is in a quite peculiar situation, since president Xi Jinping isn't opposing it, but he didn't explicitly stop the official suppression either.I will briefly elaborate on these points and put them into context. The begining of the Falun Gong movementAs presented by its founder, Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa) is a cultivation practice of both mind and body. It involves gentile qigong exercises, meditation and a moral code - Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance, as well as cosmology elements and complex spiritual teachings. The practitioners must focus on improving their morality and plane of consciences, while also attending their normal jobs and responsibilities in society.According to Freedom House, throughout the early and mid-1990s, Falun Gong, its practitioners, and its founder were often the subjects of awards, positive media coverage, and government support. From 1992 to 1994, the founder of Falun Gong toured the country giving lectures and seminars to introduce the practice under the auspices of the state-run qigong association. State media reports from that period laud the benefits of Falun Gong practice and show Falun Gong practitioners receiving “healthy citizen awards.” In an occurrence almost unimaginable today, the founder of Falun Gong gave a lecture at the Chinese embassy in Paris in 1995, at the government’s invitation. As word spread, Chinese from every strata of society - doctors, farmers, workers, soldiers, some of them Communist Party members - began taking up the practice. Sites of daily exercise groups in Beijing, for instance, included professors from the prestigious Tsinghua University or employees of state media like Xinhua or China Central Television. Though students of Falun Gong would gather in groups to practice its meditative exercises, many saw the discipline as a personal rather than collective endeavor to enhance their health, mental well being, and spiritual wisdom. There were no signs of a political agenda or criticism of the Chinese Communist Party. In fact, many high ranking officials held Falun Gong in high esteem and publicly recognized its benefits for health and social stability. For example, Director of China's Sports Commission, Mr. Wu Shaozu, applauded the health benefits the practice brought to the nation. In 1998, China’s State Sports Commission estimated that there were 70 million Falun Gong practitioners in the whole country, while other estimates talk about as many as 100 million members. Why did Falun Gong become so popular in only a couple of years? One of the reasons was that it indeed achieved the effect of improving peoples health and wellbeing and it was free of cost, there was no membership fees, so word about it spread naturally in all parts of the country.Several extensive surveys and studies were conducted regarding the effects of Falun Gong, one of which claimed that the practice helped the state save 3.270 yuan per person a year in health costs. Now multiply this figure by tens of millions of practitioners. In fact, over the years, its healing power has been validated across the world. You can find such studies here:Have there been medical research on the health benefits of Falun Gong?A Summary of Five Independent Studies of the Health Benefits of Falun GongCBS Health Watch: Three part series on Falun DafaMeeting Library | Meeting Library (this one published by the American Society of Clinical Oncology is quite surprising since its conclusion is: “Falun Gong practice can help terminal cancer patients survive significantly longer, in addition to notable symptom improvement“)Nota bene: Healing illnesses via meditation and qigong is not some kind of old fashion superstition or a consequence of some kind of placebo effect, as some people may get the impression. It has indeed been validated by many studies and surveys. However, when dealing with such cases, our scientific community is rather limited in its analysis and usually can only see the effects, since we don't have yet technology to research this field of study in depth (because it involves subatomic energies and other profound aspects). But, for sure it's not magic, there are physical laws behind these healings no doubt about this, it's just that our present scientific instruments cant grasp them yet in full. (You will find some interesting studies if you research further this domain)Let's take Falun Gong as an example. According to its teachings, healing illnesses is only a small side effect of the cultivation practice, but it won't work at all like normal medical treatment or sports and should not be analyzed from this standpoint. It involves things such as your state of mind, your enlightenment quality, eliminating bad notions, purification with high energy matter etc. Of course, you can always seek normal medical treatment if you have difficulties in applying its principles, there is no restriction in this regard (as claimed by some people after the suppression began in order to discredit the practice). So, going back to our story. Falun Gong was the most popular practice in China Qigong Society. It was so appreciated at that time that, for example, the Government - through its consulates - supported the establishing of Falun Gong clubs in US universities. The situation gets complicatedThe situation got complicated in 1995 when officials from the Chinese Communist Party wanted to set up CCP branches inside Falun Gong and charge a membership fee. The founder of the practice, Mr. Li Honghzi, rejected the demand and a year later parted ways with China Qigong Society. Why? Because he claimed that Falun Gong is a righteous spiritual practice, so making it into a money earning tool or a political CCP branch wasn't really an option. This would have fundamentally affected the nature and effectiveness of the practice. After this decision, as Falun Gong popularity was growing, a constant streem of harassment began. As quoran Albert Yue, a Chinese resercher, pointed out in his answer to What were the motives behind the persecution of Falun Gong? there were three key figures that designed the crackdown tactics - the CCP leader at that time, Jiang Zemin, security tsar Lou Gan and his brother-in-law, Marxist professor He Zouxiu, and they all had personal reasons and aspirations to get involved in this highly problematic affair. The publication of Falun Gong books by state printing presses was banned shortly after their being listed as bestsellers. Attempts to register under various government organizations were denied. Sporadic articles began appearing in state-run news outlets smearing Falun Gong. Security agents began monitoring practitioners and occasionally dispersing outdoor meditation sessions. In April 1999, the escalating harassment culminated in several dozen practitioners being beaten and arrested in Tianjin. (source)What happened in Tianjin exactly? The Marxist professor He Zuoxiu wrote an article in a local newspaper attacking Falun Gong. This action targeted a peacefull protest that was violently repressed by the authorities and 45 practitioners were arrested. After the incident, many practitioners went to appeal to Tianjin Government for the release of their imprisoned colleagues, but they were told that “the orders had come from Beijing“ and that they should resolve the issue there. (Lou Gan, He Zouxiu’s relative, was in charge of China’s police). As a matter of fact, the Tianjin magazine accepted practitioners’ opinion and promised to correct He Zouxiu’s info, but the order from Beijing forced them also to change their position. So, directed by Tianjin officials, the practitioners went to Beijing. On April 25, over 10,000 adherents gathered quietly outside the national petitions office in Beijing, adjacent to the Zhongnanhai government compound, asking for an end to abuses and recognition of their right to practice. Premier Zhu Rongji took an appeasing stance toward Falun Gong. He was prepared to resolve the grievances. He met with several of the petitioners’ representatives. The practitioners in Tianjin were released and those in Beijing went home. (source)So, the harassment led by central officials directed by Luo Gan sparked the protest in the first place. The practitioners that went to Beijing acted civilized, they didn't have political ambitions, they didn't challenge the CCP authority, nor did they have any slogans or banner against the Government. On the contrary, they were just calling for help, in accordance with the Chinese laws. After premier Zhu Rongji’s intervention, the official news agency Xinhua pointed out that there is no issue and there would be no consequences, case closed. Except it wasn’t.Jiang orders the begining of the persecutionAs the foreign media was praising the prime-minister for the wise and peacefull way he dealt with this large protest, then-Party chief Jiang Zemin went completely mad. He called Falun Gong a serious challenge to the regime’s authority, “something unprecedented in the country since its founding 50 years ago.”In the meeting of the Politburo Standing Committee (the top CCP ruling structure), other leaders argued against starting a campaign against Falun Gong, but Jiang imposed his own will and issued the order to “disintegrate” Falun Gong.Jiang Zemin became the paramount leader of Party, administration, and army through political opportunities offered by the former leader, Deng Xiaoping. Jiang clearly recognized the fact that there were many senior cadres who exceeded him in political capital and talent, and that those cadres would not recognize him, except as a political opportunist. At the time Jiang took the stage, Deng Xiaoping had appointed Hu Jintao as the leader to succeed Jiang. This was a rare event in the history of the Chinese Communist Party. So, because of his obstinate desire for power and personal jealousy, Jiang felt extremely threatened by the international praise that Premier Zhu Rongji had received for peacefully handling the 4.25 appeal at Zhongnanhai and the warm welcome that Falun Gong and its founder had received in China and abroad.According to the tradition of the Chinese Communist Party, the most effective tactic to strengthen power and to eliminate political enemies is to launch a political movement. In every political movement in communist history, some people are isolated from the public as "a minority", and then accused of various crimes and targeted for elimination. It appeared to Jiang that Falun Gong practitioners were appropriate candidates to target for his political movement.According to a document exposed after the event, in 2000, Jiang proclaimed, "Falun Gong believes in Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance, which provide us an opportunity to 'eliminate the poison'. In contrast, other Qigong groups are not easy to handle and may possibly cause violent disturbances in the nation. They may even commit homicide, apply poison gas, or make bombs as well other terrorist activities. Falun Gong believes in 'Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance' so our crackdown can be easily conducted."CNN Chinese Affairs Analyst Willy Lam pointed out in an article entitled, "The High Price of the Crackdown in China," that some members of the Politburo actually did not support the persecution. This is no longer a secret. The article also cited a quote by a senior member of the communist party, "Through launching this political movement, Jiang is forcing senior leaders to express obedience to his political agenda to elevate his power. Jiang Zemin thinks that even though the Politburo has different opinions about how to handle the issue of Falun Gong, its members must publicly express their support of him."To forcibly push for his persecution of Falun Gong in the Politburo, Jiang Zemin used another tactic: on one hand, he tried his best to describe Falun Gong as a political group supported by the "overseas anti-China force"; on the other hand, he claimed that Falun Gong competes with the communist party for the hearts and minds of the people. (the principles Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance have nothing to do with the violance and strugle theory of Marxism).Threatened with the "Annihilation of the Party", other members of the Politburo became silent and yielded to Jiang, even though they did not support the persecution. In addition, Jiang Zemin brought up fabricated charges that Falun Gong was a political group that was supported by the "overseas anti-China forces." He also realized another personal goal and managed to kill two birds with one stone. His personal decision to persecute Falun Gong practitioners would take on a special meaning--after the success of the persecution, he would become the person who saved the Party during a crisis and would therefore be given an important position in the history of Chinese Communist Party. Thus, the persecution of Falun Gong provided a golden opportunity for Jiang, who lacked and wanted to accumulate political capital and strengthen his position. (source)As we can see, Jiang’s political ambitions were a decisive factor in this context. Thus, once Jiang made the decision and asserted his will over other members of the Politburo Standing Committee, there was little to stop what came next. Over the following months, Jiang and leaders like Luo began making preparations for a campaign to wipe out Falun Gong.Lacking legal authority and fearing the popularity of Falun Gong even among members of the security forces, Jiang created a special Party leadership group and related extralegal, plainclothes security force to lead the fight. Established on June 10, 1999, it came to be known as the 6-10 Office. In July 1999, a full-scale campaign reminiscent of the Cultural Revolution was launched. The full weight of the CCP’s repressive apparatus was turned on Falun Gong. (source)Jiang’s policy regarding Falun Gong sounded terrifying: ruin their reputation, bankrupt them financially, and eliminate them physically. It turned upside down the lives of tens of millions of innocent Chinese people. Its important to note that a year prior to the beginning of the persecution, in 1998, Falun Gong was officially investigated and Qiao Shi, the former chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, concluded that “Falun Gong has hundreds of benefits for the Chinese people and nation, and does not a bit of harm”.Intresting to note that Jiang also had a personal problem with Qiao Shi, whom he took as his political enemy and tended to be against whatever he supported. However, that investigation halted at least temporarily the beginning of the crackdown that some hardliners in the security apparatus, including Luo Gan, had been agitating for.Seen in this light, the incident in Tianjin set up by Lao Gan and He Zouxiu that resulted in the large protest in Beijing (because practitioners were sent there by the authorities on purpose) was a situation set up for Jiang Zemin, so that he can make use as of it as an excuse for the crackdown. Which he did.Justifying the persecution in front of the Chinese peopleHow do you make a practice that has an excellent reputation around the country for years, and is followed by tens of millions, public enemy number one? The “ruin their reputation“ policy had to go into full play.Demonizing propaganda flooded the airwaves, and the media was inundated with fabricated stories about CIA connections, people dying because of the practice (the allegaed 1400 deths), the self immolation incident from Tiananmen that was broadcasted on national TV continuously for a long period of time (a despicable hoax that was debunked - see http://falsefire.com and 54 Facts That Reveal How the 'Self-Immolation' on Tiananmen Square Was Actually Staged for Propaganda Purposes - ) etc. (In fact, at a UN conference in 2001, the International Educational Development Committee accused Jiang’s regime of “state terrorism“ and pointed out that, judging from the close analysis of the video of the incident, the self-immolation from Tiananmen was clearly staged.)One after another, slanderous stories about Falun Gong profoundly affected Chinese society at all levels, from government agencies to private enterprises, the educational system, and community organizations. We are talking about interviews with fake practitioners saying crazy things, fake teachings being spread around among the people who practiced to confuse them, wild stories about the founder, stories about people coming suicide to go to ”Heaven” or killing their young children and loved ones (whoever has read the Falun Gong teachings knows that committing suicide or murder is considered a major sin and it's forbidden) etc. And this went on for many years. The media had to go by Jiang’s policy - ruin their reputation - and of course the arguments and defence of the founder of Falun Gong or that of the true practitioners weren't presented to the public. In this context, in which many Chinese people couldn't verify the info in the media firsthand, over time the campaign had achieved indeed the effect of turning a large number of people against their own innocent fellow countrymen. Unfortunately. But, I don't judge these people, I completely understand them, it's normal to be misled in such complicated circumstances. The apparatus build by Jiang and Ji Jinping’s approachJiang Zemin had the impression that such a peaceful group would immediately collapse, and wanted to “eradicate Falun Gong in three months“. But things didn't go as planned, so he intensified the campaign. As time went by and Falun Gong was still resisting, he built an entire apparatus of eradication and placed his own people in key positions so as to ensure that the campaign would continue after he was gone from power and that he won't be held accountable for his crimes. And he indeed achieved this effect. The next leaders could not do anything about it even if they wanted to.But now, as the present CCP leader Xi Jinping is consolidating his power more and more, things are changing, and it has become quite obvious for political observers. It seems he is eradicating Jiang’s men one by one under the umbrella of an anti-corruption campaign. And we are talking about officials from all levels including people that seemed intangible and had major roles in the persecution such as former member of the Politburo Bo Xilai, the ex-security tsar Zhou Yongkang, the head of the 610 Office etc.So, bottom line is that the current regime led by Xi Jinping has not persecuted Falun Gong and it's not his wish to do so. In fact, quite the opposite, Xi is not only purging many of the key officials that are involved in the persecution but has also abolished the labor camp system where many of the inmates were Falun Gong practitioners. All in all, he is having a positive effect judging from the perspective of Falun Gong practitioners, who don't blame him for the persecution, as they are perfectly aware that it was Jiang’s personal campaign and he just inherited the idiotic burden. This aspect can be clearly seen from the way The Epoch Times or NTDTV - media channels established by Falun Gong practitioners - are reporting on this issue. However, all people who are accustomed to Chinese politics know that until Xi has gained full control of power in China there are still many things that he can't do as he pleases at the moment. So, in the meantime, many officials just blindly follow the initial policy issued by Jiang Zemin without thinking further and seen that the context is changing, while others have realized it an have stopped participating and sustaining the persecution. As The Epoch Times notes:The faction with bloody hands—the officials former CCP head Jiang Zemin promoted in order to carry out the persecution—is seeking to avoid accountability for their crimes and to continue the campaign. Other officials are refusing any longer to participate in the persecution. Events present a clear choice to the officials and citizens of China, as well as people around the world: either support or oppose the persecution of Falun Gong. History will record the choice each person makesSpeaking from a broader angle, the situation put in place by Jiang Zemin is quite complicated. The Party now finds itself trapped. If it backs down, it would have to admit to a mistake that ruined millions of lives and tore apart families. If it stays the course, then with each day that passes, another Falun Gong practitioner is abducted, another judge imprisons an innocent person, another police officer learns he can torture with impunity. The effect on the rule of law and the Party’s legitimacy is corrosive. (source)So, Xi Jinping finds himself in a difficult situation. He can't quite easily announce publicly the end of the persecution. And while the official order wasn't issued and his approach is rather to eliminate Jiang’s men, the deadly mechanism set in place by Jiang is still working like clockwork. However, set aside different individual political leaders, if we honestly assess the history of the CCP, we can see that this regime - as a whole - is responsible for many such brutal campaigns against innocent Chinese people, and I am pointing this out with respect for the 5.000 years of Chinese civilization. In fact, even Xi Jinping himself was persecuted in the 1960s, as well as Hu Jintao&Wen Jiabao's fathers. What was Falun Gong’s reaction to the persecution? From the very beginning, Falun Gong practitioners tried to stop the persecution using peaceful means. As Charles McCalister pointed out, Falun Gong's activism went through a number of stages. At the begining, they didn't target or denounce Jiang Zemin as they do now. They wrote letters, lodged appeals, petitioned - etc. The usual fare. Later, they came out against Jiang Zemin when it became clear that the persecution was a personal crusade that he seemed he'd committed himself to, and was simply not going to change, and only after 5/6 years of fruitless effort did they start directly calling out the CCP (when the crimes commited had already passed the point of no return). Some people mistakenly label their normal reaction in front of such crimes as ”getting political”, which is a false conception in my opinion. They just want to expose and stop the crimes that they are subjected to. Should they stay idle and let their loved ones be brutally persecuted or killed? Denouncing the abuses seems in fact the only way out of such complicated situations. What effect did they achieve through their efforts?Something few observers would have foreseen in 1999 has also occurred - Falun Gong has survived, some would say is thriving, and now some Chinese officials are on the defensive. Tens of millions of people still practice Falun Gong in China and some have taken it up recently, performing quiet meditative exercises in private and incorporating the core tenets of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance into their daily lives. After nearly two decades of making phone calls, printing homemade leaflets, or distributing VCDs to counter vilifying state propaganda and educate fellow citizens about the abuses occurring in their own backyards, Falun Gong’s grassroots outreach efforts are bearing fruit. Hundreds of lawyers defend Falun Gong practitioners, argue their innocence in court, and challenge the legality of their persecution. Thousands of Chinese people who do not practice Falun Gong are signing petitions to call for the release of fellow citizens who do. Police in some locales actively protect Falun Gong residents or refuse to arrest them.Meanwhile, top security officials like Zhou Yongkang, who terrorized millions, are sitting behind bars. The campaign’s ultimate mastermind, former CCP head Jiang Zemin, is the subject of over 170,000 criminal complaints lodged with Chinese prosecutors since May 2015. At this critical moment, Chinese people in growing numbers are peacefully taking steps to defy the Party’s persecutory policies. (The Diplomat)And not only the practitioners in China are trying to clarify the true situation regarding this persecution, but also the ones around the globe since Falun Gong is now practiced in over 110 countries. You can see peaceful protests, appeals, and informational activities in front of the Chinese Embassies and Consulates, at the headquarters of the United Nation and the European Parliament, in tourist spots where Chinese people go, in Chinatowns, in the media etc. A large number of Chinese people that traveled overseas have interacted with them and have learned the truth about Falun Gong and Jiang Zemin’s shameful campaign. Such non-violent methods can indeed be effective. There is yet another interesting aspect of Falun Gong’s activism.Being spiritual people, the practitioners sincerely believe in the principle of karmic retribution, or the so-called law of cause and effect that most people probably have heard of since its present in most cultures (and religions). As they see it, the Chinese Communist Party will be held accountable for the brutal crimes commited against them, including the massive “medical genocide“ set up by Jiang - a large scale forced organ harvasting industry, as wild as this may sound (see here the evidence), and so they advice its members (Party, Youth League or Young Pioneers) to part ways with it so as to ensure their safety. This spiritual component of their activism - which in essence can be viewed as an act of compassion and responsibility - is likely to confuse some people when judged from outside their frame of mind and starting point. In fact, even judging things from the standpoint of a person that doesn't have spiritual beliefs but has a conscience and solid moral values, its not dignified to be associated with an organisation that did so much harm to its own people, not to mention to take an oath to give and dedicate your life to it.History will set things straightAt present, Falun Gong is cherished by millions around the globe and has received over 3,000 awards for its mental and health benefits, its founder beeing a 5 time Noble Peace Prize Nominee. The “evil cult” story promoted by Jiang Zemin didn't have a chance overseas despite all the propaganda efforts.Although the media in China is mostly silent now about the ongoing persecution, the apparatus build by Jiang is still functioning, but not at full force as in the old days, since the context has changed. However, persecution cases unfortunately appear on a daily basis and many families are ruined as we speak. In these 19 years of persecution that passed from 20 of July 1999 so many innocent Chinese people have lost their lives or suffered severe persecution in this brutal campaign.China is a great country, and for sure this dark chapter of history will come to an end at one point and the criminals will face justice, while Falun Gong’s reputation will be rehabilitated.History will set things straight.I will finish my long answer with some photos of Falun Gong practitioners around the world:
