Which is the best way to prepare for SAT, ACT and Advanced Placement (AP)?

Well, I know the pain of going through the phase of college application which includes preparation of SAT, ACT and APs. Being an AP Physics & SAT Math faculty at Masterclass Space, helping students in test preparation world over and having produced many perfect scorers, I thought of sharing my experience which would be of great help to students and parents in making the test prep journey smooth. Luckily, I found this question and through the answer, I am sharing the most useful strategies, tips and ways to prepare for SAT, ACT & APs. Though I teach Math, Calculus, Statistics & Physics courses, I could write all the answers with the help of my highly knowledgeable team who are alumni of elite universities. At the end of this answer, I have shared Discount Code and 1 Week Free Demo Class link, so keep reading & take benefit :)SATSAT Math:SAT Math test has four content areas: Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Topics in Math.To start with preparation, take a diagnostic test under timed conditions and score the test. You can use SAT Score Calculator[1] to get a scaled score out of 1600.Talking about the Math section. Start analysing your test. Wherever you are doing mistakes, pick up that topic and start practising from test prep books. I personally prefer books by Nielson Phu for my students as its standard is really high and by thoroughly practising that book, many of my students have got a perfect score.Memorize all the formulas and math facts. It will save your time and give accuracy. Many times, SAT Math questions are wordy, you will see a small story which has no relevance in solving the question. It looks frightening but believe me, all lengthy questions are easy to solve. Just concentrate on the data, not on story.Few Strategies:1) Picking Number: If you feel it’s time taking to solve algebra question, pick up numbers and replace with variables. Because it is easy to solve arithmetic than algebra.2) Back Solving: If the solution seems complicated, be smart. Pick options and put back in the question to see which one works. It may work many times when you are stuck 😊SAT Verbal:How to ace score in SAT Reading and Writing is one of the most nerve-wracking queries. Mentoring for more than a decade, a core faculty of Verbal at Masterclass Space has put forward many aspirants, and his mantra, tips & tricks helped aspirants seizing the high score. Everyone has anxiety related to the syllabus, study material, and a disciplined pattern of study. Many test-takers lag behind margin points that rack them so they need a last-minute strategy to avoid slipping. Here is the strategy that will help the students achieving their desired score. The best preparation begins with the best analysis. If test-takers do not know what they have picked to strengthen himself or herself, they will fire in the dark that is called half-baked and the half-baked preparation leads to low score so the first strategy is to analyse through the mock test. After getting the analysis, the test-takers should decide three steps. If a test-taker has very poor performance, he/she should start with the books such as SAT ELITE, The Vocabulary Builder Workbook by Magoosh, especially for vocabulary building, and Barron’s for very basics. After going through these, he/she should start doing sectional mock tests and prepare the report card of the performance. Analysing the report card, he/she should go for further steps. If the test-taker has performed average in the mock test, he/she should start with tests. To attempt tests, these books such as Princeton Review, Kaplan SAT Prep, and The Official SAT Study Guide can be followed. If a test-taker is struggling particularly in reading, he/she can follow The Critical Reader and to brush up on grammar, he/she can go through Cambridge Advanced English Grammar. If the test-taker has done desirable performance and still lagging in the score, he/she should draw a few strategies: strategies related to time management, difficult question handling, and guessed based tips.ACTACT Math:The syllabus of ACT is more than SAT but the difficulty level of questions is less than SAT. In ACT you need to solve 60 questions in 60 mins so you need speed with accuracy. Though Calculator is permitted, you should try to solve most of the questions without a calculator by doing the mental calculation. I make my students practice mental calculations. It is preferable to memorize multiplication table up to 20 for fast calculation. At Masterclass Space, we refer two Math books for ACT apart from our study material – Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT by Richard F. Corn & The College Panda's ACT Math: Advanced Guide and Workbook. These two books done under proper guidance can give you 34+ score in Math. The strategies mentioned for SAT Math are same for ACT Math also.ACT Science:ACT Science section is the one hurdle which freaks out most of the students. It is because you get just 35 mins to answer 40 questions. It is a misconception that you need to know science to do well in ACT Science section. Science section tests your ability to interpret graphs, table, data, and different viewpoints. It is completely okay if you have not studied physics or chemistry. You are not expected to remember formulas or equations. Everything will be given in the passage.ACT Science section contains six or seven passages. There are three types of passages – data representation, research summary and conflicting viewpoints. To master the section, always practice under timed conditions. Best is to start with Official ACT Practice Tests. You should take at least 6-7 practice tests before attempting real ACT.ACT English & ACT Reading:Although the pattern of questions for SAT and ACT Verbal is different, their concept is almost the same that is why preparation strategy is similar but study materials are different.I am going to share the strategy that will help the students acquiring their target score. If a test taker performed below the mark, he/she should start with the books such as Up Your Score: ACT: The Underground Guide, Princeton Review’s Premium ACT Prep, and in case of vocabulary shortage, The Vocabulary Builder Workbook by Magoosh. After going through these, he/she should start doing sectional mock tests and prepare the report card of the performance. Analyzing the report card, he/ she should move to the next steps. If the test taker has performed average in the mock test, he/she should start with tests. To attempt tests, these books such as Erica Meltzer's The Complete Guide to ACT English, especially for English, and The Complete Guide to ACT Reading, especially for reading, can be used.If the test-taker has done desirable performance but could not touch the dream line, he/she should draw a few strategies: strategies related to time management, difficult question handling, and guessing based tips.He/she can follow The ACT Black Book, very helpful in making strategy and Official ACT Prep Guide for practice.Advanced Placement Courses:AP Physics 1/ AP Physics C:AP Physics is a college-level course. It requires in-depth knowledge of the subject to ace it. AP Physics C is calculus-based while AP Physics 1 is the algebra-based course. Many prefer to use the book by Douglas C. Giancoli - Physics - Principles with Applications for AP Physics 1 and Princeton Review’s Cracking the AP Physics C Exam. As far as the course curriculum is considered, these are really good books.Last academic year, my all the students got 5/5 in AP Physics. Actually, I take students in much depth than the way physics is taught in schools. I ask my students to study from Fundamentals of Physics textbook by David Halliday, Robert Resnick, and Jearl Walker. This is one brilliant book which explains concepts in-depth and gives plenty of questions to practice. I maintain their interest by motivating them to ask very logical questions which I kept answering. I use mind-blowing website - Physics Stack Exchange to give the best explanation possible. I also use Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov to take some very high-level questions which are much above AP level. This level of preparation keeps no room to lose even 1 point.AP Chemistry:Genuinely, nothing beats the official test papers because they have those questions which we actually would be facing in the exam. However, they must be attempted once the syllabus is complete, and we want to finally gauge our preparation. Some very important links, you can search on google.AP Chemistry Previous years papers from 1999-2013AP Chemistry Previous years papers from 2014-2018AP Chemistry Previous year paper of 2019Review Books for Practice used by Masterclass Space:For practice, these books have the excellent theory and practice questions:AP Chemistry Prep by The Princeton ReviewBarron’s AP Chemistry5 Steps to A 5 by McGraw HillAP Chemistry Practice Questions by Sterling Test PrepReference Books We Recommend:Atkins' Physical Chemistry: International Eleventh Edition by Peter Atkins, Julio de PaulaConcise Inorganic Chemistry by J.D. LeeAP Calculus AB/BC:AP Calculus AB covers 3 Big Ideas – Limits, Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. AP Calculus BC covers one additional Big Idea – Sequence and Series and also some more advanced topics within other three Big Ideas.Few tipsYou should find a good graphing calculator and familiarize yourself well with its functions. You should always practice keeping timer.Practice showing steps, how you arrived at the answer. There is partial credit for that also.Memorize formulas as no formula sheet is given in the exam.BooksApart from the most common book used which is Cracking the AP Calculus AB & BC Exams by Princeton Review, I use and recommend my students these booksFor AP Calculus AB - Calculus: Single Variable by Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallumFor AP Calculus BC - Calculus of a Single Variable by Larson, Hostetler, EdwardsAP Statistics:We follow the book by Daren S. Starnes, Josh Tabor -The Practice of Statistics as standard. But there are many more resources which we recommend like Statistics and Probability website - stattrek.com. It has tutorials and fast-paced videos which our students use frequently. You should check out https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-statistics/exam website for questions and guidelines of how to answer FRQs. You do not have to remember formulas but you should know how to use them. You will be given the formula sheet in the test. Make yourself well acquainted with statistical operations on the graphing calculator.Reason of Why Our Students Score High in SAT, ACT & AP:Masterclass Space[2] is a passion-driven education company working globally which believes in giving very in-depth knowledge of the subject. Superficial knowledge or hit and trial or go by option is not our way of teaching. Our courses are exhaustive and we consider only high-profile and experienced faculties who come from top universities (only from IIT, IIM, BITS-Pilani & Top US Universities) to be part of a team. From my personal experience, most of the students have calibre but lack focus. We recommend them to practice meditation to be calm. I teach Jose Silva The Mind Control Method to my students and their feedback is amazing. We have seen a huge improvement in very mediocre students also. Whichever way suits, you should practice meditation or play classical music or involve in some creative activity which enhances your focus.I have tried to share tips, strategies and best resources through this answer. Are the NISM exams tough?

National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) is an Indian public trust and an educational institute and staff college of SEBI established in 2006 by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) the regulator for the securities market in India. The institute has a flagship programme which is Post Graduate Programme in Securities Market , certification programmes, academic programmes, training programmes, capacity building and skill development programmes in securities markets. The institute also provides financial education and standards to improve financial literacy in the country. The institute is located in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, India. A 72-acre campus at Patalganga (off-Mumbai-Pune Expressway), for the institute, was inaugurated by Narendra Modi, incumbent Prime Minister of India, on 24 December 2016. NISM is an powerful autonomous body governed by a Board of Governors. Ajay Tyagi, the Chairman of SEBI, is the incumbent chairman of NISM. Shri SK Mohanty, Whole Time Member, SEBI has taken additional charge as the Director of NISM. The Institute is divided into six schools that address the different participants of the Indian financial market. What does the NISM offer? The NISM campus in Patalganga (Maharashtra) offers two full-time courses in Finance. The first one is PGPSM (Post Graduate Programme in Securities Markets) and the other is PGD (Post Graduate Diploma) in FinTech.Apart from these two stated courses, NISM also offers a few other long term courses in collaboration with international bodies.Further, there are 22 short term certification courses offered by NISM. In this article, we would predominantly hold a discussion on these certifications. A majority of these short term courses are mandated by SEBI for those who are either self-employed like an investment advisor or research analyst or working in the Financial Services industry in India. The rests are voluntary certifications that have not been mandatory for the finance professionals. But, the voluntary certifications are beneficial in the sense that they provide advanced knowledge in some specific area. For example, Mutual Fund Distributors Certification Examination (Series V C) is a voluntary exam but its contents and way of testing the candidates is more difficult than other Mutual Funds exams. How to register for a NISM certification exam?In order to register for any course offered by NISM, you first need to create your account on the NISM website. Click on this link and it will take you to the home page of the website. While creating your account, make sure you have a digital copy of your photograph, aadhar card and PAN card with you. After you are done with the account creation, you can choose any module of your choice. To register for any module exam, you have to select the exam date, time and center first. After that, it will take you to the payment gateway.Once you have paid the required exam fees, you would get the soft copy of the workbook (study material) and the hall ticket in your account. Take a physical printout of your hall ticket and carry it with you to the exam center on the day of your exam. How are the contents of NISM courses? The NISM provides the students with soft copies of the study materials in the ‘pdf’ format. The content covers both theoretical and practical aspects of the Financial Markets. These courses teach you various jargons which you need to know for pursuing a career in the Financial Markets.Anyways, you can also enroll in these courses if you are simply interested in gaining knowledge. These programmes teach you the key theoretical concepts of the Stock Market, Mutual Fund, Financial Planning, and many others. The exams are based on MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) and the students are tested on their conceptual understanding. Although you don’t get the opportunity to work on demo projects here, you certainly get the chance to solve case study questions in the exams. Further, you cannot carry a scientific calculator in the exam. But, you are definitely allowed to do rough works in MS Excel, OpenOffice or digital calc on the given desktop in the exam hall. The NISM certification exams majorly focus on the practical understanding rather than emphasizing on mugging up theories. The best feature of these certifications is that the course modules are updated in every year. How much time does it take for the completion of a NISM course? In case of a NISM certification examination, you don’t need any significant amount of time to complete the same unlike CA, CFA, or MBA (Finance). Practically speaking, you can book your exam slot at any time. However, it is recommended that you should prepare for at least two weeks to a month before taking any module exam. This is because when you register for an exam, you get the study material covering a minimum of 100 pages which needs a decent time for complete reading. If you are only looking to clear the exam, you can do the same by referring to the mock tests of private institutions. But, if you are looking to gain knowledge of the financial markets and clear the exams with distinction marks, you must study the workbooks given to you by NISM.What is the registration fee to be paid to opt for a NISM certification exam? The registration fee for any exam is pretty reasonable in nature. Here, you don’t need to pay over 30 or 40 thousand rupees to write a semester of MBA or a level exam in CFA.Today, you can register in a NISM exam for as low as Rs 1200. The module exam with the highest registration fee is Rs 3000. Whenever you are enrolling for an exam of NISM, you have to pay the required fees. If you are unable to attempt that exam or fail in the same, you have to pay the same fee again for re-appearing in the exam. How’s the difficulty level of a NISM exam? The difficulty level of the NISM exams is between average to moderately high. For some exams, the contents and way of testing could be more difficult than the rests. The NISM Investment Advisor Exams (Level 1 and 2) contain relatively more practical contents as compared to the other courses. On the other hand, exams like the NISM (Series VI) Depository Operations Certification Examination contain a very high share of theory portion in their syllabus. In order to pass a module, you need to secure a minimum of 60% score in most of the module exams. Besides, these exams come with negative marking of 25% per question. A very few exams like NISM (Series V A) Mutual Funds Distributors Certification Examination have a minimum passing marks criteria of 50% and also they don’t have any negative marking feature. You can take the help of test prep training for practice papers as they provide good resources.

I want to practise more questions for the JEE Mains to make my concepts more clear, but I’m not getting any idea. What are some suggestions?

I am assuming that you already have finished your topic wise sheet or workbooks and question bank. Solving questions monotonously from a single topic or chapter is not advantageous as we know that we have nearly 90 chapters to cover in jee mains.I would suggest you to join a test series. If you don’t want to spend money Allen has recently announced Drill test series for jee mains and advanced which is completely free of cost. MHRD has also launched National test Abhyaas app on which you will have access to free mock tests (these two test series are available at the time of writing this answer i.e for jee mains 2020).Once you attempt 2–3 tests ,assess your performance and try to figure out which are the chapters or topics in which you are constantly failing to score. Then practice those topics and solve questions from standard books such as DC pandey for physics,New Pattern from Arihant publication for maths etc. You can also ask for the DPP’s shared to your friends who are enrolled in other coaching institutes. Try to practice from resources which have detailed solution given for each problem. In this way you don’t have to look for others for solutions and also you will get another approach of attempting the problem by seeing authors solution which may be more efficient and well organised from your conventional way of solving that particular type of problems. If you are comfortable with the concepts and want to practice more problems in order to improve your speed and accuracy i would suggest you to attempt more and more full length tests. Also if you have an android phone you can join facebook and telegram groups related to jee preparations in which many students discuss problems and moreover coaching institutes and youtube educators post some really good problems. In this way you will have access to random problems from different topics and varied difficulty. Also try to address the doubts and questions posted by your friends there, as it will benefit both you and them.
