They are not teaching how to respect other life forms. Animal abuse is a separate issue. That is a ummmm, genetic thing and if you ever hear of or find your kids abusing ANY animal (includes bar b que of slugs and insects, frying ants with a magnifying glass), setting fires whenever they get their hands on a lighter or matches…Get that kid some help. There is something that needs rewired or that kid will most likely become…a serial killer, an arsonist…Honest.‘Pests’? Pigeons are not pests. There are no life forms that deserve to be ‘dealt’ with. Like a weed is just a plant out of place, a pest is just an animal out of place. We humans are the ‘pests’. We barge in an take up valuable ecosystems for our own use and wipe out resources/habit that the animals always had. Until we took over.Even the adults need to take courses to become a Pesticide Applicator. Education about life around us is far more important for ‘pest’ control than we humans learning that only ‘we’ matter and insisting other animals and plants do as we tell them to do.I’ve been a licensed commercial pesticide applicator for 30 years. The Cooperative Extension (University) Services teach how to NOT AND NEVER use pesticides. How to PREVENT problems. Pesticides create problems. Home owners are far worse than commercial industry for pollution using pesticides. I kid you not!People have given birds a very bad rap using verbiage such as bird virus, ‘dirty’ birds. I have always owned birds, now I’ve an African Grey Parrot, for the past 15 years, got her when she was 13. They live 80 to 100 years. Her vocabulary is over 300 words as well as phrases. They only need to hear something once to mimic it. When she says something it is always meaningful; such as ‘peek a boo’ means she wants her blanket over her cage. She trained ME, grins!I’ve encouraged a family of Ravens by feeding them all of our scraps. Ravens are territorial. Ravens mate for life. Ravens host ‘great gatherings’ and Ravens have funerals. Breath taking birds. Brilliant birds. Crows…same Genus. Magpies, Myna birds, Blue Jays…all the same genus. Brilliant brilliant birds. To ignore birds is to miss out on one of the best ways to learn and accept other lifeforms being just as important as us humans. They truly are. I laugh when people insist we humans are the TOP dog of all life. Those people have not been educated. Period. Birds are NOT dirty never a pest.
