Ever since my son was born, I’ve been making dead baby jokes. Once he got old enough to understand what was going on, he started joining in and playing off of them, sometimes with elaborate pantomimes of him dying.I never got dead baby jokes before having a child. At that point, joking about him dying became a valid form of stress relief.Now that he’s grown, it’s a twisted way of reinforcing how much I care about him.That’s because for me, it wasn’t the shock value that made dead baby jokes appealing, it was the constant anxiety of worrying about having a dead baby myself, and that baby being my own baby, the love of my life.It was the fear of how unexpectedly that could occur that led to me thinking about the possibility of his death. That fear provoked me to make light of the phenomenon of babies that, without warning, without discernible cause, drop dead.It was laughter born of despair. It was laughter born of empathy, laughter born of pain at the fact that babies do die, even if mine survived. That’s a pain that can’t be borne, though people do bear it. It’s unimaginable.When faced daily with the possibility—with the reality—of the unimaginable, you can laugh or you can cry. I’ve always preferred laughter.And now? My baby’s alive. He’s thriving, in fact. Joking about dead babies together is a celebration of that.I feel the same way about racist jokes, and most other forms of offensive humor. If the joke comes from a place that acknowledges the tragedy that allows these jokes to be offensive, they can be legitimately funny, though the hint of tragedy behind them never goes away.Offensive jokes always highlight some very real cruelty of the world. When they highlight those realities in a way that tacitly or actively approves of those horrors, they’re generally not funny.But when the point of the joke, at its heart, is highlighting the fact that horrors are real, but that we, at least so far, are surviving and thriving in each other’s company? That’s funny. That makes me laugh, and it’s a real, joyous laughter that is totally free of bitterness and cynicism.Because there’s death. Because there’s hatred and injustice and violence.But there’s also us. And we’re okay.So, how would I respond? That all depends on the joke, and what was beneath it. If the person telling it was doing it in the right manner, I would certainly laugh, and know them for the beautifully honest person they are. If not, I’d lose respect for them gradually, and eventually stop talking to them.A person’s sense of humor is a fairly good indicator of who they are. All our hidden fears and prejudices come out there, as well as how we feel about those parts of ourselves.We can laugh to justify ourselves, to make ourselves feel bigger, to empathize or to express gratitude for what we haven’t had to face. We can laugh to highlight abuse or to excuse it. We can laugh to belittle suffering or express our solidarity.The details of the joke, where it came from in the person telling it, and what it created in me as a listener would all impact how I’d respond.Some offensive jokes bring me closer to people. Others make me despise them.
