Allow me to preface this by saying that I am 15 years old, and have moved plenty over the course of those fifteen years, having lived in many other places besides San Diego due to my fathers job (Navy). I currently live in east county, in a small rural town called Jamul, but I go to school in Chula Vista and spend a lot of time down in Imperial Beach and Coronado (so those areas are what I am most familiar with).There is no other place I can think of (at least within the United States) that has such a perfect mix of characteristics which, put together, make it this sort of paradise.The biggest plus-side for me is that, within just San Diego county, there is an almost absurd variety of different environments that you can experience.Love the water? Want to try your hand surfing? Lucky for you there’s a massive assortment of world class breaks (check out Blacks Beach and Scripps) How about some killer off roading? Head down to the Anza-Borrego desert and dirt-bike to your hearts content. How about getting a little more in touch with nature? Great hiking (and rock-climbing) up in Julian and Mission Valley. If warm-weather activities aren’t really your thing, you can check out Mt. Laguna (which has great sledding and skiing).These all within about an hour drive of each other.(Side note: how awesome would it be to do a day-trip where you go snowboarding in the morning, and surfing in the afternoon?)Besides that, the actual city of San Diego is nice. Great shopping and dining (Coronado’s fantastic for more of that “touristy” stuff), pretty much what you’d expect from a bigger city. I do believe that San Diego, in general, has a much more laid-back feel from cities like L.A. or San Francisco, I enjoy it, but it could both ways depending on your taste.I almost forgot to mention that the weather hovers, pretty consistently, around 70 degrees almost all year round.So if it wasn’t already made clear: I really, really love San Diego, and would recommend anyone reading this to visit.Edit:It was brought to my attention that I didn’t mention the prevelence of homelessness, among many other problems concerning the city of San Diego in my answer, and I think it is something extremely important to address that.I am aware that San Diego is far from perfect, and I didn’t intend to misrepresent it in this answer: though my experience, as well as that of the people I know, has been overall positive, it should be clear that that is not the case for everyone living here.

It is a geography and hydrology lession.200 hundred years ago the most important asset in California was water , that only fell out of the sky and was very limited. (Water is still pretty important even when we can spend 10’s of billions to lay down concrete and move it.)Current annual precipitation is 15 inches in LA and only 12 in SD. You can see the result of this over a million years or so; LA has broad plains the result of rivers eroding and flooding plains along each side of the Hollywood Hills. San Diego has some land along the river where irrigation could be used but it is very limited and the ability of agriculture to feed settlement was very consequently limited. The economy of California was primarily cattle but with no way to move herds either to Mexican or American population centers.The ability to create dams in the 19th century locally hardly improved the outlook.The center of California until well into the 20th century was in the north where there is 2 to 3 times as much rain and in the central valley rivers, real rivers that like the Nile turn the desert into Edens.The next big issue in development would be roads from the east and this is the reason that LA is more than 3 times the size of San Diego and if you lump LA, Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties together, they share the basin, and compare to San Diego and Imperial counties it is 7 fold or more.San Diego County is all mountains and hills and if you want to go east you build “The Impossible Railroad’. San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway - WikipediaThe first train across the mountains to El Centro from San Diego was not until 1919.Carrizo Gorge Trestle the world’s largest wooden railroad trestleSan Gorgonio Pass - Wikipedia which is only 2,600 feet gets you from LA to Arizona. It is the route that the Southern Pacific took to reach Yuma in 1875 and I-10, which replaced the famous Rte 66, takes now. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe reached LA in 1887 which meant that LA had 3 competing railroads San Francisco had only one and San Diego one or zero depending on if the tracks had washed out. Note tha LA replaces SF as the ccenter of California in the first half of the 20th Century before air-conditioning. Without AC San Mateo is much more livable than any part of LA more than 10 miles from the coast. LA has 3 competing railroads SF only the Union Pacific. We do not get much rain in California but what arrives likes to wash out mountain passes. The roads east and north from San Diego have a especially difficult time with the tropical storm that rides the Gulf of Baja California up to the border every 10 years or so and drops 10 inches of rain Texass tyle on California mountains. These storms have taken out Interstates. In the 1970’s I-* the interstate direct from SD to Arizona washed out for months.In 1900 LA had the railroads, the money, the agricultural land, the state and local power to build water projects and San Diego had a shallow harbor 90 miles closer to the Panama Canal and equidistant to Hawaii but farther from Japan and China as its only advantage over LA. LA had squat for a harbor but the sea is calm and you can build piers. And by 1909 there was a breakwater surrounding a deep harbor in San Pedro so San Diego’s only advantage was now a deficit.San Diego’s current advantage over Los Angeles can be summed up easily, “It is not Los Angeles and has 10 to 15 million fewer people depending on what you count as LA.”. That is a real plus however.If you look closer there are substantial individual differences.
