PDF Editor FAQ

What is Liverpool doing differently this season that allows them to perform better than they did in previous seasons like in the last decade or more?

This is a good question, and the answer is going to be very complicated.Let's go back a decade. Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool side of the 08-09 season was actually very good. They finished the season on eighty six points, which was enough to earn second place that year, but would have been enough to win the title in other years*. The incredible form of Manchester United, who went on a run of eleven straight wins in the second half of the season, was all that kept them from being champions.Unfortunately, Liverpool were owned at the time by the infamous “pair of cowboys” Tom Hicks and George Gillett. They had lied about their personal wealth in buying the club and broke promises to load the cost of the purchase onto the club accounts. This meant that the club was now liable to pay huge interest payments every year, rather than being able to invest in players. They also failed with plans to build a new stadium, despite promises to have work underway within six weeks of purchase in 2006, but not before they paid a company owned by Hicks millions of pounds to draw up new plans. The lack of proper funds meant Benitez was unable to strengthen the team in the way he wanted. Key players like Alonso were sold and not properly replaced. He was told he could only recruit new players by selling the others. For a club so close to the top, this was devastating and over the following years the team went into serious decline. Big money signings like Robbie Keane failed to make an impact, key players Gerrard and Torres both suffered long term injury problems, performances dipped, and Rafa eventually departed from the club. The board at the time was imbroiled in a series of fights between the two cowboys, with one another, with the banks who they had borrowed from to buy the club, and in Gillett’s case with a second bank he had made loans from using the club as collateral. It was clear that the ownership was likely to change and so Roy Hodgson was installed as manager as a short term measure. Hodgson is a respected coach with a long cv, who has been working around Europe for decades. His methods and tactics are well known, but by the time he took the Liverpool job, they were long out of date. He seemed to think that he was at a mid table club. He spoke publicly about his opinion that Liverpool players should be open to moves to bigger clubs like Manchester United, and suggested that Liverpool and Everton were on the same level. This was at a time when Liverpool were still the third or fourth richest club in the league, and it did not go well with the fans. Player recruitment had dropped off, with a squad that was clearly miles behind the top tier in terms of talent. Players like Konchesky, Poulsen and Jovanovic, who simply were not good enough, were lining up with players like Maxi Rodriguez and Raul Meireles, who Hodgson seemed to have little idea of how to use.The club was sold to NESV (which later changed its name to FSG) following a court battle in which Royal Bank of Scotland were able to force Hicks to sell.Hodgson was sacked and there we can begin to look at how the current Liverpool began. At first, club legend Kenny Dalglish took the reigns. He worked with respected analyst Damien Comolli to identify players to build a team around. An article written by Dalglish some months earlier seems to show the blueprint of what they had in mind. In it, he identified young Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll as a potent threat. Carroll, he observed, was scoring a lot of goals by getting onto the end of crosses played in from a deep position. Carroll was signed (in a move that involved the sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea) along with Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson. The plan was clearly to have Henderson and Downing provide crosses, and Adam provide corners, which Carroll could convert into goals.(The club also invested in a Uruguayan striker from Ajax, and we will hear more about him shortly.)So much for the plan. Unfortunately, Carroll was prone to injury, and seemed to struggle for fitness when he was not injured. Downing failed to provide assists, despite still ranking high on the clearly flawed “chance creation” stats. Henderson was trying to adapt to a different role at a much bigger club, and Adam's corners, for some reason, didn't often make the grade.Nonetheless, this was a huge improvement on the Hodgson era, and Dalglish delivered a League Cup trophy before he was moved on.The brightest sign in the team at the time was the Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, and under the guidance of new manager Brendan Rodgers, Suarez became the best player in the league. Rodgers was an exciting young coach, who had guided Welsh minnows Swansea City to playing stylish, attractive attacking football in the Premier League. He was quick to put his own stamp on the team, and the all out attacking football he unleashed was spectacular.Rodgers felt that every touch of the ball should be part of the build up to a goal. His defence often took enormous risks which didn't always pay off, but his team tended to win despite conceding. In the 13/14 season, with Suarez in the form of his life, Daniel Sturridge scoring for fun, Steven Gerrard discovering a new role at the base of midfield, and the emerging Raheem Sterling contributing, the club came within a whisker of winning the title.Although much is made of Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea in one of the last games of the season, many felt it was the absence of a mature and influential Jordan Henderson from the run in that eventually saw Liverpool lose out to Manchester City’s galactico style oil state team. With Suarez leaving the club following several controversies, and for a record fee, and Sturridge struck down by injury, the club had effectively lost the top two strikers in the league in one season. The back ups and replacements were never going to be at the same level, and the side lost its mojo.Rodgers felt he was not getting the players he wanted, and whether it was him or the scouting department, there were clearly a few square pegs in round holes. Despite playing a high line, the keeper, Simon Mignolet, was clearly not a natural sweeper. It was never clear where Emre Can was meant to fit. Balotelli and Benteke seemed to be the right players at the wrong club.Rodgers was eventually dismissed and replaced with Jurgen Klopp.Klopp has had a few years to build his team. With the proper financial support, and a scouting and recruitment system that is working towards a common goal he has been able to build a team and a squad to put his plans into action on the pitch. You can read elsewhere about his tactics, but the key to this season has been the defence.Getting the sweeper keeper in has been transformative. Alisson Becker is one of the greatest in the world, as you would expect from the fee, but even with Loris Karius in goal, Liverpool had become a much tougher side to score against. The arrival of Virgil Van Dijk has been extremely important here, too. A vocal and commanding presence at the back, quick and perceptive, many are now seeing Van Dijk among the best defenders in the world. Crucially, Klopp was prepared to wait six months to sign Van Dijk after Southampton made a complaint over earlier contact. In other years, the club might have tried to sign a second choice. In a similar scenario, Naby Keita was signed a year before making the move to Liverpool. He and Fabinho are now giving the midfield a new dimension, after being gradually eased into the team. And of course that forward line just keeps on scoring goals. It is so hard to defend against a player with the pace and movement of Salah, especially when you also have the trickery of Firmino and the power of Mane to deal with. Roberto Firmino is the architect. Even if he does not get directly involved in play, he is always there, pulling defenders out of position and making space for the others. The addition of Shaqiri gives a whole different dimension. The whole unit is almost impossible to play against, while the back line is almost impossible to score against.Football simply does not get much better than this, and what is really impressive is that Liverpool are doing this now, when most predicted that Manchester City would be dominant for the next five years. But for all of that, this Liverpool team have won nothing yet. There is half of the season left, and Liverpool fans know all too well that being on top is not the same as winning.*Some projections estimate that eighty six points might not be enough for fourth place this year!

Why aren't FSG sacking BR after all these disastrous games?

It was their decision to stick with Brendan Rodgers after a thorough review process before the start of the season. If they decide to sack him now after just 5 games into the season, it would make it look like a hasty knee-jerky decision. They would naturally give him a few more games to get things going again. The decision to whether sack him or not involves monetory factor as well, since they'd have to pay Rodgers approx. £10m in compensation if they are to sack him. They don't care about the results as much as the "real" hardcore fans do. As fans, we want results every game. But from the perspective of an owner/investor who might not really be an ardent fan of the club, would of course want us to do well, but wouldn't really be bothered about it in an emotional context as much as the fans who've been following the club since long. They would naturally be more patient than us aggressive, passionate fans.To extend on the previous point - for them Liverpool F.C is a business. If they're generating good revenues and are improving on that front every year, that is success to them. The below listed are the financial results from last year :Revenue increased by 19% to £255.6mMedia revenue increased by 46% to £100.9mCommercial revenue increased by 5% to £103.8mProfit before tax for was £0.9m compared to a 2013 loss of £49.8mMoved up three places to 9th in Deloitte's Money LeagueNet debt increased by £12.2m to £57.3mThe cold truth is that this is more important to them, than the results achieved on the pitch. Getting into CL would obviously be a financial boost, but understandably FSG seem to be here for the long term (Stadium renovation plans back the claim) and are quite patient with that.It is also interesting to note that while most other Premier League clubs set up their pre-season friendlies against decent competitive sides, we toured Australia and South East Asia (which has a huge Liverpool fan base) playing some light-weight clubs. It was in business interest. I'm not sure of the exact figures, but the club made a huge amount of money by selling out every game. Also, they don't understand the game like the fans do. Most of the fans would've figured out by now that Rodgers isn't the right man to lead a club as big as Liverpool. He's tactically naive, poor at player man-management, pathetic in the transfer market, doesn't work in unison with the Tranfser Committee and has his preference for his signings over the Committee's, is really stubborn etc. The owners are pretty much blind to these internal factors. As long as the stats and numbers are good at the end of the season, they will be fine with that. We fans think mainly on football terms, but it's not always the same with the owners.
