PDF Editor FAQ

What are the biggest culture shocks people face when coming to Germany?

1) People respecting your private life. No calls from office when you are at home. Coming from India, this is of course a cultural shock for me :)2) No limits for the sick leaves (provided you have the certificate from doctor) unlike India where you can opt for sick leaves just 6–15 days per year3) Blowing their noses out loudly in public4) Showers in gym does not have walls or at least separators like curtains.5) Lot of pommes(you get french fries everywhere, I mean everywhere)6) People not fighting for seats in buses or trains.7) Beer and beer everywhere8) Germans are very frank and we got to be ready to take a NO for an answer.9) Very little English.10) None or very few people on streets after 8pm.11) Very tough to get a doctor initially and the concept of hausarzt (Getting a house doctor). I had to call around 10 doctors to finally get a hausarzt. Never ever travel to Germany without insurance. None of the doctors would accept you without insurance, they don’t accept you even if you are ready to pay in cash.12) Germany is one of the hardest places to get a driving license(It’s been 3 months and still I am trying to get the driving license. Almost 1100 questions to study for the theory exam)13) Most water in Germany is carbonated, not flat. Carbonated water is served by default in restaurants if you do not mention “Stilles Wasser”.14) Absolute discipline even though during hours of huge traffic jams in the Autobahn. No honking, no overtaking and no road rage. Will add more in the future :)

I've been offered a job in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at a popular food restaurant for RM 900 per month, 10 hours duty time. I've been offered this job through an overseas employment agent in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. I want to know how my life in a foreign country would pan out. What are some thoughts and words of wisdom?

Please stay where you are. RM 900 takes you nowhere. Those agents in Rawalpindi probably is taking 80% of your income. They are just paying you minimum basic wage.KL is expensive and the F&B industry in KL is harsh. Long hours of work, only one day off, no sick leaves and sometimes you can’t get back to your country despite your annual vacation. This will depress you and you’ll probably resort to routes that may not benefit your career. Also, since you can speak English so well (your question is so eloquent without grammar or spelling mistakes), I would advise you to stay where you are and try to workout something over there. At least you will be close to your loved ones and there is no bigger wealth than being with loved ones.Take some classes on the side and learn about computers. The world will completely and dependently function on computers. Learn how to code, do some certifications such as CCNA, CCNP and CCIE. Maybe do AWS certification. Learn UI-UX maybe or graphic designing. Or learn photography/videography. Lots of big fat Pakistani weddings happen every year and you can mint money by photographing them. You can be on Quora, that means you have access to internet and your English is exemplary. You can do really well with your career if you are patient and consistently grow your skills that are in demand rather than going to KL and getting paid peanuts for literally nothing.Good luck!

If you are the boss and one of your employees calls in the morning and says that they "didn't feel good" when they woke up that morning so they're taking a sick day, would you accept that excuse as given or would you probe for a more detailed answer?

I had a supervisor who literally did this. If you called in sick, he would ask for a list of symptoms, and then make you feel guilty until you (hopefully) changed your mind.Hardly anyone took sick days under him, and we all just came in and infected one another and our students, who had no problems taking sick days. Then we got a new vice principal who was incredibly relaxed about such things, didn’t question it at all.A lot more people started taking their sick days under him - even if they weren’t actually sick. The first guy was definitely in the wrong. We are all adults, and if someone says they are too unwell to come to work, we should respect them enough to believe them. I’m actually glad, since covid, that people are taking their responsibility to stay home when sick so seriously. We have a year in 2020 where I didn’t have to take a single sick day, nor did my children. On the other hand, though, people taking a free for all on sick leave is not great either. Most places have a rule that you can have two days off without a medical certificate. If I were the boss, I would just tell my employee I hoped they got better soon, and if they did not, I’d ask for a doctor’s note.
