Not difficult at all.I was afraid of difficulties, though.I was not afraid of not having enough money. I like the Russian proverb that if the God sends you a hare, He will also send you a small meadow to feed him.I was not afraid of physical difficulties. I knew that I would learn how to take care of baby.I was not afraid of having a sick baby. Somehow I believed it would not be the case.I was not afraid of having to spend too much time with the baby. I knew that if I am choosing to have a child, I should take my responsibilities.However, I was very much afraid that it would be boring. Never in my life was I interested in babies. A child becomes interesting at the age of five, perhaps four, in any case not less than three, thought I. With such a child, one can have a meaningful conversation. Before that, you are just feeding this small thing, changing its diapers and listening to his cries. Nothing else.Boy, was I wrong!I cannot imagine anything in life that could be as interesting as raising a baby. Of course, an outsider cannot have a meaningful conversation with an 18-month baby but a parent can. If you spend some time with your child every day, you learn to understand this new human being. When my daughter was 18 months old, we could talk a lot. Of course, her words were very far from normative Russian (babik instead of spasibo, thank you or apga instead of karablik, the ship) but I understood them. Some of the words were even more specific: she sniffed to say “flower” and made a small whimper to say “baby” or “I”.And communicating with the person is not just speaking. How many books have we read together, how many games have we played. I even had to learn to draw a bit (thanks to the Internet that provided me with manuals how to draw a swing or a helicopter). I enjoyed seeing how she learns to sit, to stand, to crawl, to climb to the bed and to get down, to walk, to walk the stairs, to run. I enjoyed acquainting her with new facets of the world and making her taste new delicious things. Finally, I was happy just walking with her for hours in any weather, first with a big baby carriage, then with a smaller one, finally holding her hand in mine or making her ride my neck.In twenty minutes, it will be 11 July. She will be three years old tomorrow. The minimum age for a child to be interesting, according to what I thought before. I have impression to have lived multiple lives in the last three years.
