There are many facets of being a good software engineer. Different companies will value different skills. Below are the broad strokes of what I have found to be key attributes of high quality senior software engineers. I helped tweak the eng competency framework at Facebook and lead the effort to rewrite them at Uber. I’ve thought a lot about this and feel like the following represents the key areas all software engineers should look to evaluate themselves on.Software EngineeringYou should be able to deliver high quality code to solve hard problems in a timely manner. The technical output of your work should be well tested, documented and easy for other people in your organization to work with.Architecture and DesignYou should be able to design systems that are easy to maintain, scale with the needs of your organization. Your designs should account for edge cases and clearly document the tradeoffs of your design.LeadershipAt this level, you should demonstrate the best in breed of what your organization values and be an example of it to your more junior peers. While you may not be a manager, you should be able to mentor more junior team members and be a thought leader and stable figure as your team tackles hard problems. You demonstrate this through mature communication and conflict resolution.Communication and CollaborationYou are able to clearly and efficiently communicate within your team and across the organization. You help resolve miscommunications and clear up ambiguity. You keep the big picture in mind and forge partnerships across teams.CitizenshipYour impact across the org should be felt beyond just your team. You work on efforts that make the wider engineering organization more effective. Between code quality standards, widely used frameworks, high quality interviewing and company-wide task forces, you make other engineers and teams better because of your efforts.

The documentation model that you use to describe the design in your thesis is only a means to convey your message. In that case, using an established and accepted documentation model is a good idea, but will not, in itself, be the basis for the thesis.Alternatively I could imagine a thesis where you compare and evaluate different architecture document methods, but then this would only be one of many approaches.
