Some are in areas which mostly serve children and teens and for them it’s not worth the bother. In some areas, serving alcohol might invite trouble too.They certainly exist though.

Narcissism: What is the false-self?The “False Self” is a constructed two-dimensional version of the Narcissistic person that originated in childhood and was carefully edited so as to maximize the amount of support the child could get from the parents. It can be viewed as a costume that the person donned in an attempt to adjust to his or her childhood situation. Under the costume is their unexplored “Real Self.”What is the Real Self?Narcissistic individuals’ “Real Self” is who they really are under the costume. It consists of an authentic mix of real interests and talents and also inborn limitations. “The Real Self” develops over time as children, teens, and adults explore their environment and learn what they enjoy doing and how they want to live their lives.Artificial Flowers vs. a Real PlantThe False Self is artificial and static: One way to understand the distinction betwen the “Real Self” and the “False Self” is to compare the “False Self” to a bouquet of artificial flowers. From a distance they may appear real, but as you get closer you begin to notice signs that it is fake—the buds never open, the flowers never grow, and they do not change in response to their environment. Then, if you scratch the surface of a leaf or a stem, you discover that it does not have the inner structure of a living entity.The Real Self is authentic and always evolving: Each of us has authentic preferences: we like certain smells, colors, activities and dislike other ones. Over time, if we are relatively free to explore our environment and experiment, we are likely to find new things to like or dislike and in the process we change, outgrowing some things and finding new interests.At some point we realize that we have quite a bit of autonomy and can use what we learn about ourselves to attempt to direct our life in a satisfying direction. This is an ongoing, natural process that never stops as long as we are alive.The Problem: Once a “False Self” is constructed, the person stops evolving and keeps using the “False Self” facade until it feels completely natural. By adulthood the “False Self’s” original adaptive purpose is forgotten and Narcissists experience this artificial and very limiting construction as simply who they are.Punchline: A Narcissistic “False Self” is a costume that was adopted in an attempt to please the Narcissist’s parents and maximize patental support.
