Excuse us if this answer is already written.Reliance Jio launched in India in 2016 just before the famous Demonetization (5 September 2016 to be precise)It gave never to be heard prices for Data ($ 0.26 for 1GB of Data) whereas in the US the same thing costs a whopping $ 12.37 or 47 times more! Before its launch data was damn expensive in India and cost at least 20 times more.Oh and we forgot to mention one more thing, Calling was free all over India. You could call anyone to any mobile network or landline in India and it was free!So, you’d be wondering; how can this company make a profit?In India you need to pay interconnect charges to the other network when you place a call to a number in that network. Suppose you call a Number on the ‘Airtel’ network from your ‘Jio’ network, JIO has to pay interconnect charges or IUC to Airtel.Since, calling for free for JIO customers, they started calling left, right and center to various networks. This resulted in a huge IUC bill to JIO.So what did JIO do? It shortened the ringing time for outgoing calls to other networks to 20 seconds instead of 45 seconds.What difference did this make? When a customer would call another network, the call would ring for 20 seconds or 4–5 rings only. Since, 4–5 rings is a short duration to pick any call, the call would now become a missed call and that Airtel customer would now call the JIO customer.Thus, JIO has reversed the situation and now Airtel had to pay IUC charges to JIO instead it being the other way round! JIO just made the best out of the worst situation by taking advantage of a loophole in the law.To put things into perspective, in one quarter ending June 2019, it saved around $33 million ( or Rs 254 crore) in IUC Charges. This continued for 2.5 years until other networks realized what was going on.This is one of the the shrewdest, smartest maneuver we have seen in business.Sure, Mr. Ambani was laughing his way to the Bank somewhat like this :)Hope we have added our 2 cents to this question!

During that 10 year period it was estimated that Amazon would still pay $27 billion in taxes.What this glimmering jewel of colossal ignorance and supposed economics graduate couldn’t grasp is the concept of a tax break. She actually believed NY state was going to pay Amazon $3 billion, and now that it’s not going to Amazon, the state can use the money for other purposes. What has actually happened is NY State lost $27 billion in tax revenue from Amazon, plus the millions of lost state income taxes, local property taxes, and state and local sales taxes of 25,000 employees. 25,000 Amazon employees need food, medical, auto, recreational, etc services, so a substantial number of support jobs and their tax revenue is lost. Lastly, let’s not forget the thousands of construction and building industry jobs and materials sales over the many years to come to build and maintain the campus.Socialists need tax revenue in order to implement their government programs. The Governor, Andrew Cuomo, a pretty hard leftist himself, is not happy about losing billions of tax revenue. AOC and her socialist brethren have just cost NY State billions.Victory??Edit to my original Answer:Is has come to my attention, confirmed by further research that AOC’s comment I cited may not have been as wrong as I alluded to. NY State did agree to pay Amazon from several business development funds, though exactly how much and under what conditions varies depending on who’s story you are listening to. AOC is apparently furthering the notion of doing away with future new business development in NY State. Nonetheless the original premise stands – that the millions to billions of tax dollars this would have brought to NY State would have far offset the dollars and tax breaks NY was using to entice Amazon to set up shop in their state.It also turns out the AOC was not the main player in the deal to kill the Amazon HQ – it was a state senator. AOC is along just for the ride.
