PDF Editor FAQ

Is the Bose Lifestyle V35 home entertainment system the best home entertainment system?

I would really try to avoid Bose products.I will only talk about the loudspeakers and bass module. The cube surround loudspeakers use a 2.5 inch paper driver. Paper cones at 2.5 inches are too large to reproduce any decent high frequencies, you would be lucky to get anything above 12-13kHz. Typical tweeters to reproduce high frequencies are between 1 and 1 1/2 inches in size. At the other end of the scale, the size of the diaphragm is not large enough to reproduce a decent low-mid-range, and is physically impossible to reproduce any bass. A mid-range driver ideally should be 4-6 inches in size. Bose's 2.5inch driver roll off sharply at around 300Hz. The cabinets of the loudspeakers are made of very flimsy, thin plastic that rattles and resonates. Stick your head inside a plastic box, sure does sound funny! Cabinets should be made with dense materials to dampen any resonaces. The bass module uses three 5.5 inch drivers. These are too small to reproduce any decent bass, they are closer to mid-range drivers in size. If I recall correctly, they use three drivers in a 7th ordered band pass configuration. This is one of the worst types of designs you can use, and I'm guessing the only purpose it has here is because the 5.5 inch drivers are inefficient so this configuration is used to increase the sound pressure level, but it has huge effects one the frequency response, with resonances and steep rolloff. Again, the module is made from flimsy materials. If it helps, I have seen unbranded versions (from the same factory) of the satellite loudspeakers for sale for £10 ($15) each, I worked in hi-fi retail for many years. Not really good on a £4,500 system Bose has.
