To attend a public high school in the United States, you generally just need to have a primary residential (home) address in a particular school's district. Having prepared for and scored 8 over 10 in the IELTS myself a few years back, i am in a good position to provide a good perspective on the IELTS.For immigration, work or further education purposes, foreign developed countries (like UK, Canada, US etc.) rely on IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language, required as a pre-requisite for admission to universities in the USA) scores to gauge a prospects knowledge of English (written, spoken and understanding of spoken English).English speaking developed countries want to ensure that people coming into their country (either for settling or for education) have a basic level of English. If they do not know English, they will find it difficult to integrate. If you are unable to pass IELTS of TOEFL with the minimum scores required, you will be deemed ineligible and will have to sit for the exam again.As far as i am aware, your IELTS score is valid for 2 years from the date you gave the exam.If you are educated in English medium in India and have a fairly good command over English, passing IELTS or TOEFL should not be difficult at all.To be honest, i self-studied for 2 days before giving my IELTS.Best way to prepare is to give sample papers, mock tests which are available in plenty on the internet. One of the modules is that something is spoken over the speaker once and you are required to answer questions related to what has been spoken. At my school, I work with Admissions to help select international students. We look at the whole package: questionnaire, writing sample, teacher recommendations, transcript, etc.The interview (either in person or via Skype or WeChat) is VERY important. It allows us to hear your spoken English and get a sense of your comprehension of our English. The interview is also a great way to get to know you—are you shy or outgoing? What are your passions? Why do you want to come to the US to study? What is your dream for the future?During the interview, we give you a written question that you must answer on the spot. We can see your level of written English. We don’t expect perfection, but we can learn a lot about your level.Your TOEFL score is important, too. The bottom line is that you are applying to come study in an American school. Conversational English is great, but we need to know if you’ll be able to understand an American history or math or art teacher—that is, academic English. We also have to know if you can do the readings in our literature and history and science classes. Again, we recognize that English is your second language and we don’t expect you to be at the level of your American peers. However, you have to be able to follow our classes, as we don’t offer any special, modified classes at all.Finally, the decision to accept a student is a group decision.
