I am an authority on the subject!!SO: (surprised)I had no idea. Where did you take your advanced mathematics and physics courses?Narc: (speaking under his breath)I went to Parnell Community College —it’s an Ivy League institution.SO: (perplexed)There are no community colleges in the Ivy League..Narc: (irritated)You are such an idiot! Absolutely everyone agrees that Parnell Community College is the Harvard of East Texas!! You are so ill-informed!! By the way, where did you go college??SO: (Bewildered by narc’s amped up tone)I went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology....and from there I went to Stan...……Narc: (loudly interrupting)I don’t need to hear your whole resume. You don’t have to brag! Did you know I received a prestigious science award at Parnell?SO: (sincere curiosity)Did it have to do with your Quantum Physics studies?Narc: (irritated)I never took any math or physics classes because those subjects bore me. Instructor Hillman, who taught Fuel Injection Theory, gave me the award for best attendance. Fuel Injection Theory is an advanced auto repair course at Devry Auto Tech where I am doing my post grad work. By the way my best attendance award is pretty impressive because we had so much bad weather during the winter term. I easily could have missed class due to hazardous road conditions.SO: (befuddled)Wait, you just criticized my Quantum Physics paper, and you have not taken any advanced physics or mathematics classes?Narc: (becoming irate)Of course I did. You are truly very unsophisticated for someone who works at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory!! For your information, I took Algerbra and Biology back in sixth grade!!!SO: (speaking calmly and respectfully)Based on what you have told me, I get the impression you are not qualified to make an assessment of the merits of my paper on the Heisenberg Paradox. I think it is rather presumptuous of you to criticize..........Narc: (interrupting with rage explosion)Speaking of judgement.....who do you think you are to judge me!!! I resent your lashing out at me with your negative feedback regarding my presumptiveness!! All I ever do is build up your confidence, yet you can’t give me a compliment on my having won a highly coveted award!! You are too sensitive about your pathetic paper on the Hillberger Paragon!! I'll go with Ramona PiersonAs described in this Businessweek profile:22-year-old math prodigy doing algorithm work as a Marine gets hit by a car. The accident breaks 104 of her bones, causes multiple forms of brain trauma, and punctures holes in her lungs. After being comatose for 18 months, she wakes upweighing 64 pounds, she was bald, with a cubist face, metal bones, and a body covered in scars. And she was blind. The one part of her that wasn’t ruined was her mathematical mind.She has no family that can help, and cannot care for herself, so after 18 months of bouncing from hospital to hospital, she is sent to a senior citizen's home whereThe seniors took Pierson on as a pet project. They taught her how to speak, cook, and get dressed—with results that veered between hilarious and near disastrous. For lunch one day, the men decided to educate the still-blind Pierson in the art of barbecuing. They left her alone for a few minutes only to return and find that she’d sprayed lighter fluid around the yard and singed the grass. The women, meanwhile, put Pierson in floral gowns and gave her perms and other hairstyles befitting an 80-year-old. “It was bittersweet,” she says. “They were declining every day, and I was getting better because of them.”Because the doctors hadn't expected her to live, they'd done no cosmetic work on her when she was in a coma. It will take more than 100 surgeries to put her back together. When she finally leaves the nursing home, she chews up the world with every experience imaginablePhotos show her exploits as a blind rock climber and cross-country skier. At the end of one walkway are several framed newspaper clippings covering the year she spent tandem-bike racing through Russia to qualify for the Paralympics. While popping handfuls of pills a day to deal with the pain, she set some records, then joined a regular, i.e., not disabled, USA Cycling masters team, grabbed a silver at the National Championships, and was named cyclist of the year in 1995. “I never thought I’d be living that long, so I figured, ‘I am going to wear this s-‍-‍- out,’ ” she says.She also goes back to school -- first to community college, then undergrad, then a master’s degree in education from the University of San Francisco and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Stanford.For the next decade she gets every bit of experimental surgery available to try to continue rebuilding herself. After 11 years of blindness, she gets sight back in her left eye. She returns to the militaryDetermined to help people suffering from her own level of trauma, Pierson worked for the military during the first Gulf War. The U.S. Army discovered that desert sand was destroying not only planes but also MRI machines. Soldiers would get shot in the head, and the doctors trying to operate on them would have to work off grainy images caused by malfunctioning equipment. Pierson solved the problem by developing a series of algorithms that sharpened the images. In 1997 she went to work at a brain research center in Palo Alto, again to aid soldiers coming back from the Middle East.Her story continues in this vein. She becomes the founder of an education startup which she sells three years later and is now the founder of Declara, which according to its webpage is:an intelligent social learning platform. We connect large numbers of people to massive amounts of content. Declara offers what no other data analysis or social sharing platform can - it observes how people learn and adjusts accordingly.She recently turned 50:When Pierson turned 50 last December, she and Chrapaty threw a three-day-long celebration in Carmel Valley. The couple had been through a lot, including a series of bungled leg surgeries that left Pierson near death once again. “The doctors gave me an infected bone implant,” Pierson says, adding that she’s never sued. “They had to cut that out of me and start again. Debra and I almost broke up. She didn’t really sign up for all this.” By the time her birthday rolled around, Pierson was as healthy as she’d been in years, and it was time to party.On the last day of the event, everyone gathered in a banquet room at the Carmel Valley Lodge, down the hill from the house. Pierson has picked up friends all over the world, and here they were spending hours chatting and reminiscing together. One of the more memorable moments came as Pierson gave a bear hug to Naomi Hoops, an octogenarian former school custodian who got to know Pierson at the community college in Colorado. “I thought she was going to squeeze the life out of me,” Hoops says. “She is that same old Ramona I first met.”Another attendee that evening was Stan Chervin, a screenwriter working on a movie about Pierson. “People who dismiss It’s a Wonderful Life as being too hokey should have been in that room,” he says. “Person after person stood up and said, ‘This is how Ramona Pierson changed my life.’ The cliché is the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. Well, it ain’t a cliché with Ramona.”

That depends on the specific associate’s degree, the state, the community college and the university. For example, in NC the Stanly Community College has an associate’s degree in Electronics Technology. This specific degree is accepted at UNC Charlotte as the first half of specific electrical engineering degrees. This is an agreement between these two colleges.Further, in NC, an associate’s degree in either the arts or sciences is accepted at all public universities, by law, for covering the general education requirements which all four year degrees have (and mostly shouldn’t). The transferable courses are also required, by law, to be exactly equivalent so individual courses can also be transferred even if not obtaining an associate’s degree. At UNC Charlotte up to 65 semester hours can be transferred in (this may vary with the department, and multiple majors may have different collections that get transferred in). This is a much cheaper way of getting “overhead” and the basic courses in a subject out of the way when compared to taking exactly the same courses in a four year institution. Considering that community college costs around 1/3 of what a public college costs, this can be a very cost effective way to obtain your four year degree.I personally am graduating in May with an AA, AS and AAS (all possible associate degrees) having maxed out every possible, and useful, course provided in the community college system up to an including Calculus III and Differential Equations - with the sole exception of Physics which I have been unable to find online and is not available locally. Chemistry is available, and Physics is available at other community colleges.I will have obtained all of those in two years with a tuition of $1152 for each of the first two semesters and $1248 for each of the second two (again, by law, tuition maxes at 16 semester hours even when taking courses at multiple community colleges at the same time - this semester I am taking courses at three different community colleges). I am taking 30+ semester hours, with nearly half of them essentially free - barring textbooks - with a total of 132 semester hours after two years. I am attending UNCC next fall as a mathematics major, but can add or change to pretty much any other major even remotely of interest to me at UNCC because of that strategy, and have a head start on any of a mathematics major, a computer science major or an engineering major because of of the additional courses that transfer above and beyond the associate’s degree.So yes, this is a good idea and is highly recommended even when don’t want to push the envelope the way that I am doing. My daughter is also attending community college. Her associate’s degree does not transfer - but it is what made her interested in attending college, so it was well worth it. She has learned a lot about what she wants to do as a career. She will be continuing for another year to get an associate’s degree of science and then transfer to UNCC to continue in a similar program in a four year setting. My wife is also getting her associate’s degree.
